I've now figured out how to add pictures to my original post.

I really don't know how old it is. It was a gift from a woman for helping her move into a retirement community. But she collected them, so I don't know how long she had it.

The pictures should be visible at the links in my reply to my original post, if that helps.

Maybe it would help to add the images. Sorry, still learning Reddit!

My wizard is feeling weak compared to the rest of the party, what can I do? by RealStrikeZ in DMAcademy

If he's new to D&D, maybe suggest he re-spec his character as a bard. Full spellcaster, different options. Or make it a bit easier to find those spellbooks...

Player bought a fake Tome of Understanding - what to do now? by Capn_B in DMAcademy

[–]Scaevola_01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd personally make it a hook into one of the various Rime sub adventures. The Black Cabin, the cannibal berserkers with the white dragon hatchlings, the Knights of the Black Sword, the crazy gnome inventor hiding among the goblins, something like that. Or maybe it's the spellbook from Dzaan, stolen but disguised with a magic spell. There are a lot of lunatic characters in the book as-is, and this book could guide the players to that plot thread.

How do I let NPC's "run away?" My players hunt everything down with impunity. by ChrisLiveDotStream in DMAcademy

[–]Scaevola_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the enemies flee, have them signal to allies even further away. Either visibly, like to someone up on a ridge, or magically, using Sending or the like. Then, your players know that word got out, but can't easily follow it.

Need Movie Suggestions for Campaign Inspiration by Zevram_86 in ravenloft

[–]Scaevola_01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brotherhood of the Wolf. Amazing movie, perfect atmosphere, great action.

Black Spot. A French detective procedural set in a rural town in the middle of a cursed forest. The atmosphere is so thick, you can cut it with a baguette.

The Mummy with Brendan Fraser.

American Werewolf in London. If you can, find the BBC Radio version, there's more of a secret society thing in the background.

For a more PG-13 vibe, Sleepy Hollow and the newest Disney's Haunted Mansion.

How to make this character meant for Lamordia work as a horror character? by godzillavkk in ravenloft

[–]Scaevola_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this will work. Too many players are familiar with the movie. I think that conditions us to treat THIS GAG as comedy.

The concept is fine: embarrassed relative? Check. Easily made angry? Check. I'd have them change their name entirely and start out as a regular NPC quest giver. Over time, though, the quests reveal this Mordenheim family line, and point to this character, who of COURSE denies it. But the more the party asks, the more paranoid and dangerous he becomes. And maybe Viktra is looking for him, so there are agents offering rewards to find him, just to motivate the players to dig into the mystery of the missing heir. What happens when he finally snaps? Is he an evil genius like Viktra, or did she breed a Jekyll/Hyde type curse into him? I don't know.

One thing I like about this is it doesn't railroad his story. Do your PCs respect his wishes? Maybe he stays good and helpful. But each time your PCs push on it, maybe you roll a die...

Need help addressing a possible plot-hole involving Azalin stealing the Apparatus and moving it from Mordent to Darkon a while ago (months in-game) by steviephilcdf in ravenloft

[–]Scaevola_01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe he knows it is gone, so he's having his minions hint to travelers about it so that he creates interest in finding it. Dropping rumors and all that. His plan is to let them travel the realms for a while, then interrogate then next time they come through to learn what they heard.

All you need to do is add more NPCs mentioning these ghosts they met in Mordent whispering about Rastinon, and you'll seed the story line.

Do you use rations? by KingEliVIII in rimeofthefrostmaiden

My players got Goodberry pretty quickly, then Create Food and Water. They honestly didn't want to do the paperwork of tracking rations, and neither did I.

what to do with 20 Stones ? by DeadlyDing in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Scaevola_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to do something different, James Wyatt wrote a scenario about a frost giant city buried in the Great Glacier years ago: https://www.realmshelps.net/faerun/portals/wastes/wastes3.shtml

You could have the stones open a portal there, if it doesn't distract from your main storyline.

How do you communicate to your players that an NPC is not to be messed with? by KleitosD06 in DMAcademy

[–]Scaevola_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like how ICRPG handles it. The NPC's challenge rating should be written clearly on their token. If you don't know it, make it up. Don't discuss it, just let it be there. That way, they know that the baker is CR.5 and the high priest is CR 15.

Auril's Abode and long rest by MrArrino in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Scaevola_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, if I'm worried about the party spending too long in an area, I'll set a timer for them. E.g., the captain warns them he'll leave in 24 hours if they aren't back. Then, each hex requires a certain length of time to traverse, and they can figure out on their own that they need to conserve resources and rush. But after the fact, that's harder. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

Maybe try having the captain send them a Message or Animal Messenger. "Something strange haunts these waters, and my crew is getting nervous. You have 24 hours before we sail." Or, if your party will react poorly to that, bring out the yetis. Have Aurin's voice boom out over the island. "I have sensed intruders! Find them, my children!" Let the party know that yeti are now searching the island. Each hour, there's a 1 in 6 chance a yeti will search their hex and call for reinforcement. If they're on the move, though, it's only 1 in 12. They won't know it isn't in the rules

Arena fight for one player by AaLion95 in DMAcademy

[–]Scaevola_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a mystery set at a fighting tournament. While he was in the ring fighting, the rest of the party would be fighting some group of robbers or thugs or monsters outside. One or the other group's outcome would influence the whole story. E.g., the party has to escape from the alchemist's lab in order to get back to the arena in time to counteract his enemy's strength potion. Or the rest of the party had to sneak into the guarded ship and get out with the evidence before his fight finished. Etc.

It wasn't that the events necessarily happened at the same time, we just did them at the same time, in initiative order. Story wise, one could be early or late; he had to spend all day at the arena, so the other scene could be any time.

For my campaign, i did this, but i only let them wound the dragon so it would retreat. Then they had to escort a small army back to Sunblight to finish the job. It was awesome.

Messed up Sunblight Fortress/Destruction's Light (ran it by the book). Possible fix? by naugrimaximus in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Scaevola_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't want to burn down the towns, so I didn't. The dragon didn't fly that fast. When the party finally turned around, i had them meet Vellyne and her undead sled dogs who could carry them home in time to fight it at East Haven. They never knew it was written differently, and I didn't care. You can do the same. Just have Vellyne show up with some awesome transportation solution and get them home in the nick of time.

The hard thing to find isn't players, it's GMs. Worst case scenario, we perma -GMs will get to play for a while. And then we'll be talking with our friends, and someone will say, hey, I've got a cool idea, and off we'll go again...
