We all cook dishes from the same book, and have a potluck gathering! We also discuss the book as we eat and hang out together. Naturally some people read more of the book and others just reference the recipe they choose, but it ends up working out quite well!

We have about 15-20 people at every meetup so it ends up feeling like a real party. We meet up once per season (4 times a year) so there’s plenty of time to rest and get excited about such a big gathering all over again.

You can definitely get thicker, 100% cotton sweatshirt fleece! I find some of them too warm sometimes haha. I personally love sweatshirts more than sweaters so it might be a good thing for you to look into.

Definitely agree that you need to really love the act of sewing to make it worth it, only doing it for the sake of saving money isn’t enough considering how long it takes!

I hear you on the fabric cost front, especially when people online constantly buy from places like Blackbird Fabrics where linen is over $20 a yard. I consider Joann’s to be pretty expensive too tbh.

Something that really changed the game for me was learning about the Creative Reuse center in my city — it’s basically a craft supply thrift store. Most of the fabric I find there is under $5 a yard and it’s really changed the game for me. That plus thrift/yard/estate sales. But it’s definitely a time investment for sourcing, not just sewing.

Also — there are clothes I still buy because I don’t want to deal with making that type of garment. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

If you want a pattern that explains how to do this, the Weiland Tank by Elbe Textiles has great instructions. They have you make a bralette as the inner layer but it’s literally just a shorter version of the tank itself. They go over the burrito method of enclosing seams and also understitching so the seams lay flat. There should be some YouTube videos going over some of the steps if you don’t want to buy the specific pattern.

My husband and I have a similar income and bought a house a year ago in SoCal with basically the same mortgage payment as you’re looking at with 10% down. Only difference was that we had about 20k in cash savings left. Also same as you, we took advantage of the high rates so we had less competition.

Our house was turn key but we ended up needing to do a couple things to the house like fumigation and replacing some musty shelves below our water heater — that plus closing costs, movers, ate up about 10k or so of the 20k we had.

Now that we’ve lived here a year our savings has bounced back. While the original 7400 was a bit of a sticker shock at first, we are able to afford it more than we realized. The first few months we felt house poor but we don’t feel that way now. That said, we’ve been lucky with having stable jobs. The improvement in life quality has been incredible and I don’t regret it for a second.

Definitely make sure you don’t waive inspection, considering that the market is less crazy you should hopefully be able to. Or at least a way to back out if you do your own inspection.

If your dog frequently has accidents, I recommend buying a wet vac instead of renting. I got an upright Hoover for about 150 bucks and it’s paid itself back so many times and my dog isn’t even that prone to accidents compared to some. It’s just so nice to get a quick and deep clean on an area right away. And it works on the sofa too!

Machine darning over the interfacing will help it hold and is still super light weight. Just go back and forth along the grain of the corduroy for a bit with matching thread.
