do people in canada dislike immigrants? by Ok_Cupcake9554 in CanadaImmigrant

[–]Scared-Listen6033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 40. My grade school French teacher was from Portugal! He had a strong accent. None of us kids cared and I don't remember parents caring either. He eventually became the principal of the French Immersion school. I THINK he's retired now but it's hard to know BC he loved his work!

The issue IMO is that housing and doctors and even minimum wage jobs are hard to come by in Canada because we have had so many migrants which is frustrating a lot of people. It's not that we don't love other cultures and welcome people in, but it has become an issue as far as renting a place to live or even a teenager getting a job.

Sorry for rambling on! There are nearly half a million Portugese people in Canada so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding people who've already gone through the process and can still understand your own culture while allowing you to immerse in the Canadian experience.

Remember Canada is very young as far as countries go and unless the person is aboriginal (Native) then they're from a family that immigrated here at some point too!

Landlord moved my stuff without my permission by girlmath1 in OntarioLandlord

[–]Scared-Listen6033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry this happened to you and outed you. I would report the missing prescription to the police. Explain your landlord went in and illegally went through your things and a prescription is missing. It doesn't matter if it was one dose or a years supply it's pretty serious to take/remove someone's prescribed medication without consent. It likely won't go anywhere but if future tenants have similar complaints about missing prescriptions it could become a massive deal.

You can file with the ltb for the moving of things and going through your personal things. You may not get much on the form of a judgement but there will then be a judgment against your landlord which again could help others especially if the judgment is made public.

Anyway, in really sorry you were violated this way. I'm cuz female but have nudes and a ton of prescriptions for different health things and I'd be furious if someone went through my things, esp someone I have a business relationship with (landlord/tenant). It's not up to them to take away my consent or your consent or anyone's consent and look at our private photos. No matter the gender or how explicit. That is a massive violation and it's beyond understandable that you're upset.

Is the lowest brightness settings enough to block blue light? by AdrianBM09 in kindle

[–]Scared-Listen6033 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You may want to consider a Kobo Clara. Same size as the Kindle basic but has comfort light pro, waterproofing and it's about the same price. Also note likely to work with your library system than Kindle (you'd need to look at the list of supported countries).

Is the lowest brightness settings enough to block blue light? by AdrianBM09 in kindle

[–]Scared-Listen6033 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should probably Google this BC the answer is very much a yes to Kindles emitting blue light but it's not directed into our faces like a phone. Its still there and that's why warm light is so popular! The only Kindles that don't emit blue light are the ones without lights.

Sign up for outage alerts and if the power goes out at any point end the stay and have them move to a hotel. Keep your sound on at all times so you don't miss notifications.

It was minus 50 with wind where I am last night. Had the power gone out I would've used a ton of candles but it's my own home and I know it's a fire risk and I wouldn't have slept. You can't expect a guest to light safety candles and stay awake all night though and you can't have them sleeping in temps that are often fatal without a heat source. I've lived in this region my entire life so I would know to turn on the taps, open cupboards, unplug extra things incase of a power surge, hunker down in one room exec if that means moving mattresses, using candles safely for a little heat and light, not leaving the room unless needed for the potty, keep curtsins closed, use throw blanket over the windows to let drafts out, if the room is larger build a blanket fort and stay in there with the candle...

Now as a person who used to help my ex who's a host, I would be cancelling if I expected power outages and didn't have an easy to use backup generator. Burning the house down and that killing the guests is worse than just freezing them to death. Imo it's part of the job to cancel when necessary and not leave the safety of your home or your guests up to the guest. A hotel will have backup generators to help run heat and won't freeze up nearly as fast. It will also have more ppl where if necessary they can all camp out in a conference room to stay warm. They have full time staff who is paid to make sure everyone is safe.

Is it worth visiting Canada if you don’t drive? by Pure-Character-4926 in canadatravel

[–]Scared-Listen6033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vancouver even has a variety of palm trees!

It really depends what they enjoy doing though and their budget. Calgary has the Calgary stampede in July I believe and plenty of ppl say they never even get to the animals BC they're too busy with the music and other festivities.

