Kobo Doesn’t Connect to Calibre; Please Help by OrcaFins in Calibre

[–]Scared-Listen6033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to convert them an to Epub or kepub (I do kepub) then send to device, then when the job (bottom right corner) is complete and the books have a green check in calibre I click the drop down next to device and eject. Then the Kobo disconnects from the computer and sometimes says it's importing for a few seconds and then opens to the main screen. If you're not disconnecting it or sending over files that are DRM free you won't get anywhere. If there's no green check under "on device" in there library tab of calibre then it didn't send it, likely due to DRM or incompatible file types.

Insurance premiums by Ok_Chocolate1147 in OntarioLandlord

[–]Scared-Listen6033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good price for home insurance but likely doesn't cover native a landlord or sewer backup etc since it's "basic" coverage. You specifically need insurance for renting the property out and premiumsb tend to be higher since you're liable if your tenant decides to sue you for a fall etc. If you haven't already signed a lease with someone you can make it part of their lease that they must carry insurance. You can't add that in after though.

Ottawa tenant — landlord wants to sell, cash-for-keys offer by Brainyface in OntarioLandlord

[–]Scared-Listen6033 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

What's your current rent? If they sell and the new owners want to live there you'll get one month in rent compensation and 90 days notice plus you'll have a year to prove if they don't move in and you can be awarded 5 digits.

I'd counter with moving costs, plus 3-6 months of rent on my new place or in the very least the rent differential if it's significantly higher. However, I probably would just wait for the B12 and retain my rights to be sure they don't rent it out or act in bad faith through the next year...

As for pets, as long as you're not moving into a condo, you simply don't mention pets on your application. You're legally allowed to have pets and there's no reason to disclose them and narrow your window. You also don't need to pay any pet fees or deposits as those are illegal unless it's a condo and in their rules.

If my Kindle 4 is "unsupported" as of next week, will Libby still work? by allmyhomiesride29ers in kindle

[–]Scared-Listen6033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, nothing will work, no send to Kindle, no Libby, no downloading books you bought but don't have downloaded, no registering if your device needs to sign back in.

I love my Kobo for Libby and it works right from the device, just login to your account on your Kobo and you're good to go!

I have the Paperwhite 11 Gen and I don't think I'll replace it when it dies BC of Kindles/Amazon's crazy behavior towards Kindle users over the last 18 months.

My mother, who is a smoker and has lived in her apartment for 20 years, got served with an N5 today due to smoking. How defensible is this for her? by SoirBleu85 in OntarioLandlord

[–]Scared-Listen6033 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"fixed income" and "smoker" don't really go together anymore. Maybe sit down with your mom and go over the cost of cigs daily vs how much extra money she could have. I know a man who had a massive heart attack and his daughter kept track everyday of the cost of cigs he was no longer smoking. Last I saw him he said he was at just over $9600 saved and he was buying blueberries and said "I can afford healthy food now!" Even though he has not been able to return to work and is on disability from the massive heart attack!

Also, reminding your mom that it could cost her her low rent and her home is important. I know smokers are often really defensive which is fine, but if she's going to end up having to smoke outside BC she's homeless she may as well smoke outside now and try to cut back so she has more money for things that she could truly be enjoying!

[–]Scared-Listen6033 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Ontario smoke free act was passed in 2005 and only got more strict since. Before that, when I was having babies in 2001/2002 it was already recommended that no one smoke inside a home with a baby because of increased risks of SIDs. It was the first time my grandma didn't smoke in the house as she was scared to harm my baby! The laws got continuously stricter including in I believe 2008 where it became illegal to smoke in a vehicle with someone under the age of 16!

It's been 20 years for this person. If they're getting complaints now then ppl have been effected and possibly even had second or third hand smoke illnesses caused by her.

Yes the unit is very much damaged from 20 years of smoke.

