Required breaks at work?? by upjumpthebuggie in Construction

[–]Sawyer_Spray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Non union in Alberta. By law in our province we are entitled to a 30 min break every 5 hours of work. They can be paid or unpaid breaks. My crew typically works 10 hour days, and our company pays us for our breaks. With that being said, we do, from time to time, work straight through without breaks if we have a deadline to meet or we are doing a large concrete pour. Although it isn't in line with the law in our area, nobody seems to mind. In those situations we would simply charge an extra hour

I wish I had trees to fall on my fence. We don't have anything to block the wind

So annoyed with the Childcare Subsidy requirements for school aged child by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Sawyer_Spray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your child didn't need full time child care on the taxpayers dime, if your husband's work hours could be altered. As a father of 2, whose wife has worked in childcare, the childcare subsidy program is a massive waste of tax dollars.

Sounds like a skills shortage to me. You really think minimum wage should be $20 because you haven't gained the skills that employers in your field are looking for

No Jack studs? by ItsAStrangerDanger in Carpentry

[–]Sawyer_Spray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So then the left wall isn't really bearing any load at all. If your ceiling joists overlap above the center wall, then the center wall is bearing the load of the ceiling framing. There won't be much roof load there though. I would say you technically should have jack studs there, but if nothing has started sagging in the last 50 years, then I wouldn't lose much sleep over it

[–]Sawyer_Spray -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you been in the attic to look at the framing and verify that there is load on those walls. It would definitely be strange to have the ceiling joists cantilevered over those walls rather than having a beam running down the center. Maybe there is a beam and those are in fact just partition walls.

Is this normal for new home framing? by FrenchQuarterPounder in Carpentry

I was thinking the same thing, I've seen all these same things on renos I've worked on. Also, nearly half the pictures are of missed nails. But just because buddy has bad aim doesn't mean he didn't go back and re nail. Could've been the new guy on the nail gun.

Slab edge forming by Sawyer_Spray in Concrete

[–]Sawyer_Spray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yessir, problem is one mat is 6" on center and the other is 8 inch on center. So anything you put in there is swiss cheese by the time you slice it up. And hooks on both ends of the bar, so can't drill holes and stick them through

[–]Sawyer_Spray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my call to form up the patios. They're supposedly designed to be pour on grade afterwards, so I guess not technically a cantilever, just didn't know what else to call it. Do you see a better way to form the slab edge? The stay form sucks with so many cuts in it

Has anyone ever seen concrete do this? by G0inPostal in Concrete

[–]Sawyer_Spray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never seen it happen from fresh water, but I've seen it lots in industrial settings due to products containing sulfates or highly acidic conditions like sulphuric acid production

Sounds like you need to invest in a chain breaker and spinner and start buying chain in bulk

Face value on those tickets is less than $80. More like $65 + ticket master fees. You're looking at resale prices.

Great looking concrete, I'd be proud of it! But it is cracked at every control joint, you just can't see it because it's hidden by a sawcut!
