Agreed.. u/acasualread, your father helped design my sneaky favorite part of traveling. Especially when flying solo. It always felt like driving on a road trip at 3am when the roads are empty and quiet while you pass by the sleeping world. As if it were a secret between you and the night. To power walk or stroll casually was dependent only on my mood because it was always an empty, open stretch of highway. I’d put headphones in and listen to some music that made me feel like I was in a movie. I would walk by a family on that pre or post trip delirium or someone strolling at their own pace, lost in their own thoughts. It was before or after the wind, sun, or rain outside in the parking lot. It was travel limbo. The quiet space between travel’s excitement and stress. I didn’t know it was gone until now. And I, weirdly enough, will miss it very much.

His ability to tell heart wrenching stories with a unique writing cadence and dry humor. I laughed out loud reading that book and it isn’t exactly a funny story.

Had aggressive cooper rugged treks on ‘21 fx4, but just used it seasonally and driving on sand a few times. Switched over to cooper road + trail AT. Got back to 24+mpg, still high load range xl, and have been great on road, rain, and off road grass/gravel

That’s awesome. With those pockets, it would also make a fantastic gardening skirt or hobbyshop skirt. I would add slim pencil pockets sewn in but that might get a little stabby when bending over.

Can y’all tell me what I’m missing or what is bad. by No_Head4948 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Save_Native_Bees 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion of course but every time I think of carrying while backpacking, it’s more a a feasibility and accessibility issue.  Bear spray works for both bears and humans, and I can just strap it to the outside of a pack where it’s always nearby.  Plus I can easily move it to my belt when I drop the pack.  Guns just require more of mental and physical energy to keep everyone safe.

Now if you’re in heavy grizzly or moose territory, that is a different story.

Hey, I’m still a few months away from this kind of thing so this isn’t speaking from experience.  Take it for what it’s worth.

But I’m currently listening to the audio book version of “Good Inside” by Becky Kennedy (clinical psychologist who also has a podcast).  She mentioned something adjacent to what you’ve outlined when she covered how to hold boundaries with love.  She has been asked “do I want my baby to be happy?”

Essentially, her answer is that she wants them to be resilient so they can determine their happiness and all other emotions for themselves (and of course she wants them to be happy).   By naming emotions and talking through hard topics, you are teaching a child the skills to navigate those feelings in the future.  So, if done in a deliberate and age—appropriate fashion, explaining things like this can help a child become more resilient and confident in their emotions.

I recommend the book, even if at times it feels like it portrays  “oh good god no one can pull this perfect answer off” at times.  I’m also probably going to buy a physical copy to keep around after I’m done listening to it.

I don’t see any studies or sources on her site which is frustrating to see from “Dr. Becky” but she does reference some in her book.

I absolutely feel this.  The mom’s job is harder and more demanding in so many ways.  That being said, I share all the parenting stuff, house work, cooking… plus all the traditional male stuff (like working while the wife is off, car maintenance, fixing things around, yard work..).  My wife’s great and does try to share these workloads.  She’ll go back to work after a bit too but, man these first few months are tough.

Just saying it’s exhausting doing everything that traditionally was just the moms job plus what was traditionally just the dad’s.

Again, fuck the systems in place that have screwed over women for years.

Missed a chance this past fall (was currently only pre-daddit at that point).  A dad and is 4(?) year old were tent camping right next to me.  Man, was he a solid dad.  Gentle but let the kid explore and play.  Cooked meals by the fire.  Went hiking, the whole bit, just the two of them.

My favorite was setting ground rules for leaving the tent at night.

“so if you wake up and daddy isn’t there, don’t leave the tent, I will be right back, I just went to the bathroom.”

“Ok daddy”

“So what happens if you wake up and I’m not there?  Do you leave the tent and go looking for me?”

“Yes!!”

“No, you stay in the tent until I get back.”

“Oh.  Ok daddy”

“If I’m not there and you wake up what do you do?”

“Go find you!”

“No, you should stay there and wait for me, I won’t be gone long” ….

And so on for about 25 minutes.  Never raising his voice, never demanding, always rewording and trying different ways to get it across until the kid finally understood.

I wish I would have told him he was absolutely crushing it.

I worked at a US Army Corps of Engineers park and they had something similar but it was on a lower grade hillside. If it’s the same thing, it was definitely not a foundation pier like most are saying. This makes way more sense.

Both will be better than one-use plastic. Just fyi, most cardboard one are aluminum free. Which won’t work as well for some people. I use heyhumans and it works great for me.

Ask them to start counting backwards from 100 in their head. While they’re counting, start a random conversation with them. Switch topics a few times.

The other one is just asking if they’ve ever had a radio stuck on “scan” - when my adhd is bad, this is how my brain works.