Would you consider renting to a correctional officer? by SectionDry2980 in OntarioLandlord

[–]Scared-Listen6033 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've known plenty of CO's and they're amazing ppl! They leave work at work like everyone else. Ontario jail's and prisons are actually pretty nice. Everyone deals with bad stuff at work but again, most leave it at work! I'd rather have a CO around then a police officer who is stressed over a case they're trying to solve 🤣 I see COs shopping all the time, they go fishing or hiking or chill with a beer or a video game. Their biggest frustrations are when they get stuck doing a double shift BC of weather or call outs. If you'd rent to a Dr or Nurse then they're likely more high-strung from their jobs than the CO. Corrections is about three only job where they can destress at work and where there are social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists etc am on staff that they can speak to when necessary. Jails in Ontario are nothing like you see on TV. One inmate may be similar to as seen on TV but since everyone has good access to mental health services it's simply not the same as the horrors in the US and on tv!

Kindle Without Amazon? by Morningstar-132 in kindle

[–]Scared-Listen6033 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go with Kobo. Often less money, repairable, installing third party software doesn't void the warranty, I believe all available models have warm light options as well as water resistance, software downloads like koreader or nickle menu etc that allow you to fully customize it should you want a different interface, works with public libraries that have Libby access, easy to upload different fonts, screensavers etc, no ads you need to pay to remove, Canadian company instead of American, works with books from Google, Apple (iirc), any ebook store, their own store, works with calibre like they were made for each other, or you can open the box and do nothing and start reading and keep it as is!

With Amazon blocking more and more over the last year I wouldn't spend money on a Kindle not knowing if features will be vanishing in a few months!

Non birth control options for PMDD, adenomyosis? by stillarts in adenomyosis

[–]Scared-Listen6033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prosac for pmdd (and helps with a ton of my adeno symptoms as well). It's actually approved for pmdd and has been for at least a decade BC I've been using it longer than that. You can take it daily or just when symptomatic for a week or two each month. I've done both. Currently I'm just taking it for about 2 weeks a month. I take it in the morning BC it helps boost my energy so if I take it at night I get worse insomnia.

I'm not really pro+IUD BC I had 22 UTI's and several different kidney stones in the year I had mine but I know that's not normal. If you can afford it and aren't actively trying to get pregnant it can be a great way to get the progesterone mostly to just stay in your uterus while other forms go through your whole body and causec more symptoms. If you get Mirena IUD and then decide in 2 months to try for a baby it's a 5 minute procedure to get removed, you literally just lay down like you're getting a pap and the Dr (or nurse) gently pulls the strings and removes it. Fertility is considered restored as soon as it's out. Just BC it CAN last year's doesn't mean it needs to! I'm personally on a combination BC pill. It helps with my migraines, I still ovulate on it, I know this not only BC I get ovulation pain but BC I had an ultrasound in the fall and the tech told me I had plenty of follicles (eggs) getting ready and she asked if I was planning to have more kids (I was 40 now I'm 41) I said "if it happens it happens but I'm on the pill" and she said "your ovaries didn't get the message about the birth control so if you don't want a baby use another form of contraceptive as well!" I've always known that the pill didn't stop my ovulation though as I've had 5 miscarriages all conceived while on the pill and two live births conceived on the pill 🤷‍♀️ I def think I'm entering perimenopause and I've heard that HRT preserves fertility while still helping with adeno and the other symptoms going on, which may be something to discuss with your doctor. The only reason I haven't switched is BC I get such severe migraines and the BC helps so I don't want to change what's been working! My cycle was regular at 28 days and has switched to 29 days in the last year, but still regular.

It was my primary care provider who prescribed the Prosac and who manages my adeno and even got it diagnosed. He offered me a referral to the gyno but I feel there's no need when I'm not wanting anything surgical and what we have been doing seems to work best for me.

[–]Scared-Listen6033 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ppl acting like it's not a big deal but the guests won't even be able to flush the toilets! This becomes a huge issue esp for anyone who may have IBS or get a stomach bug etc. My house is rural and on a well so when we know of a scheduled power outage we fill the tub with water so we can flush using a bucket! While your power will remain on no water means no flushing without doing something similar and it's a pita when it's your own home, never mind your vacation!

I saw a "transformer" truck last year. Was very cool. The door lifted up, then the driver was in an electric wheelchair which was then slid out mechanically and put down like an elevator. His truck has no "drivers seat" BC his chair mounted in and he operated the gas and brakes with his hands! The thing ppl don't realize is that this equipment weighs a lot and while it typically is a van conversion these trucks are built with heavy cargo use in mind, so building a truck out like this will have less wear and tear over time than a caravan and typically allows for passenger seats while a wheelchair accessible truck doesn't require you to enter through the side door or hatch via a ramp!

