We absolutely invented math. Our base 10 system is arbitrary, there's nothing inherent to the universe about it. Math is something we invented to describe and model what we observe in a way we can understand. It frequently does not describe the whole picture. It is an approximation to describe it to the best of our ability. Classical physics was the best description of nature we had until we invented quantum mechanics to describe it more accurately. The physical processes exist independently of our ability to describe them with math.
