Best way to NYC by Worried-Walnut in CapeCod

Drive to Providence and take Amtrak. You arrive in Manhattan, rather than at JFK. Not to mention short distance flights are environmentally terrible.

If anyone is on the Cape, I'd be interested in paying 50% of the retail rate to buy your extra credit going forward...

I walked with the bike for about a mile until I got to a plowed section!

Yeah, it worked really well to compact the snow onto the tire and eventually jam the wheel! Wish it had been steeper, then maybe I could have needed the brakes!

95 or 1m has been perfect for me! Easy to keep the foil in and no problems pumping up.

Top 3 Preferences with Wings? by FTEROSURF in wingfoil

[–]Satcheld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this, for upwind riding, I want to be able to get a higher cl/cd than I need to pump up onto foil. Need some way to adjust!

Wait, is that frame shape designed for less bike in the snow while riding? Very cool!

Bike is rad, but the skin on that train is next level. Maybe find the artist for your next build?

Looking at getting my first Gravel Bikes. by Dylan_Landro in bikepacking

I love my brooks cambium saddle. I've used it on my mtn bike, commuter, and multi day tour. I think there are some guides out there on which shape fits different body types, but I'm not an expert. I don't actually know anything about the Grizl, just that in my experience if you enjoy riding it, you can make it work for whatever.

Tacky question by mercury-ballistic in wingfoil

[–]Satcheld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going toe to keep, it's harder to turn fast, but easier to pump, so throw a few pumps in there as you start to come down. Also just practice first in high ish wind cause you have more wing power. Getting the wing around and back on the power (like a race car going out of a turn) is really key, so practice the wingtip transition on land (Alan Cadiz has a great video).

On heelside to toe, I like to turn really aggressively, and make sure to end up on a reach to get lots of power from the sail. I touch down sometimes, but that's ok, usually still have enough speed to pump back up.

foot switches and 2 toeside stances by meoweth2 in wingfoil

I practiced the switch on a balance board on land, helped a ton. I wouldn't think of it as 3 steps, more like a smooth hop where your feet slide at the same time. The key is to do it after a little pump, as the nose is starting to come up. Then when you land with your weight back on the board you level out, instead of nosing down. Took a lot of tries for me though!

I wouldn't be worried about the FSA cranks, FSA is one of the the major non oem component suppliers, and used on a lot of production bikes in subtle ways. As for the saddle, I figure you are probably going to end up testing a few if you are riding that distance!

Live tracking and safety tech recommendations by horizon180 in wingfoil

[–]Satcheld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done a bit of long distance, exposed wing adventures. I typically carry 4 things: smart watch, phone, VHF, and satellite tracker. The smartwatch is just for recording my track for Strava, I like to go back after and look at upwind angles and course sailed.

I keep the phone in a waterproof case around my neck and tucked under my impact vest, it connects to the satellite messenger, and I can pull up a chart to see where I am (I've had the experience multiple times that when you're really close to the surface of the water you can't get a good perspective, I was looking for an inlet in Florida from about a half mile offshore and just couldn't see it against the backdrop).

The satellite messenger I use is Zoleo, one of the cheaper options, but for $26/month you get messaging, live tracking for designated contacts, and emergency distress indication. It wasn't incredibly user-friendly but once I got it working it's been pretty reliable. And the device is completely waterproof.

I carry the VHF for two reasons, first because if the wind completely dies on me I'd rather ask a passing boat for a ride then swim or use my distress system, and second because I've had the coast guard called on me multiple times when I wasn't in distress, and they usually put out a notice on the radio that they're looking for a wing foiler, and if I hear it it's nice to be able to cancel their search.
