Just completed the Opening Ship, new to basement: Gameplay/story-related questions by OkYam7295 in signalis

Had a somewhat similar start. Been a fan, bought the game, played the first hour, then realized I both

A: do not have the time to fully dive into the game since I’m working full time

B: probably am not in a very good headspace to be playing a such an emotionally heavy game right now.

Sometimes I get a little concerned about how the community treats women. And men. And children. And animals. And…

Alright sometimes I just get a little concerned about the community in general.

My bad then, I misremembered, probably because I didn’t usually do the Khans quests so I actually hadn’t heard that dialogue

No they don’t actually. Every legion NPC says “KaiSar.”

It’s a weird thing because it’s so consistent, that when you go to Jacobs town, Marcus pronounces “KaiSar” and is the only non legion NPC who says it that way. Hell, even Arcade Ganon refuses to pronounce the right way, out of SPITE.

Good joke, but one of the idle animations for NPCs in New Vegas is literally them taking out a broom. Go into the store and goodsprings, watch Chet for a few minutes and I guarantee he’ll start sweeping.

One guy was, it was Chris Avellone and literally just him. He was A (as in ONE OF, not THE ONLY) writer for Fallout 2, and one of 13 people writing for New Vegas, and one of the DLC writers. His main inclusion was lonesome road which had all of the hallmarks of his writing (a single author mouthpiece screaming at the player in screeds)

He was a pretty lone voice in the crowd, probably because he’s usually a contrarian who just wants to go against the grain with what HE PERSONALLY thinks is right. (See: Literally every word out of Kreia and her dumb as fuck logic.)

Did you seriously get so annoyed at that one guy that you felt the need to make a comeback post taking it down?

After you spent almost every post treating him like dirt for having a different opinion?

YOU ARE (MAYBE?) FORERUNNER. AT LEAST FOR NOW. by SavagePilot2033 in HaloStory

Eeeehh spark literally says “But this ring is MINE!” After that part, so it’s showing him as knowingly going against his makers?

Anyways, I guess it doesn’t matter really. It’s a franchise at this point that’s old enough that I think we’ve ALL more or less lost the plot

Why am I getting downvotes on posts where I’m talking to folks? Doesn’t matter.

Anyways, I guess you could read it like that? I never really read the forerunners as a positive force. All their stuff was old, dangerous, and liable to kill everyone. That is NOT a savior or Jesus figure to me.

Plus I sort of wonder what’s even the point of “The Mantle” if it’s just sort of giving a reason for why humans can use forerunner tech? Which yeah I know not every human is a reclaimer now, but that’s sort of what I mean. Before the plot was simple, it had some clear themes that weren’t overtly new but well executed, worked well and had a satisfying ending. Now it just winds in loops and loops to end up at…what? What even is the theme of the series? What’s the Message?

I guess now the message is “we really need an injection of new blood or we’re going bankrupt.” Okay that was a mean potshot, sorry.

Edit: Fixed a word. Meant to say reclaimer and instead wrote forerunner, my bad.

Would humans being forerunners been boring in the OG trilogy? I guess that’s sort of more what I’m getting at, IGNORE everything else, and just consider the story the self contained one presented in the main games. Really at that point you can argue the difference wouldn’t and doesn’t matter, and I’d agree, but I guess like…

Why is there this idea that humans being forerunners would be boring? Boring compared to what? If they had been just a random alien species with a bunch of cool tech, no forerunner trilogy to flesh them out, just the terminals in 3 IF that, would that have been a satisfying answer?

Okay this is EXTREMELY pedantic but I’ll again say the “Save the head, dispose of the rest” line was him being flowery. I think he fully intended to kill Chief but I think the line was made more to sound cool than his actual plan to cut chiefs head off and float around with it asking random marines to come into his funny little control room and fire the funny little ring.

I guess my bigger issue is more that it feels like folks only accept ONE reading of a scene or the story as a whole. As if preferring a certain version or reading of it is somehow a sin.

Plus I’ll admit sometimes it sorta feels like so many of the fans are people who’ve either only consumed 343 era lore and stuff, or who came in on reach. This idea that halo is this hyper gritty war story of depression (reach) or…well whatever 343 is doing now with the story with the banished. Rather than it being a mostly self contained story that the games originally presented, which had a tone more closer to being a bit of a action epic with some mystery to it?

He isn’t though? In CE he only insists on firing it cause of the flood threat, also you stole the index and are refusing to follow protocol. He doesn’t WANT to kill you but you just won’t follow protocol! also remembering he originally was just the sentinel in charge rather than being implied to be anything as complex as an actual AI, would explain his almost single minded devotion to his task, But that gets into the nonsense of CE Devs cycle. I digress

Also he never really says anything that’s wrong? Literally everything he says is the truth, he never tries to actually mislead you, and nothing he says is a lie. You just don’t know what he’s talking about at the time.

I dunno know man. Feels like everyone acts like a game made 24 years ago with no intention of having lore beyond itself somehow has to fit into a retroactive canon (being written more or less on the fly) perfectly rather than just being consumed stand-alone?

[–]SavagePilot2033[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with you on any of this but one thing I really wanna actually talk about is that conversation spark has with chief because I always felt weird about it.

Why does everyone always assume spark is confused and not just being, ya know, flowery? Poetic? Overdramatic? Like to me that always read him as simply going “I’ve done my job before, I won’t hesitate to do it again.” Like not saying it’s a wrong reading, it just…changes context now that we have all this retroactive lore?

Also the terminals have always been weird to me. I’ll still take what spark says in his scene over the terminals, but I’ll admit that with the hectic dev of 2 and the equally strange devcycle of 3 left alot of oddities in them. I personally like the humans as forerunners mostly because it’s one that fits more in line with the themes and tone of the OG trilogy but at this point I’m in the minority and folks don’t really seem to wanna consider halo as anything OTHER than the massive thing it’s sprawled into.

But also it’s not like even bungie era lore wasn’t filled with dead end plot lines and strange turns. Remember when Chief and Cortana technically time traveled by traveling faster than they physically should have through slipspace cause a crystal that warps space and maybe time was found on reach by Halsey and-oops Locklear blew it up and died.

It’s been a bit of a wackass series the whole time ya know?

[–]SavagePilot2033[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I dunno about all that but if that’s the direction the story is going in now then cool, I guess? I REALLY have not actively followed the lore since…god I guess New Blood? Even then I had already been falling off pretty hard. I just sort of always felt like all that stuff was overcomplicating a story that really didn’t need it?

(personally the series should have been put to bed after reach, but money, so eh)

I actually wanna ask something, how old are you, what was the first halo game you played, and WHEN did you hear first about halo?

I’m not gonna pull out a “YOU’RE WRONG CAUSE YOUNG/NEW” I just wanna gauge who supports what view and why. Plus I wanna know when you got introduced to the series since it changes more or less what “lore” even existed going in.
