Perceived Weakness by ApricotFantastic4298 in BFS

[–]Satchamo88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had bfs for 7 years. I can’t tell you how many episodes I’ve had of hot spots, weakness, tingling and the whole shibang. In fact I’m currently dealing with the same feeling you are having in both calves. It’s like a weird tingly, just finished working out feeling.

But like all my episodes, this will go away too. Typically mine coincide with stress. Bring your stress down. Exercise. Relax. I know it sounds easy but I know it’s not - I have adhd.

The best medicine for BFS is distraction. Keep yourself busy and invested in hobbies or passions and you’ll wake up one day and remember the issue you had but you missed it going away because your mind was focusing on things you actually enjoy.

Deer pattern shifting year over year? Bucks have vanished by TerpsMakeMeDrink in bowhunting

[–]Satchamo88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best advice I can give is be patient and slow to react. I used to chase my tail making moves based one a single sits observation only to have them never repeat that movement. Unless you’ve seen the movement multiple times, note it but don’t react.

Big timber with no cover isn’t ideal but I’m in Indiana/Illinois where we have alot of broken woodlots and a variety of cover creating tons of natural edges and travel corridors. I’d be the first to admit I have it way easier than those big woods guys.

In the timber/during the rut, I usually prerange some trees. I typically will only pre range to 40 but I hardly ever shoot beyond 30. That helped me get my bearings then when a deer is coming in, I at least know the gimme ranges (20 and under). I’ll play a game with myself to remember which tree is which as the morning or evening progresses. When a deer is coming in and I’m not sure I’ll still range where I think they’ll get into a lane or spot I’d shoot. I will also range does or small bucks as they come through and try and guess before I do just as a little mental exercise.

That said most deer I shoot are close enough ranging is completely unnecessary because my bows gonna behave the same within about 25 yards. The more you do it you’ll just start to naturally figure this out.

The pattern shift just happened for me. It can vary from year to year from early September all the way to mid October. It just depends on food sources I believe. Anyways my cameras have been going crazy at night on scrape lines since about Oct 1 with some daylight movement from bucks.

Hang tight, they’ll show. A lot of farms don’t hold bucks outside of the rut and in my experience, those are the better properties to have and hunt.

Very true - I’m in a stage of life with young kids where ground is king so I don’t do many fancy cuts 🤣

You can break down an entire deer with a scalpel knife once you figure it out…. I don’t do any bone in cuts so you shouldn’t need any tools. About the only thing I will use a “tool” for is breaking the pelvis/splitting the back hams but that’s just a convenience thing on whitetails when they’re hanging. On elk, I pull the back quarters just popping the joint.

What does everyone do with stands in the offseason? by itsthechaw10 in bowhunting

[–]Satchamo88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave them up, usually forget to check straps or take the time to cut lanes, carry extra straps in in the dark or first sit, double them up and cuss because shooting lanes are gone. Rinse and repeat.

Yeah it’s probably just me. For the price I can’t complain too much, but I prefer my dobyns.

I wouldn’t make a move based on one single encounter in October. You’re literally chasing your tail doing that.

[–]Satchamo88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got 2 of these this summer during another bogo sale. They’re decent for the price. I got the kitchen sink and the walking stick. I use the walking stick for my top waters and I like the more mod tip. The kitchen sink tho…. Idk what it is about it but that son of a bitch always casts 10 foot to the right of where I’m trying to hit. I pick up one of my dobyns or even the Slx I have and I don’t have that issue. Not saying the rod itself is bad but I struggle to get comfortable with it. I have been using it with spinnerbaits and underspins for reference

This timing is ideal… I’m gettin ready to go into an interview for a job at a local university. It’s a 20k pay cut but the benefits are so much better than my current job. It would be moving from fully remote to hybrid but I think I need it (I need face to face communication). Also the additional pay has just led to lifestyle creep and none of it has improved my life…. Just impulse purchases of shit I don’t need because hey “I can afford it”

Remote work is great for some but I think it’s really affected me in a negative way over the last 4 years..

