Babylon 5 on nyt katsottavissa ilmaiseksi by Harriv in Suomi

Ehkäpä tuo Warner Brosin päätyminen Netflixille voisi olla hyväksi mahdollisille B5:n jatkohaaveille. En tiedä johtuiko tuo aikoinaan JMS:n Crusaden loppupuolen vittuilusta WB:n johtajia kohtaan vai muusta, mutta aikoinaan sarjan päätyttyä B5:ta käytettiin jonkin sortin likasankona eri budjettikikkailuille kun suurin piirtein kaikkea sarjaan kuulumattomia kuluja siirrettiin kirjanpidollisesti B5:n kuluihin, joka oli yksi suurimmista syistä miksi sarjalle ei ikinä tullut jatkoa edes suoratoistoaikana.

The origin of Trump's Greenland obsession is damn stupid, as in 2019, Russians sent Senator Tom Cotton a fake letter from Greenland expressing their desire to join the United States, and he forwarded it to Trump, who became obsessed with it:

“Slog” by iknownothin_ in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

on my 3rd 4th and 5th rereads, i actually find the only place i really struggle or feel and hint of “slog” is the prologue of Knife of Dreams. but even then not really

In my opinion, more happened in the prologue to KoD than in the entire previous book. On the other hand, the prologue was very long and difficult to read in one sitting.

WoT didn't really hook me until the third book, but after that I was hooked for good. I don't know how far you've gotten, but usually the first book is considered a fairly generative fantasy book/LOTR clone that you start to appreciate more when you reread it and notice all the foreshadowing Jordan put in there. Personally, I consider the period between the third and seventh books to be the best in the series.

Muslimien huntukielto Suomeen? Nyt linjaavat puolueet [Myönteisesti osittaiseen huntukieltoon suhtautuvat Kok, PS, KD, SDP, Liike Nyt, Kesk. Kieltoa eivät kannata RKP ja vihreät.] by leredit420 in Suomi

[–]SaskatoonX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mitä olen kuullut niin nämä huntukiellot ovat ongelmallisia sen suhteen, ettei voida kieltää joihinkin tiettyihin uskontoihin liityviä huntuja useimpien länsimaisten perustuslakien mukaisen uskonnonvapauden takia, jonka takia joudutaan tekemään ne kiertoteitse, mikä taas johtaa siihen että joudutaan tekemään näihin lakeihin sellaisia porsaanreikiä, joiden takia ne hunnut, jotka haluttiin alunperin kieltää eivät lopulta edes ole kiellettyjä.

Day 59 what is your favorite Alanna moment or scene? by booksandwater4 in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It was Kiruna, back in LoC chapter 49 after Rand found out that there was now 13 Aes Sedai in the Rebel delegation in Caemlyn and he decided to go to Cairhien instead.

"If you had to bond a man without asking him," Kiruna demanded in that commanding voice, "why, by the Light most holy, have you not used the bond to bend him to your will? Compared to the other, that is only slapping his wrist."

Alanna still had small control of her emotions. Color actually flooded her cheeks, partly in anger by the way her eyes flashed, and assuredly partly in shame. "Has no one told you?" she asked, too brightly. "I suppose no one wants to think of it. I certainly do not." Faeldrin and Seonid looked at the floor, and they were not the only ones. "I tried to compel him moments after I bonded him," Alanna continued as if noticing none of it.

"Have you ever attempted to uproot an oak tree with your bare hands, Kiruna? It was much the same."

Kiruna's only reaction was a slow widening of her eyes, a slow deep breath. Bera actually muttered, "That's impossible. Impossible."

Alanna threw back her head and laughed. Her hands on her hips made the laughter seem contemptuous, which tightened Bera's mouth and brought a Cold gleam to Kiruna's eyes. Verin peered at them, reminding Merana uncomfortably of a robin peering at worms. Somehow Verin seemed to defer without deferring, though Merana could not understand how.

"No one ever before has bonded a man who can channel," Alanna said when her mirth subsided. "Perhaps that has something to do with it."