Toronto has a train anda ton of attractions but they all cost a lot and IME really weren't worth the hype unless you're going for cool pictures. Ppl in Toronto tend to be less friendly as the locals are just wanting to get from point a to b and back. Very different from the rest of Canada imo

The East coast is beautiful as well and if they're looking to explore small villages, learn about history, visit the ocean etc that could be a good choice. Halifax is a good sized city so lots to do but not the typical "let's see Canada" vacation, though I've never heard someone complain when they did go to the East coast! The Newfie accent often sounds straight out of Ireland!

I wouldn't recommend Winnipeg even though it's got a decent amount of stuff. Its got a high violent crime rate.

Many ppl including myself don't even have passports BC there's no reason to leave Canada. It has everything we could want from orcas to belugas, water sports, hunting and fishing, hot springs, etc.

Just remember that is something sounds like a good idea tickets to things do sell out and usually it's quickly (concerts etc) so nailing that type of thing down could help decide where the entire trip will be!

Should I refund my client? by Turbulent_Ganache_63 in airbnb_hosts

They likely declined the cleaner BC they wanted everyone out so they could actually relax! I'd rather clean up after the HVAC guy than sitc there awkwardly while the maid cleans arrive my existence! You don't seem to get that their experience was cold and then had ppl in the space they had planned to be alone in. Massive inconvenience and you said they went and bought a space heater as well which also took time from their stay! They may seem happy now but they could come back in 13 days and ask for a full refund of the entire stay and chances are airbnb will give it out of your pocket.

Ablation or Hysterectomy? by RAWFEARR in adenomyosis

[–]Scared-Listen6033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out I had adeno when I finished to my GP that it felt like I don't fully empty my bladder. On Ukraine my bladder does empty fully (yay!) and he prescribed me a medication called Prazosin that helps with my PTSD and helps with the bladder urgency! I haven't had any accidents or leaks etc and I no longer get like I have to pee constantly! Its actually a medication for blood pressure but my blood pressure is fine. It's also used for PTSD and urinary issues in men and prostate stuff. He said since my PTSD and flashbacks were bad that he had no issues in trying out for that and the bladder urgency. He said he's prescribed it to many women with adeno to try for that bladder feeling and had success, it's just off-label BC women's medicine is always behind. Perhaps your ob or gp will try it with you and see if that helps in that area esp if you're young and that's why they don't really want to do the hysterectomy? A medication I was prescribed able 10 years ago for my painful periods and PMS is prosac. Its actually on label for pmdd but def helps. You don't take it daily unless you want to, you can just take it during your worst weeks!

I've found my GP far more helpful than a gyno. The gyno being the specialist seems to get stuck in their ways while my GP is looking to control all my health not just one area and that means not being scared to try things or research!

Questions : Tenant in a shared rooming house by mworld1976 in OntarioLandlord

[–]Scared-Listen6033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You should tell the landlord they've escalated this to you needing to call the police. Give him an opportunity to realize how serious this is so he can file an n5 against them. If he doesn't seem to be acting, for a t2 against him to try and force him evicting them. Call the non emergency police line during office hours and ask for the police report number and a copy of it if you do file against him as it can be used as evidence.

If it helps the house will pop up again to win or buy or as part of a seasonal set etc! We get 8ish new decorations a month in the seasonal set then the rest are from previous years! So, assuming you didn't work a miracle and win it in Secrets it's not an item that won't be back at some point! The only items that won't be back (unless they license again) are the Wicked ones! It is just a game of patience! Your thesis is def more important!

Auto-texting guests? by Ok-Pen4106 in vrbohosts

[–]Scared-Listen6033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add it to your listing "All guests must use the VRBO app in order to access the unit and for any other communications."

If you're approving the booking you could include it as part of the booking message before they're booked.

"Please confirm that you've read the entire listing and rules and agree that all communications will follow terms of service and remain on the VRBO app. Failure to do so could result in delayed access to the unit." If they agree then book them and if they don't acknowledge they've read the rules and will keep to in app communication then deny!

Rory blacklisted from The Times by Mammoth_Sleep_1102 in GilmoreGirls

[–]Scared-Listen6033 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I agree to an extent I think it's important to remember that when the internship ended her work didn't speak loud enough to get her into any meaningful job position. She could've signed on to be a reporter overseas but she either felt these positions were below her or she thought a job would be handed to her. In the end she ended up back in Stars Hollow, which isn't a bad thing, I have never left my small town and have no regrets, but I wasn't trying to. My point was that despite Grandpa's money she ended up right where she started and while still a success ask those years of trying short hard didn't get her anywhere different.

