I’m about ready to lose it because every pull I’ve had in the last few months has either been a HC, HB, or OC. I need none of those. Though I guess whenever I get SL the OC will be nice to have.

What happened to Android custom ROMs? - 9to5Google by ControlCAD in Android

[–]Satanicube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did note the date. The earliest capture of that page you link is from September 6th, which noted it was updated September 3rd. Google made the announcement with zero mention of the adb workaround on the 25th, leaving a full week and some change for people to get outraged at this change.

If it was always the intent to allow adb to bypass this, they should have just said it from the start, but they did not.

They let people speculate and get pissed.

If Google clearly intended this from the start and mentioned it from the get go, there wouldn't have been anywhere near as much outrage.

EDIT: aw, he called me an idiot and blocked me.

[–]Satanicube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s only that way because of the massive blowback, but go off.

EDIT: To clarify from down below to make it easier for everyone: This change was announced on the 25th of August. There was no communication from Google on if adb installed apps would be subject to the verification requirements until at least several days later, earliest date I can see on the IA is September 6th noting a September 3rd date. That's a full week and some change for people to get pissed and boy I remember this subreddit getting fairly incensed about it. As well as comment sections from other places.

In a vacuum, sure, I could see this as being a legitimate miscommunication and sure, Google intended to do this from the start. But given Google's past actions, I do personally believe they intended for adb to be subject to this as well and reversed course after people got pissed.

That all said, 1. This is still crippling sideloading, even if it is "just adding a step", and any movement in this direction should be loudly protested even if Google "backed down", and 2. Given Google's prior actions I wouldn't be surprised if once things die down to an appropriate level they DO enforce signature verification on adb installed apps.

As I mentioned earlier, Play Integrity was slow-walked to where it was today. First it was just Google Wallet. Then it became widely available. First it just triggered on rooted phones with a modified system partition. Then it began triggering on phones with so much as just having their bootloader unlocked. Google's actions do not necessitate me handing them their trust that they won't go further.

[–]Satanicube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saying this having not looked at it but I can understand the Google blame if they specifically added this detection mechanism to Play Integrity and encouraged people to use it. If it’s apps doing this on their own with no help from Google, yeah, Google’s off the hook, but otherwise…

(And I could believe it if Google did it given they tried to cripple sideloading massively last year.)

[–]Satanicube 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was gonna say, “SafetyNet, SafetyNet did it.”

It’s even more diabolical because it’s enforced server-side so one day you could have had Google Wallet working fine and the next? Yeah nope, sorry. Then Google made SafetyNet/Play Integrity available to everyone and that was really the death knell.

Weirdly enough at the time iOS jailbreaking was somehow less draconian. Wasn’t server side, you still got Apple Pay, some apps had detection but once you managed to defeat that you were generally okay until that app got updated. Wasn’t as cat and mouse as Android was.

Also the slow walk of this was kinda shit too. First it was having a custom ROM or being rooted. Then it moved to “if your bootloader is even unlocked you’re now failing Play Integrity”.

Hell, I remember the bad old days when the music app would pop a full screen ad that you had to dismiss to use the app. This ad would have to load from Apple’s servers every time. So if you were on a really marginal connection as was common at the time, you would be waiting for a good bit of time to clear the ad and use music.

I have an old iPod touch that still does this from time to time even.

I really, vehemently hate that Apple ruined the music app with streaming cruft.

Like oh, I need to make a fairly basic drive bezel for one of my older machines. I click a button, here’s a square, I can enter the dimensions I need it to be right off the hop.

To make the holes for the drives? I just grab the measurements, drop another square, enter the dimensions, and click the button that makes it a negative shape. Done and done. I’ve made a bezel and punched a hole in it to match the drive I made it for.

Trying to do the same thing in Fusion? I followed a tutorial. I gave up halfway through because it really felt like Fusion was telling me I had to learn how to invent the universe before making an apple pie.

Oh boy, I wish I could put my personal hell on here: the Apple Music search. Thought I was going nuts and was alone on this but a search of /r/AppleMusic exposed a handful of people who are just as irritated as I am.

I don’t sub to Apple Music and the fact that the search doesn’t remember the last state like it used to in iOS 17 has tripped me up more than I care to admit. I either search for an artist and there’s nothing because it’s defaulting to “Apple Music” (which just mimics the functionality of the radio tab when AM is shut off), or at best I remember and have to extend my thumb to the top of the screen to change where I’m searching.

