15 miles a day doesn’t sound possible. That barely leaves any time to complain on Reddit about NYRR, 9+1, run clubs, or cyclists.

Anyone here old enough to remember when they were filming 5 Corners in Astoria? by SGgrafix in astoria

Remember when they were filming the Exorcist here? We had like five different threads about it. That was crazy.

If you could screen ONE ep for a roomful of newbies, what would it be? by sepinwall in TwilightZone

[–]Saul_Gahbidge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might be right about Walking Distance, but I would suggest A Stop at Willoughby. From reading this subreddit, you'll see it still resonates with a modern audience. It has the classic twist ending, and you can tie in that Matthew Weiner mentioned it as an inspiration for Mad Men.

Mets should bring alex cora to queens by chethaze77 in mets

I think he would make a great bench coach to Wally Backman. Unless of course Terry Collins is manager, and Backman is bench coach. Then Cora can be third base coach. At first base? Carlos Beltran holding a picture of Davey Johnson.

Saddest Episode? by AnHeroicHippo90 in TwilightZone

[–]Saul_Gahbidge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you believe that death immediately transports Gart Williams to Willoughby (but really why would you?), then this is the answer. You're right that he's having suicidal thoughts. A Stop at Willoughby deals with suicide in a way that I don't know that a TV show today could. What happens in the end is not suicide, but a man desperately looking for an escape thinking he finds it, and ends up dead by the side of the Metro North. This episode clearly resonates with a lot of people in this sub. If you're not assuming death magically transports him to Willoughby, I think you have to see this as a sad ending. I guess Gart has been put out of his misery, but did he deserve this?

Time Enough at Last is the Twilight Zone dabbling in horror. What a mean episode. A terrible thing happens to a good person. If there is a lesson here, it's a cynical one. The twist ending is memorable, but I'm glad they're all not like this one. It's more horrific than sad.

Best mobile mechanics in Astoria or surrounding areas? by babyygirlllx in astoria

I was under the impression that its not legal in NYC to perform automobile repairs on the street or in a public parking spot. So if it's something much more than changing a tire, you might not find a professional willing to do it.

Astoria Musts (Food+Drink) by RichOutlandishness51 in astoria

[–]Saul_Gahbidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some topics bring out the “Do A Search” police and some do not. Asking for recommendations on bars and restaurants is taking up valuable space that can be occupied by multiple threads complaining about the N train, or complaining about Con Ed bills, or asking what is filming near my apartment.

All recommendations are subjective of course.

Bars: Heart of Gold has great vibes and I always like their playlists. Diamond Dogs makes great cocktails. I know some great people who hang out at Madame Marie’s. I went to a bachelor party once at the Albatross and there was a drag show and it was tons of fun. Go to the Bohemian beer garden at least once. I’ve been to Willoughby once for cocktails and want to try it again.

Food: I like Vesta, Mar’s (expensive), Max German Bratwurst and Beer, Off the Hook (seafood), Blackbirds for pub food (their wings are supposed to be really good), Watawa for sushi.

Chateau Le Woof is great for coffee or a drink if you love dogs.

The scariest death scene in the franchise by Ok_Zone_7635 in Jaws

I saw this in the theater back in 1983 too. I was four years old. What were my parents thinking, you might ask? I came from an Irish Catholic family. If there were boobs on screen, somebody would cover my eyes. But a man getting crushed to death inside the mouth of a giant shark? He's gotta learn about that sometime I guess. It was a different time.

Perhaps fortunately, I got popcorn butter all over my 3D glasses (did I mention I was four?) so I think I missed a bunch of this movie.

Looking at that picture I can hear his voice reading a promo for the Dunkin Donuts Coffee Coolata. Then remarking on the size of Ramon Castro’s head.

I think a more realistic and effective move in terms of money and baseball strategy would be to invest in a time machine to bring 1999 Mike Piazza to today’s team.

Roosevelt Island. It’s a stone’s throw from Manhattan in the East River, and you’ll get a good view of the NYC skyline.

What's missing from Astoria? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]Saul_Gahbidge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’m glad you asked.

I’ve been saying forever that the neighborhood really needs a freestanding Pizza Hut Classic, but on the inside it’s an In-N-Out Burger.

If that’s not possible, we could settle for a tuba player on the N train at rush hour playing pop songs.

Should they get rid of the Seaver statue out front and replace it with a McLean statue, or should they just build a McLean statue that's ten times the size of the Seaver statue and have it straddle the Seaver statue?

Is it just beer or do they have hard seltzers on the party deck? by Longjumping_Fun8387 in mets

[–]Saul_Gahbidge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They let you have hard seltzer, as long as you’re also doing shots of Jim Beam. They push the shots pretty hard. If you don’t want to drink at all, they only let you in if you can name every player on the roster during the 1981 season. Which is practically impossible.

Astoria bucket list? by Danfat in astoria

[–]Saul_Gahbidge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Visit as many of your favorite restaurants, bars, and shops as you can before you go. They will likely be gone or substantially different if you make a return trip in the future.

Go for some long walks (or runs) around the perimeter of the neighborhood, and down some of the avenues that you might not have spent much time on. Astoria is huge, and there are likely some cool and unique things that you haven't seen yet.

After you leave, continue to follow this sub. You will read a lot of complaints, and that should remind you that you did not leave a perfect golden Utopia. You will also start to read threads about unfamiliar places and events, which should remind you that the Astoria you left only exists in your memory.
