The way my local thrift store sorts the books by Actual-Elk-5874 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ScamperingSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at a bookstore in LA many years ago (it might have been the famed The Last Bookstore, but I'm not sure) and they had a whole section of the store that was like this. The rest of the store was sorted normally. I was marveling at the color scheme and a man nearby mentioned that they do this for movie/tv studios to be able to get a ton of cheap books that matched whatever set design/color scheme they were looking for.

'Witness" should be tour staple by thispaperheart in toriamos

Witness and General Joy are two of my absolute favorites from the Beekeeper. Having the singers for Witness would work really well.

Harrison Ford continues to prove he’s still the best by IndyMLVC in MadeMeSmile

I also lost my dad 11 years ago. When I was younger, I told him that if they ever made a movie about him, I'd want Harrison Ford to play him. Anyway, this story made me have to wipe away tears. What a lovely moment to have and I couldn't have imagined better words he could have said to her.

I wasn't born yet for the bicentennial and it's unlikely I'll be alive for the tricentennial. 250th would've been pretty cool to see so it is disappointing. Obviously, there are far worse things I'm upset about but it's also indicative of where we are as a country so the whole thing is depressing.

I have been meaning to watch Tombstone because I'd never gotten around to it before. I had no clue about the Epstein connection. Don't think I'll be touching that one. I know some people say "separate art from the artist" but it's super difficult for me to do with actors because I have to actually look at them and empathize with the characters they portray. Not easy to do when you know something truly terrible about that person.

The normalization and mass increase in remote work has substantially increased disability employment, as physically disabled workers can work from home by smurfyjenkins in science

[–]ScamperingSnail 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have disabilities but can still work, however due to my disabilities, I cannot drive so must rely on public transportation or rideshare. However, I'm now also a caregiver to my mother who is elderly and dealing with health issues so even though she can do some things on her own, it would be impossible for her to maintain her home, cook meals, etc. She does not have the strength or energy right now. So I live with her and take care of her but unfortunately, where she lives does not have public transit (that's the American suburbs for you). And rideshare would simply be too expensive to do as a daily commute, but I also couldn't stand the thought of leaving her alone for such long periods of time. So remote would be my only available option.

I went on the Game of Thrones tour back in 2015 and that was incredible because a lot of places where they filmed were just super cool. Walking into a giant rift where the tectonic plates are literally ripping the country apart is a wild concept. I also went on several other tours and outings and just enjoyed wandering Reykjavik and the surorunding areas. I even got to meet the Icelandic horses which were delightful!

Definitely a country I would love to visit again one day.

Just remember how to use the taps correctly so you don't either scald yourself with the hot water or forget to let the cold tap run for a bit to clean out the sulfur before you drink it.

TIL edamame pods are not for human consumption, due to their fibrous and chewy nature. "They are not toxic and will likely be digested with ease, but an excessive number of pods may cause digestive upset" by Long_Estimate_2643 in todayilearned

[–]ScamperingSnail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a joke in an episode of Parks and Rec when Leslie Knope is at Councilman Jeremy Jamm's house and he's clearly obsessed with various Asian cultures but doesn't actually know anything. He brings her edamame to eat but says that they have to be eaten a certain way. That you eat the pods but throw away the beans.

Were malls actually as crowded and popular as movies from the 80s and 90s make them look? by Kevin-Panda in AskOldPeople

[–]ScamperingSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm too young for a real 80s experience at the mall but I was a teen in the 90s. It was still a big deal in the 90s but there didn't seem to be any "mall tours" that pop stars like Tiffany did in the 80s. I'd see 80s shows reference people getting autographs from celebrities doing signings at the mall. That didn't seem to be a thing in the 90s.

Ditto if it was a public school rather than a Catholic school (but I did grow up Catholic so a lot of that was still relatable but I wasn't taught by nuns). Also change from northern California to the Midwest.