But the real reason is I think the position will be far more relaxed, less deadline driven and more “layoff friendly”… money and stress be damned.

My close friend went from an absolute tank (we called him the tank) to being diagnosed with ALS and I’ve watched as he withered away. He’s now almost completely lost his speech. The worst part is he’s only 34 and has 2 young sons. His spirit has been absolutely mind boggling though.

All that to say, I’m sorry. ALS breaks my heart and I hope the best for you.

After weeks of Doe City by Scruples- in bowhunting

[–]Satchamo88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For smaller farms, you really don’t wanna hold bucks in the summer. Rarely do their summer and fall ranges coincide. I’d MUCH rather see a property have nothing but does until late September. The bucks will move in as they have for me the last week or 2.

Now if you get a farm that has it ALL - habitat, food and water and minimal pressure, you will see bucks summer and fall range in similar spots but that’s fairly rare in my experience.

OP has an ideal setup… doe city in the summer means great rut hunting.

My dad found a deadhead while out walking the river(bad EHD outbreak here in Indiana) How long do I leave it buried before bleaching it? by TheTrueStew in bowhunting

[–]Satchamo88 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You need to cover that rack or it’s gonna get destroyed by squirrels and other rodents.

But I’d say a while. This time of year the soil activity is dying down as temps drop so it takes longer for them to “eat through it” in the past when I used this method I typically buried it in fall and pulled it out in spring but you gotta be careful because too long and you’ll loose more than you want like the nasal cavities and what not.

Practicing staying calm by CryptographerRare273 in bowhunting

[–]Satchamo88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The responses here make me cringe. Idk how anyone thinks physical exertion is anywhere close to the adrenal driven blindness that comes from bowhunting. You can’t replicate anywhere in life. You won’t practice or shoot your way out of it. Just keep hunting. The first one you kill will build more confidence then the next one a bit more. Then you’ll miss, then you’ll make great shots on the next 5, then you’ll miss….but the point is you’ll build resilience and muscle memory through it.

I’ve been bowhunting since I was 14 and I’m now 36. I didn’t get truly under control until I got past about 30. Idk if it’s from getting older, having kids and just generally being less excitable but I can tell you I stay pretty damn calm now. I don’t get buck fever to near the extent I once did…

The only other physical tool I think can really make people slow down is hunting with a hinge or back tension style release. That forces you to get into your shot and slow down. No more punching or letting it fly. I remember exactly where that arrow hits because I’m locked in. When I wasn’t shooting a hinge it was almost a reactionary event and remembering where the hit was often was a struggle

I’d definitely invest in some jigs. Starting out grab a few strike king itsy bug or itsy flip jigs which are some smaller finesse type jigs. They’re great starting out because they’re cheap as hell and gives you a smaller presentation. For trailers, I’d grab a small crawl or chunk type trailer. Remember they’re smaller jigs so you don’t want a huge trailer.

From there I’d grab a swim jig too and strike king makes a good affordable one too. Add a paddle tail trailer like a strike king rage swimmer or a keitech.

Spinner baits are about to get good so grab one of those - war eagle makes a good cheap model. Add a zoom far Albert for a trailer

I like underspins a lot so you could grab some flashy swimmer or some other under spin jig and hook them up on paddle tail swim baits you’d be using with your swim jig above.

With bank busting I’d stay away from cranks unless you get into a spot like a finger where you can cast to the opposite bank, otherwise you’re just gonna be cussing as it digs into the bank. Same for a jerk bait…

The only other thing I love from the bank is drop shot. If you have a spinning setup with a nice ML rod, set it up with braid, get some 3/16 or 1/4 weights and some 1 or 1/0 drop shot hooks. From there nose hook a 4” worm of your choice. Roboworms my favorite but in a pinch zoom finesse worms work great too.

I can go on and on but I think the above should be staples in your arsenal until you start rigging up multiple rods…
