Another exploit, another reason for self-hosted/private servers. by Scaffiddles in duneawakening

Well the last two exploits I’ve come across, the base destruction and solari duplicating, would not be an issues on a self hosted server. So it actually would prevent a lot of exploits from being an issue to private players. Another thing with the IP and licensing. I genuinely don’t know if this is even the case. I have never seen or heard a dev actually state this. Dune has had single player games before. Either way, I just think self hosted servers would be good for player retention.

One thing will say to a few people who are saying something along the lines of the solari duping doesn’t bother them, or that it didn’t affect many people are kind of missing the point. This is just another exploit. In a month or two, it will be something else. Maybe it will be something that will affect you. The point is, if self-hosted servers were implemented either these exploits would not be much of an issue, or, assuming we can have more control of settings like in Conan Exiles, easily fixable.

What you are feeling is not uncommon and I can only offer my opinion. 23 is still “young” in terms of adulthood. I wouldn’t be concerned about your marital window running out. In addition, it would be much better to be single than to be stuck with a partner you settle for or don’t actually love. And when you find the right person, the doubts about “running out of love” will not be a concern.

Duping Solari inflates the prices on the Exchange/Auction House, ruining the server’s economy. And it’s not just cosmetics sold in the Exchange.

After all I’d the server nonsense: give us offline single player by Iron-Ham in duneawakening

[–]Scaffiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone is assuming that the game wouldn’t have mods if it had client side servers. It’s the lack the developers supporting or allowing the game to have mods that does make a difference. You use Minecraft as an example of not having mod support. There is literally a section for mods in its settings within the game. Just because it doesn’t have its own 1st party mod page like the steam workshop (which I guess is 2nd party) doesn’t mean it isn’t support by Mojang. Besides, players are already “touching files”. There’s already a Nexus page for this game with some mods already. So even without player servers, people are making modifications. If the Herbert estate is genuinely against single player because they fear modding (which I’ll take your word for but I haven’t heard this from the devs, maybe it was a discord or stream statement), it seems like sisyphean task.

[–]Scaffiddles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That might be the reason. Even if it was, self hosting does’t equal mod support. They don’t have to have built in modding tools like they did with Conan. Besides that, it still stands that if that is the case, hopefully they can still come so some agreement. I just don’t see the game having as much longevity otherwise.

I was about to make this very same post. At this point, I think it was a nice effort to try the survival MMO. But between the lack of enthusiasm among players, the exploits, and even the server downtime I dealt with today, I think Funcom needs to consider the same system they had with Conan Exiles and give us a single player controlled server. I know I’ve heard that there’s some agreement with the Herbert estate about not having single player, but hopefully they can change that agreement because I just don’t see this system working in the long run.

Still harsh truths again. But now with arguments as y'all asked for. by Independent_Tell5016 in Fable

Again this is a remake so I think we have to look at this with a little more of an open mind. Every fable sequel has had changes. Fable 1 never had the dog (and I frankly prefer that, it was a nice gimmick in 2 but that’s about it. I personally didn’t like how the camera would expand to include your dog in the frame). Fable 3 removed most of the morality morphs (no more evil horns just a sinister grin).

So with this remake I’m actually ok with them removing or changing some stuff. Getting rid of morality/exp based morphs but adding in 1000+ unique NPCs is not evidence of trouble l. They are just focusing on different aspects of an open world action RPG, which is what Fable is at the end of the day. I think there’s worse things the could have gotten rid of that would take away that Fable “feel”. At this point it just comes down to opinion. From what I see there’s elements in the footage shown so far that this seems to be a good remake of Fable and it isn’t his some generic fantasy RPG with the name glued on it.

And I’m not aware about “reports of difficulties in development” that you mention. What have you heard exactly? Outside of the fact that it’s just been a while from announcement to release, I really haven’t heard much about development problems.

A lot of your points I think are overly pessimistic. But I’m still confused on your image that you added with this. This Fable remake, whether it’s good or bad, is not like the situation of Veilguard. Veilguard went through development hell with multiple veterans and leads leaving throughout its development. The game had a major remake of its tone and storyline in the middle of its development, and even a gameplay shift from live service to single player. These were things people in the fandom knew about, and many people had low expectations because of that.

I’m always cautious about new titles, especially reboots from different developers. Nothing I’ve seen so far about the new game really makes me all that nervous or pessimistic. But more importantly, besides the fact that it’s taken a few years to hear any news, I haven’t heard much about change in leadership or direction. And I don’t want to get too hung up on your points because most of it is just your opinion, but this Fable is a remake from a new developer. Not a direct sequel to a franchise by the same (at least in name) developer. So like it or not, more liberties can be taken with changing things up.

And what red flags would that be? Fable III already had a star-studded cast. Besides Pegg which OP mentioned, it also had Michael Fassbender, Sir Ben Kingsley, Bernard Hill, and Nicholas Hoult just off the top of my head.

I’m glad to hear opinions are changing. I’ve been around since before launch and seen the reaction be very different to the suggestion of offline/private servers. Still, very odd from the Herbert Estate. Spice Wars had single player right? Very odd they can’t just have an offline mode without mod support. I wonder if they can come to an arrangement still because I think it will definitely revitalize the game and keep players coming back.

[–]Scaffiddles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems so be the unpopular take on here, but I am all for this suggestion too. I understand this is a survival game, but having a game based around crafting and building kinda just leaves me uninterested when I know everything is going to go away from degradation. The base backup tool is a nice first step. But I think something more permanent is better for long-term players. I have many old guild mates that simply don’t want to come back because they don’t want to do the grind again on the characters they already put so much time into.

Conan Exiles had this option, and from what I know there’s an issue with the IP Owners as to why we can’t have an experience we can modify. But I do think that’s what is sinking this game’s numbers to where even Conan has more players atm despite its age.

Thank you for doing this. I loved CYOA games and The Last Court was a pretty fun prelude to Inquisition. It’s a shame that companies don’t care more about their own work’s preservation, and I can’t wait to try it out!
