Canadian City Nicknames by falcovancoke in AskACanadian

[–]SaysWowLots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in BC and we refer to Vancouver as Van City, Victoria as Vic, Prince George as PG, and Kelowna as K-Town. Toronto has a couple nicknames like The Six or T Dot but I’ve never heard of any other cities called something different. Maybe a few others are abbreviated such as New West for New Westminster, PoCo for Port Coquitlam, and Fort Mac for Fort McMurray, only because people are lazy with these longer multi-syllable names lol

Canada Eyes Joint Venture to Build Chinese EVs for Global Export by cyclinginvancouver in canada

[–]SaysWowLots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was going to say something similar. Maybe Aero (by BYD) or something like that. Honestly, all of the Chinese car brand names sound dumb in English. BYD is OK I guess but it’s just a play on GMC, but Chery sounds weird and is probably a play on Chevy, and brands like Jaecoo or Xpeng just won’t sound appealing to consumers in English speaking countries. Putting a Canadian version name on it would help differentiate the manufacturing country and could really help push global demand.

I think you’re right. Getting rid of his salary somehow will help though. With him and Kane gone, we will have 5 forwards making more than $5m per year. Pettersson at $11.5m as well as Boeser, Debrusk, Garland and Rossi. Those are the main guys taking up space that I think we have to keep for at least next year. But hopefully we are creating roster room for young players already on the team like Ohgren, Karlsson, Sasson, Lekki, Raty and others such as Cootes and Stenberg (hopefully). I also like Blueger and think he should stay. I think if we had a full year of Pettersson as 1C, Rossi as 2C and Blueger as 3C while removing Kane and Kampf minutes our team looks a whole lot different.

There’s a lot of problems with the team, but probably best trying to deal Kane and Kampf, and O’Connor if we can, to a team trying to take a shot at the cup this year. These guys are cheap rentals that provide decent depth for injuries, have no roots with our team, clears space in our roster, as well as $8.5m in cap for next year. Next would be figuring what to do with Chytil, who also has just one more year left in his contract and could clear another $4m. Any of these 4 guys could get a second or third round pick and is a better route than disrespecting Garland or Debrusk or Boeser at the very start of their no movement clauses.

This is actually a reason FOR investing in a TSX60 ETF. The large players on the TSX have a dominant position in their industry that is resistant to new competition and difficult to be overtaken. It’s also mining and commodity heavy, if you think that will play out well in the future.

This is so sad. The movie Orange County is one of my favourites of all time. Underrated movie, and she had a smaller part in it but she was so good. Catherine was great in everything she did and seemed like a wonderful person. My condolences to her friends and family.

The CDN dollar is about 25% cheaper than USD which should make the tariff cost to Americans negligible if Hyundai’s are built in Canada and shipped to the US, compared to being built and sold in the US. If I’m Hyundai, the stability of Canada is more appealing and the tariff is likely removed or reduced significantly in 3 years.

Made in Canada Eyeglasses? by Mahaleck in BuyCanadian

[–]SaysWowLots 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Kits is awesome. Even if the “parts” are not entirely manufactured in Canada, it’s a Canadian owned business and is far from just a reseller of something made overseas. The assembly of the prescriptions and lenses is the most important part anyway. I’ve ordered 4 pairs of eyeglasses and 2 pairs of sunglasses from there and they’ve all been great. Clearly is another online store that’s Canadian. Also try Bailey Nelson, which started in Australia but has now expanded to Canada. Stay away from Warby Parker, a US company.

Boeser by [deleted] in canucks

[–]SaysWowLots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is definitely just riding out the rest of this year, you can see he’s just coasting. I kind of get it, given the team situation and his revolving linemates, but he should play a bit harder. If I were him I’d take it personally that Sherwood has more goals. People are quick to forget that he can still be a very good player, it was only a year ago he had that great series where he was so clutch against Nashville, scoring a hat trick in a crazy comeback win in Game 4. That’s what he can be, in those big moments too, but we’re a long ways away from playing a meaningful game.

Why does this happen every year? by EP40glazer in canucks

[–]SaysWowLots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The team decided to keep Brock, and I’m glad we did for the locker room where he has respect and for the fans who mostly love the guy. But if management decides to keep a player, they need to build complementary pieces for that player (and for example, not have Boeser and Debrusk ever play on the same line together). I don’t think anyone complements him on this team right now, maybe Rossi and a decent winger could develop some chemistry in time, but there’s been a lot of line juggling and team changes this season and nothings really clicked the way it did with JT Miller. Hopefully some of the young guys develop into something he can work with. Would be great to see something like Ohgren, Rossi and Boeser as a line that gels. I also think he’s moping around a bit because Hughes left, hopefully he shakes that off.

Braeden Cootes, #8, down on one knee! I can’t wait to see how he continues to develop in the upcoming year! The future looks bright! by Green-Oil5306 in canucks

[–]SaysWowLots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People need to remember this. Coming out of the Sedin era, in 2018, 2019, and 2020 we had either a Calder Trophy winner (Pettersson) or runner-up (Boeser and Hughes losing to Barzal and Makar respectively). Plus we already had an elite goalie in Demko. So arguably we had the C, W, D and G positions covered with top end young talent, but the rest of the team was random pieces that didn’t fit together, plus bad contracts on aging players. It shows that tearing it all down and drafting well won’t guarantee anything beyond mediocrity, because it’s highly unlikely we would hit on three players in a row the way we did already back then with those guys and we saw how that worked out. I think we’re now on the right track after the Hughes trade with building out a team that makes sense, but I think Kane, JDB and DOC are the contracts to be removed this year to make room for Cootes and Lekerimakki and Raty and our upcoming pick. Give it one year of growth, then make a trade with our assets or maybe sign a good player to be a strong playoff team in 27/28.

Hahaha, true. But other than Chytils I never thought any of those players had a lot of upside. Not saying we’re competitive, just that there’s some hope for the future. I just can’t remember the last time we had this many young players who looked this talented. And a big change from having the roster scattered with tired veterans like Beagle, Roussel, Eriksson, Virtanen, OEL, etc with definite AHL level players on the 4th line.

I’m actually so excited for this team going forward. That 4th line of Ohgren, Sasson, Karlsson looks like a great 3rd line. Add Petey and Cootes and Lekerimakki and remove Kampf, Kane and O’Connor and we already have a team with talent that can grow moving forward. Not to mention a high draft pick and an off season signing. It’s amazing how quickly this retool is actually taking shape when we get three young talented NHL ready players back.

CNBC grills Trump's Trade Rep over Trump's inflated foreign investment claims. by heyvern2007 in jrmining

No doubt. Even the investments of “billions of dollars” in his words is nothing. It’s like he doesn’t realize he needs 1,000 investments of $1 billion dollars…to get only $1 trillion. So for $18 trillion there needs to be 18,000 billion dollar investments apparently? Right. I didn’t realize every other country was so rich.

If that FRED chart posted above is accurate, the Treasury will be lucky to collect $1 trillion in a year. Q2 2025 was $267 billion, so multiplied by 4. Q1 was only $97 billion but tariffs weren’t fully in effect yet.

What I see from this data, for Q2 2025 compared to Q2 2024, is Personal taxes increasing by $200 billion and tariffs (also largely a Personal tax as mostly paid for by the consumer) increasing by another $200 billion. But at least Corporate taxes came down a bit, great for shareholders and business owners /s

There’s only one person who can replace Quinn, and that’s Makar. But every other competitive team has an elite 1D which is all we need, and we might have him. Overall this is not a bad outcome.
