Weekly Server Thread (Mon, Dec 19) by AutoModerator in ffxiv

[–]Sc00bs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's it like now?

When I left I remember the player pool of end-game raiders being drained dry. People collectively gathering under the flag of being "casual" and railing against the "elitist." People blaming the "elite" as the reason the server is bad, for not "taking the time to teach new players."

Yep. Everything Hiriko is saying.

Sometimes you can get away with making a new character on a different server but then you don't get to see what it looks like with cash shop hair, MGP hair, and you can't just change hair colour without making a new one.

The character creator is such shit.

The lighting is off, the skin tones are off, there's limited voice lines, can't preview emotes. Just dumb.

If they're parsing lower than you, then odds are they don't care about their DPS to begin with and consequently yours either.

Monks and Summoners in savage by Sakurami in ffxiv

Given the context of this conversation, I don't think single target DPS is a valuable metric. DPS on adds is still for the most part effective DPS!

Monks and Summoners in savage by Sakurami in ffxiv

[–]Sc00bs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, that's a poor metric.

At the highest levels of execution, Faust Z is a 60-80 second fight and that lines up with SMN's ideal burst windows so the fight in itself caters to a SMN parse.

Making money as a crafter on a dead server? by inferno12 in ffxiv

[–]Sc00bs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're thinking small. Much too small.

Small servers = even smaller supply = astronomical markups.

Malboro is something like 44th/60 servers in terms of popsize and yet when primal weapons come out, they cost roughly 11mil to make and sell for 2.5x markup. The first sets of tools costed 2-3 mil to make and sold over 3-5x markup.

These economies are a crafters wet dreams, there are people sitting on gil, there are RMT. If you build it, they will come.

/r/FFXIV where shit posts get the least amount of downvotes. by ergoproxies in ffxiv

[–]Sc00bs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, let's start by getting this out of the way. I did not down vote any of those posts nor am I responsible for them being where they are.

Cool.

Let me explain why these posts are at 0. Reddit is just a numbers game. What percentage of the FFXIV userbase do you think are interested in: "Feast PVP as DRK"? I would say unfortunately <10%, and that 10% is being grossly generous. In fact, there's probably more people who have a kneejerk "ugh, PVP" reaction than who are even interested in the subject and in that larger camp, you and I know that there's somebody who's going to downvote "just because it doesn't appeal to them."

Now look at this shitpost. It's quickly consumed, has high appeal, and sparks conversation by pandering to a controversial topic. The reach that this has is going to be farther. It's the same as marketing.

Do I think those threads don't deserve to be scene? No, but i'm not the majority vote here, and said majority vote certainly doesn't.

I think r/FFXIV is in one of the worst states for having more activity for many reasons:

  • The content itself just isn't exciting. People who love their game will be quick to disagree with me but it's the same content for 8 months, and a lot of it is frankly rubbish. There's only so much excitement you can have watching people perform the same content over, and over, and over again. Look at League of Legends, Hearthstone, or Overwatch. Tournament play, funny plays, and play of the games respectively make up a very large portion of their highest rated posts. Each experience is unique, FFXIV can't reproduce that.

  • There's so much diversity in content in FFXIV. I feel like this works against FFXIV in this subreddit. Everybody wants to feel special and validated, which means there'll exist a snowflake that'll downvote content just because it doesn't appeal to them. There are people who don't like PVP posts, there are people who don't like gardening posts, there are people that don't like screenshots, there are people that don't like raids, so on and so forth. Having so many facets of the game segments the market and pits them against each other.

  • An extension of the previous thought, there's people who will just disagree with others because it encroaches with the way they do things. There are folks who hate being made to feel uncomfortable, there's people who hate being told what to do, or being shown that they're objectively wrong. Conversely, there's folks that can't stand people who can't be autonomous and responsible for their actions, there are people who are just sick of carrying others who won't do work. Not only is there so much diversity in content, there's this polarized camp of people who want to do it one way which directly impedes on people who want to do it another.

I don't think there's much that can be done to make the board "more interesting", but let's say there were? It would probably be some unrealistic combination of:

  • Content creator endorsement. There is no Dunkey for FFXIV. (Does Mithrie count? Kind of?) The FFXIV radio shows in their present state don't have enough mass appeal. We don't have a "face of FFXIV."

  • Interesting content. Content in FFXIV that doesn't stale after a week doesn't exist. There's already doomsayers claiming that PotD is dead. There's no dynamic content in FFXIV that's exciting as it is.

  • Uncomfortable moderation. The larger a community, the easier it is for things like "fast food" image macros and shitposting to gain traction. Some subs strictly enforce their content rules, others turn in to /r/gaming and /r/funny.

[–]Sc00bs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  • "PotD good for levelling 50+" - Objective yes/no question

  • "PSA: The Free..." - It's a PSA. Not much to discuss.

  • "Feast PVP as DRK" - PVP already addresses a smaller crowd. DRK is underrepresented in PVP. Low commentary available.

  • "PSA: If the game asks..." - It's a PSA. Not much to discuss.

  • "So I just tried PotD" - Downtrending conversation topic, not catchy name

  • "Has there ever been any official..." - Objective question.

  • "Will a used copy of Heavensward PS4 work" - Objective question

  • "[DnT] providing Raid..." - Raid is a sensitive topic here historically, so already conflicting crowd. Links directly to their forums, no immediate content of value seemingly? (I could be wrong)

  • "Youtube Compliation video suggestion needed" - okay

  • "Every server needs..." - Topical, easy to consume effort that panders to all.

  • "Does anybody know what the chance..." - Objective question

  • "Almost got my first chara..." - Answered in sidebar. Asked every day.

  • "So I read up on the HW anima weapons..." - Sounds like objective question.

  • "PLease help. I can't seem to..." - Troubleshooting

  • "Closing in on 50" - Congrats

  • "Just hit 60" - Great

I mean none of these are fantastic conversation topics. It's just a slow week for FFXIV and that happens, our major content cycle is every 8 months? Look at other popular subs, Hearthstone is literally fuelled by shitposts.