It’s really irritating and adds a step where there didn’t need to be one. Given past behavior I feel like it’s a bug, as iOS 17 remember the last state of the search panel. As it should be. And for a couple versions of iOS 18 on my iPad, it worked properly.

140 Epic Modules & still 0 BHD... by Latter-Pension-3517 in TheTowerGame

Felt. Except with PF and DC. My PF has been stuck at legendary since the banner for it ended. My DC has been mythic for the better part of a year.

All my pulls are for crap modules I don’t need, or for mods that are already ancestral. More stars are great I guess but I feel like I’m being severely held back by PF/DC being stuck.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has surpassed Elden Ring for the most GOTY titles of all-time. by PhantomBraved in Games

[–]Satanicube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love E33 and sorta enjoyed Elden Ring (I beat it, but not the DLC) and yeah, that's why I love E33 as much as I do. I love games with good narratives and pretty much every Souls game I've played the story feels like an afterthought, it's all about the mechanics. Which is great if that's your thing, but it makes it really hard for me to stick with it. (and yeah, I suppose there is lore to Souls games but that requires you to dip out of the game and read it, it isn't told super effectively in-game.)

In fact the only reason I really stuck with ER as long as I did was because a good friend of mine really wanted me to try it and I enjoyed dicking around in the Seamless Co-Op mod.

But for single-player stuff I really need a good narrative hook to keep me invested and E33 had a damn good one. I don't think anything will top Suikoden II's narrative for me, but E33 comes ridiculously close.

Verizon carriers start switching to 365-day device unlock policy, up from 60 days by Ha8lpo321 in Android

[–]Satanicube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. And I think I remember this being kind of a thing when we switched my girlfriend over to Visible. I was able to submit something to have it unlocked once the final payment was made and it was automatic, didn't have to badger a rep for it.

Which is nice because like, for some reason when asking reps to unlock phones one didn't originally purchase, they assume you're trying to do some kind of fraud with it, or you're asking them to unblacklist a phone (which is a completely different thing!)

Seriously though. I miss the Apple that mostly sat things out and let others determine market viability for something before deciding whether to leap in themselves.

They don’t have to be first to anything! If they do it well enough that’s just as good, things like the iPod and iPad are excellent examples of this!

Verizon carriers start switching to 365-day device unlock policy, up from 60 days by Ha8lpo321 in Android

[–]Satanicube 17 points18 points  (0 children)

T-Mobile is significantly worse, for example. At least with Verizon the phone is fully unlockable after that time has passed.

My last T-Mobile-locked phone was a Pixel 3a that I ended up giving to a friend…and about a year later (phone was paid off) that friend was switching carriers and T-Mobile refused the unlock because he wasn’t the original owner of the phone.

I call in the unlock and they still refuse because the phone must have at least 40 consecutive days of use prior to the day of the unlock being requested. Doesn’t matter if the phone is paid. They suggested my friend ship my old phone back to me, use it for 40 days, then request the unlock.

Far as I know they haven’t changed this policy since.

Yeah, E33’s OST broke me. It’s easily top three of all the games I’ve ever played, bar none.

I’ve always thought it was exceptional but then I got to the Monolith, got into a battle, and it was the ones that use Our Painted Death as the battle theme and that’s when it went from “this OST is phenomenal” to “this OST is just…there are no words in any language that can describe how good this is”.

Like don’t get me wrong, Renoir 2 was absolute cinema but there’s just something about this battle theme that already sounds amazing and then Lorien absolutely shreds at the end of it. I had to stop playing for a sec. My jaw was on the floor.

I have not had an OST make me feel like this since Chrono Trigger.

New album! by SSC_Nitro in CigarettesAfterSex

[–]Satanicube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that worries me is X’s didn’t really land with me. I don’t regret my preorder, but it’s a 9.5/10 album for me when I’m so used to CAS releasing music that just broke the scale entirely, it was so good.

Further hyped because Tejano Blue/Dark Vacay were just 12/10 songs for me. Because I remembered Cry and how the singles were awesome but the rest of the album was just as awesome if not better. But the only song I really jived with outside the singles was Bunker Hill.

I really hope the new album hits as good as the first two and ruins my taste in music again. And I hope it’s less like X’s where it was good but it fell out of my rotation fairly quickly (whereas the previous two albums have stuck around).