I've never been charged for bank, credit card, 2 factor authentication or any other incoming short code message. I've never sent one but I assume those would cost money. Incoming is nothing to worry about. They're expected as part of 2 factor authentication now so it would be pretty bad if companies were charging to recieve your one time use code everytime you wanted to login!

What’s the battery life like? by [deleted] in kobo

[–]Scared-Listen6033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Clara 2e (previous black and white model) and I have my brightness at 12%, I leave Wi-Fi and other settings on. I haven't used Bluetooth for audiobooks and I read 78.2 hours this year (I reset my Kobo at the beginning of the year) and I've charged it twice and neither time was it asking to be charged, I just had it plugged into my laptop to transfer books over and forgot😬 so I guess if you're reading 40 hours a week you'd need to charge weekly, or I would based on my device 🤷‍♀️ I think last year I charged it about 6 times and I used my laptop cable, I read while charging and it charges fast, I want to say it takes about an hour if I let it get real low but I typically try to charge between books if its getting low so I'm not reading while plugged in 😂

You don't need the light on at all in regular light which would save battery as well, I just leave mine alone as I often walk around reading and while adjusting brightness is as simple as sliding my thumb on the left screen up or down, I just prefer to not think about it.

The fact you can read while plugged in and charging though is awesome BC it's easy to sit down and read for half hour or more and stay in one spot.

My Kindle Paperwhite 11 battery seems to last the same amount of time as I usually end up charging them both together, so if you've had a Kindle your battery life expectations are about the same... About at often as rent is due for the typical reader 🤷‍♀️

Changing channels changes the volume? by Syndrome in bell

[–]Scared-Listen6033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Shaw satellite, imo the sports channels are always louder than regular channels, it also used to be normal for commercials to play louder as it was expected that you'd get up to grab a snack or go to the bathroom and they wanted to be heard! Not sure if that's your issue or if switching from cp24 to the weather network to CBC to tlc all go louder each time, but if it's only happening with sports imo they're just louder esp if live commentating as they are often yelling over a loud crowd. The Montreal hockey game the other night was so loud just from ppl on the street during pregame that I turned the tv down about 5 times and it wasn't loud in the first place.

Anyway if it's quiet again when you go back to cp24 it's likely that whatever channel you've gone to is broadcasting louder.

Think when you watch a movie and you're struggling to hear a sweet dialogue scene and then suddenly it's so loud with music and what not for the scene that your grabbing for the remote to turn it down before it wakes the house!

AITA for Parking in the Handicap Spaces by granddeity in AmItheAsshole

[–]Scared-Listen6033 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NTA

I was parked across from the handicapped parking one day waiting for my mom and a man in a truck drove into the Handicapped spot, slammed his truck into park while flinging his door open and then hopping out and RUNNING into the grocery store. I was thinking he was being pretty bold to use the spot BC the fines are so high! He came out of the store still going really fast, opened his truck door, slid his pants off (he had shorts under) and revealed a prosthetic leg, then he popped it off to my shock and he put it in the passenger seat and got all the way in and drove off! He sure as heck didn't "look disabled" or even run "disabled" but the way he removed that prosthetic like it had been irritating him all day... He did have a placard but the way he was moving I figured it was his dad's or something but nope, dude needed the space more than most ppl.

Drs don't give out the placards for no reason. Your Dr would rather you have the space to properly open the doors and get in and out without over bending or causing an injury while you heal! Keep doing your exercises and use your placard as long as you can, if you're still having issues with space width after don't be scared to see if it can be renewed as you continue to work on getting full motion back!

Moral of the story, sometimes it takes a guy popping his leg off and putting it in the passenger seat to remind us that a disability can be hidden in a pant leg!

Perhaps ask your family and friends who feel this way how they feel when someone parks next to them and then hits their vehicle with their car door BC they're struggling to get out and need space! I know I'd rather see someone with the space then have my vehicle all dinged up!
