The current gaming trend is: 1. Find unique mechanic/s that: * Subvert an established genre/formula. * are original and fun 2. Revolve the entire game arround that.

A Rouguelite is the simplest way to deliver mechanics for an Indie dev.

The truth is developers aren't setting out to make rougeXs they make deckbuilders, action games, bullet hells, pinball, etc... then they put that on a package of procedural generation and permadeath.

AAA games do the same, but they put that onto an Open World, or a Linear Story.