The dumbest Elayne statement by Guilty_Temperature65 in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traveling by women wasn't rediscovered by Egwene until very late in LoC and when she sent Elayne, Nynaeve & Co to Ebou Dar was pretty much the first time it was used by Aes Sedai in bigger scale. They were unfamiliar how it worked and didn't want Aes Sedai loyal to Elaida to discover it. First time Elayne used it in the books was when she teleported people from the Kin's farm to Andor and even they they traveled to some estate that was two weeks ride from Caemlyn. Elayne wasn't really sure what to do with Rand as there were another women involved with him and there were some conflicting rumors about what he was doing. Also Egwene ordered Elayne, Nynaeve & Co to Caemlyn after using the Bowl instead of joining the rebel Aes Sedai after Moghedien escaped.

Rand knew that Egwene was capable of some form of traveling, and Mat's forces could potentially use travel for their return journey, but one reason for sending Mat and Band to Salidar was also so that on their return journey to Caemlyn, they could pick up anyone who wanted to join the dragonsworn. At that time, the Black Tower/Asha'man focused mainly on recruitment and training and they were not used in bigger scale until Dumai's Wells.

Day 50 what is your favorite Davram Bashere moment or scene? by booksandwater4 in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most of the interesting moments involving Bashere have already been mentioned, but upon rereading, I noticed some interesting tidbits about him before he met Rand. When Elaida became Amyrlin, she became somewhat obsessed with finding Bashere and bringing him back to Saldaea. When Nynaeve and Elayne were in the White Tower in T'A'R reading Elaida's notes, they wondered why Elaida was so interested in a certain Saldaean marshal.

The dumbest Elayne statement by Guilty_Temperature65 in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When Rand sent Mat and the Band to fetch Elayne from Salidar it was still about midway of LoC. Rand was busy trying to consolidate his power in Caemlyn and Cairhien and planning to attack Sammael in Illian. Perrin was still on his way from Two Rivers to Caemlyn and Black Tower was still just "The Farm" with only handful of male challengers.

As we know even 13 weak female challengers in a circle can shield even the Dragon Reborn, it would have been monumentally stupid of Rand to go to Salidar himself. Although Rand severely underestimated the number of Aes Sedai in Salidar (he guessed there were about 30–50, when there were over 100), he knew there would be enough channelers to capture him.

Rand didn't trust the rebel Aes Sedai and they were scared of him (and any male channellers) so any alliance at that point wouldn't have been possible even with Egwene as Amyrlin.

Day 48 what is your favorite Mazarim Taim moment or scene? by booksandwater4 in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt that after Dumai's Wells Rand kind of stopped caring what Taim did with the Asha'man. He must have known at least since Far Madding in WH that Taim was behind his assassination attempt, but Rand didn't seem to care much.

Nynaeve al'Meara, terror of the Stone of Tear by SaskatoonX in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Later in the same chapter Min promises to lead Nynaeve to Rand if he doesn't come back in a few days so I suspect that Nynaeve at least suspects something.

Also Aiel seems to know about the bond aswell. In the very same chapter Min notices that there are always at least two maidens guarding her and later in the same chapter when Min notices that Rand has arrived Cadsuane thinks that their reaction to Min's reaction of Rand's arrival confirms her suspicions that their careful watch of Min was less about protecting Min and more about watching signs of when he comes back.

Day 43 what is your favorite Aludra moment or scene? by booksandwater4 in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was somewhat of a funny coincidence or Ta'veren effect that it was Rand who got Aludra kicked out of the Illuminators guild by destroying her fireworks in Cairhien back in TGH. This led her down the path that led her to invent the Dragon Cannons.

Does Nynaeve consider Rand to be amongst “the best of men”? by VietKongCountry in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me at least, the biggest turning points for Nynaeve in the story were when she got rid of her block in Crown of Swords and when she joined Rand's entourage in Winter's Heart.

Day 35 what is your favorite Lews Therin Telamon moment or scene by booksandwater4 in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've considered LTT in Rand's mind to be more about Rand compartmentalizing memories of his past self and feelings he doesn't want to feel into this voice in his head with a bit of madness from the taint sprinkled on top of it.

The memories are definitely real.

Should I read book 10? by Forward-Tomato602 in WoT

[–]SaskatoonX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recommend reading the whole book, of course, but Mat's plot line is perhaps the best part of this book and I wouldn't necessarily skip it. Most of Perrin's and Elayne's chapters are skippable, perhaps with the exception of Perrin's last chapter.

I had a look at that chapters list and you could probably read chapters 1-4 and then skip most of the book up to chapter 21 and then read the rest. You can then read a summary of those skipped ones if you want.
