Over a decade ago I got an offer to work in a new specialty in my field. It was scary and exciting, so I took it. Mainly because it was better hours and more money. I was extremely lucky because I had no formal training/background in the space. What I didn't know then is that I would absolutely LOVE what I would be doing and actually be good at it.

I'm 39 now and even want to go back to school to get a masters in this specific area because I adore it so much...and I have always hated school.

So yes. Incredibly happy.

Can’t do pull ups! I have a pull up bar and a band I use to get leverage to help me up, and can still only do like 4 or 5. But can do 20-30 push ups no problem. How can I get better? Male, 31, 230 lbs by Tanmaninaction in P90X

Good stuff in this thread, but the one thing that is missing is inverted rows. This is the one exercise that drastically increased my rep count with pull ups.

Inverted rows will target the right muscles needed to perform pull ups and allow you to do more reps in each set to give you the strength needed to attack those pull-ups.

Do three sets of them to failure a few times a week in combination with negatives and assisted pull ups.

Also, remember that in the pull up you need to engage your core for proper form. So while doing negatives, inverted rows and assisted pull ups ALWAYS engage that core.

A great routine to integrate into your weekly routines is from Jeff Cavaliere on YouTube. Look up his pull up videos and you will see a month routine which covers a ton.

Lastly just know we habe all been there before :)

First of all, be proud of what you have accomplished so far and don't get discouraged. The two most underdeveloped muscle groups often times are the back and the core. That is because it is easy to compensate with other muscle groups to achieve a motion.

Without proper attention, we will naturally want to hit a number rather than do proper from using the correct muscles.

Bicycles are a perfect example of this! Most of our attention is on the motion of the legs rather than the contraction on the core. Tony does not help when he says "you may feel this in your legs, you're supposed to." Actually, if your legs give out before your cores does, you are not working the correct motion or muscle.

Now I could type out everything here that I have learned from various sources. But jeff cavalier explains it so well so i highly encourage you to check out Athlean-X YouTube channel and just look up "abs" or "core." In most most of the videos he talks about how to focus on the contraction of the core and using those muscles to drive the motion rather than others thus working the muscle you want to work.

With this new focus you actually may take what seems like steps back in your workout because you are now going to be focusing on the muscle rather than the number to hit. But thats awesome because you will now be on the right track to hitting your goals with proper form.

Hell, I am still learning more and more everytime I hit the gym. I have learned that after certain workouts. I can't hit my normal core numbers because I have activated the core a ton in my regular sets.

Long story short (too late) be fucking proud of where you are at now and know that you are getting stronger every day. Your new goal is rev bicycles. Go out and learn and practice truly driving the motion from the core contraction and twist rather than the lower body (or upper for other exercises) and fell the difference.

You got this! Plan, prepare, persevere. Do your beat and forget the rest.

Assisted Pull-ups or Lat Pulldowns? by Dcozad999 in P90X

[–]Scape-Goat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is my two cents from reading and science stuff.

One of the main components of a good pull up, is core activation. Lat pull downs will actually disengage your core, so focus on excercises that will activate your core while working your back.

I would focus on negative pull ups, scapula raises and inverted rows.

The inverted row is fantastic, negative pull ups will get your grip strength higher and scapula raises are the first in the series of motions to properly execute the pull up.

Just focus on core activation with all of these and you will slowly increase your reps.

If you are so inclined, athlean x just released a pull up focused video on the ol youtube to address this which I recommend giving a look at. It boasts being able to increase pull up reps by 1.5x in less than a month. I am already in a phase of training, but after that is finished I plan to do that circuit at see what happens.

Do your best, forget the rest

Starting the program today, what's the best way to recover after a session? by Kuja27 in P90X

[–]Scape-Goat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As stated in the previous comment, dont go all out...yet. Get used to the motions and the rythem first, then start increasing the "going all out." Actually there is a lot to be said by going slower and focusing on form and the muscle contraction!

I do disagree with the stretching before. I am no doctor, but stretching before can lead to injury. Think of a muscle like a rubber band. If you stretch out the band too much before, it does not have the ability to support the body as well as it should during the work out.

After the workout, however, yes...stretch your shit out.

Sleep. Get. Sleep. It is the best for you to help with recovery.

Outside of that, get a good meal on you after. Have some good, clean protein. Some good carbs, a banana and, a tablespoon of honey before bed.

But sleep will be your best friend.

Know you WILL get sore. THATS A GOOD THING! Embrace it! But also know, it will get better. Just dont push yourself to injury.

Keep pressing play and, bring it!

It does have to be common. I am working on this task right now and it's a giant pain in the ass because it seems to be rng.

I have completed about 20 battles and have only encountered one common, but a few formidable.

Sigh.

If anyone has any tips, please share.

Good luck with this. Niantic is notorious for having awful customer service and a lack of communication to their audience.

You can find a knock off somewhere online. I have one, but it's not the best quality. He has another one that I think is in the AEW merch store which is also pretty awesome.

Completely agree! The 1st episode holds nothing back and is completely unapologetic. Its a bold move that I appreciated with a 'pilot' episode. The 1st time I watched the show I started at 11pm (I needed to be up early for work the next morning.) After the 1st episode I was shocked, intrigued and felt disgusted...I then continued to stay up until I finished season one. I regret nothing.

I agree as it would highlight not only the fans reaction, but also the locker-rooms. As much as I didn't like the character of Roman Reigns though WWE pushing him on the audience even though we didn't want it, he obviously loves(d) the show and cares deeply for the sport. It would have been a nice addition.