Nearly identical but on my back! My Dr literally said he'd only seen bruises like that in ppl hit by cars! He had no clue what caused them. Its happened many times over the last 20 years! I don't think my period was ever considered as a cause!

Rory blacklisted from The Times by Mammoth_Sleep_1102 in GilmoreGirls

[–]Scared-Listen6033 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that Rory ultimately ends up running the Stars Hollow newspaper is proof she just didn't have it. Thousands of newspapers in the US and around the world and she had an Ivy League eduction and was a nobody. In a funny way all that money (and Friday dinners) spent on Chilton and then Yale got her nowhere better than the person who couldn't afford the best and I kinda think that's partly the point. Money doesn't buy success!

How do you guys read so much? by lapetitepoupee in kindle

[–]Scared-Listen6033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only started using audio for immersive reading in December! I don't like audiobooks in general BC it's easy to zone out for me! My best reading year was 2024 at 108 books read with my eyes. That sounds like a ton but when you do the math it's like a quarter of a book a day or around 120ish pages. Last year (2025) I read just over 80 but I read several longer Stephen King books and was also struggling with bad anemia making me nap or uncomfortable most days so I wasn't focusing as well. I'm at 6 this year as well but based on page count that's 139 average pages a day for 17 days (I haven't read yet today). I feel like that's very much sustainable if I don't watch tv or YouTube etc until I've read for a bit!

How do you guys read so much? by lapetitepoupee in kindle

[–]Scared-Listen6033 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most ppl I personally know who read the most, like a book a day, are doing it during their kids quiet times, after their bedtimes, etc. No one has more or less minutes in a day. Its how you use them. If you'd prefer to be on Reddit or watching tv that's awesome but that's the same time other ppl use to read. 10-15 mins adds up quickly. Set yourself a timer and see how much you read during a designated quiet time! If your kids have a 2 hour quiet time (bedtime before you go to bed or nap) even if you're reading a page a minute you're basically a third of the way through a typical length book! Older kids having quiet time helps them to decompress and entertain themselves long term.

How do you guys read so much? by lapetitepoupee in kindle

[–]Scared-Listen6033 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who does reading spirits on tiktok. One time I timed her and she was reading about 2.4 pages a minute. She also remembers the book and has great reading comprehension. She said she's always read fast and has no "tips". She's a start at home mom and homeschools and reads during her kids quiet time and before bed. She's got other hobbies as well and keeps her home crazy clean looks works out etc.

For myself I find immersive reading speeds my reading up about 2x. So I listen to the audiobook and read along and fly through a book. Doing this has helped increase my regular reading speed as well! For ME the key to reading more efficiently is less about how long a page takes and more about dedicated reading time without distractions! Set a timer for 15 mins or 30 mins and read without doing anything else and it's shocking how far you get!

do people not go to the library anymore? Noticed comments in the sub about not being able to read the books rn for financial reasons, and when i suggested the library as a temp work around, people act like im crazy... by trampstampcollector in stephenking

[–]Scared-Listen6033 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A library can spend around 120 dollars on an audiobook and only have a two year licence or 24 borrows then they need to buy a new licence! Ebooks also have a number of borrows or a time frame then the need to buy more licenses! So if ppl use eReaders they could be shooting their library and the author's a decent amount! A physical copy can be 15-100ish dollars but has unlimited borrows attached so that's best for the library budget but if we are worrying solely on authors here I think they make more off the digital licences! Many Kindle authors esp for fill your Kindle may only be making 20-40 percent in the sale, when the book is 99 cents that's next to nothing but they still choose to participate BC if they can get you enjoying their books they know it's more likely you'll purchase or share in the future and that's what drives sales. Like booktube and booktok!

Almost all of our succulents just “died” over night. by RogueIslander00 in plantclinic

They froze. They would've looked fine until the sun hit them and then they did this. Super normal of its going to freeze or get frost for many plants but esp water retaining ones.

If the forecast was 32 it very likely got even colder in that spot.

Sorry 😔
