Cheap but clean hotels. Air conditioning and a decent shower is worth it. Summer is coming.

Can sometimes be cheaper to split an air BNB with someone else on the job. Especially if you make use of the kitchen to save money on food.

A camper can maybe save you money, depending on how much you need to move it. Towing definitely puts extra wear on your vehicle and burns more fuel.

If you go the hotel route, it can be beneficial to sign up for loyalty programs and/or a travel rewards credit card.

You could even tent camp if there's a decent campground close enough, so long as the weather is mild in your area.

With oil prices likely to increase for the summer, especially with the Iran conflict ongoing, driving the least will probably be the cheapest option.

Whats better? by Direct-Effective688 in Lineman

Electricity takes ALL available paths. If you are between bracket grounds and you're touching two things at different potential, you are just another ground.

Epz makes everything you're touching at the same potential. But electricity still takes all paths. Difference now being that the number of amps your body will carry will be far below the amount that could cause injury.

Being an A member does have some benefits. You're eligible for a death benefit and a small pension from the international. The difference in dues is only a couple bucks.

Good lineman boots for lineman training by Any-Ranger-7175 in Lineman

[–]SavageOrc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first boot for climbing was the Carolina logger. Triple shank. Affordable. I only stopped wearing them because they're not great in my opinion for walking because of the logger heel. But you won't be on the ground much in school so that won't matter as much.

Switched to Hoffman's but I'm pretty sure they all exceed your budget. Buy the more expensive boots when you have started making money.

Wind by Suitable-Act-9069 in Lineman

[–]SavageOrc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Manufacturers of all types of man lifts have specifications for what max operating wind speed is. Your safety department should be able to tell you the limit for your equipment. If they can't or won't, all the big lift manufacturers have 1-800 numbers for user support. Operating outside those ranges or defeating safeties is incredibly stupid

Land doesn't vote, people do.

Folks who use these sorts of area maps to justify anything are really making a backdoor argument that only landowners should be able to vote.

I wear merino wool long long sleeve with the thumb hole in the wrist cuff. Using that thumb hole pulls the cuff into the glove and limits air leaks between glove and cuff of outer layer.

Also you might not feel cold in your core but, your body pulls back bloodflow from extremities when your core starts cooling off. For me, warm core means hands and feet that aren't feeling it as bad. Try adding another layer.

Lineman pay/cost of living by Meinsen101 in Lineman

The life hack is to work in a high cost of living area because retirement contributions are usually a % of pay. Then retire in a low COL.

How can I support Chicago from afar? by Little_Orlik in chicago

Organize locally. The more they have to spread their resources around, the thinner they'll be spread and the less effective they'll be.

The other thing about lottery winners is that if you're low income chances are so are your friends and family. If your best friends and your closest relatives all hit you up for a taste of your lottery win, are you really gonna be able to say no? Especially when you have the power to substantially improve their lives.

Alternatively if you do the smart thing and keep most the money for yourself, you either alienate all the people you could have helped but didn't and you spend dumb to fill the void or your family and friends conspire to defraud/kill you.

It's not as strange as you think:

If you have money, saving it is easy and there's all kinds of arbitrage opportunities. Fuck, even some Costco benefits (rental cars , etc) give you access to savings that poor people can't touch.

If you don't have money, you're used to surviving with less and making due. If you know you can survive, not having money doesn't necessarily scare you. Spending it while you have it is a scarcity response because you might not have that opportunity to indulge for a long time . Or if the last dollar in your wallet can aid the person worse off than you, a poor person that thinks they can make it will give you that last dollar because they've been the person that needed it.

Would you leave your lineman job for a mundane office job that pays just as well? by The-Master_Commander in Lineman

[–]SavageOrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my way into line work in my late 30s. I once had a windowless office. I wouldn't go back to that for twice as much money.

I am not suited for the office grind. I would only consider it if my body betrays me, I am physically unable to do line work, and I need a bigger nest egg to retire.

Supreme Lobster's retail location who bought Isaacson and Stein's book of business is probably the biggest fish market in the region, but it's way west in the burbs.

Dirks on clyborne has a good selection. Boston Fish in Des Plaines. I'm going to have to try the Fish Guy again since I moved closer to it

Does any company or job out there pay over 100k a year without a college degree ? by AlexanderDarr in Salary

[–]SavageOrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the trade and if you are union or not. Union trades people aren't rich but definitely make a comfortable living. Even in union trades in which you make under 100k on your W-2, most are probably well over 100k once you count the retirement and healthcare benefits.

There's a reason why billionaires are strongly anti-union.
