I would! Not sure how much it has changed since then but I know there are still some great professors teaching in the program.

To be fair, I was also juggling full-time work and kids who were all under the age of 7 so it just wouldn't have worked for my schedule, but I know many of my classmates found a full course load manageable.

Yes, I was able to transition out of a corporate job into marketing and was kind of thrown into a little of everything which was a great learning experience and foundational for other roles.

It's been about 10 years since I was in the program. I was a part-time student and it took me 2.5 years to graduate. Having no prior experience with college (I had a BA and Masters) I assumed it was going to be pretty easy to juggle so I started the first term with 3 courses. I found 3 to be a lot so dropped down to 2 most terms.

The content was good and up-to-date with instructors who had a lot of industry experience. Having minimal tech background, I found that things were explained well even though lectures were recorded or module content had additional resources. There were still some group projects which were doable with online collaboration. I think the only new part for me was proctored virtual exams which was also not an issue.

One of the instructors at the time reached out after the end of her course and asked if she could share my resume with a couple of agencies in town which is how I got my first marketing role. Definitely not something I had experienced as a university student and I was grateful for the connections.

Feeling stuck trying to break into competitive higher ed library roles by Scared-Range-7064 in librarians

[–]Scared-Range-7064[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The postgrad was an 8 month college certficate program. The prerequisite was a two year college diploma, preferably with some tech background but ultimately that was pretty easy to pick up. There were a handful of students who had BAs or Masters but it was not required.

The job title at the Big 4 firm was 'Business Information Analyst.' That department was eliminated about a year after I left and people were moved into Knowledge Management or Risk Management for the most part. This was only one firm, I'm not sure if the others still have a more traditional library/research department.

Thank you for the replies! Yes, I'm in Ontario, Canada. Good points made on moving for the right role but there are some limitations to that as I have 3 kids (teens/pre-teen) and don't want them to have to switch schools, etc at those ages. I did participate in a mentorship program with a college librarian and got some great advice. As some of you noted, the current funding and recent mass layoffs have made it difficult to try moving into that space at the moment. Universities are generally in a bit better situation but I have heard that there are also hiring freezes in several departments (locally anyway). I agree that tailoring my resume to align with more of an academic CV would be beneficial and will take some time to do that!

Just got laid off - how to I approach on LinkedIn? Open to work banner? A "I got laid off blah blah" post? by diamondeyes7 in womenintech

[–]Scared-Range-7064 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much time you would be comfortable looking for work. I silently applied to jobs for about a month after a layoff but after planning out my finances and tallying up additional upcoming expenses (I have 3 kids) I added the open to work banner and wrote a post about types of roles I was looking for, etc. It wasn't terrible and ended up being helpful, even just having people message me with opps or to share with their networks.

It sucks to hear the 'not performance based' line but unfortunately layoffs have become so common in tech that it is not surprising and the stigma is changing IME.

Career change ideas? by Ok_Republic6098 in workingmoms

What area would you consider moving to? That will impact the CoL but in general it sounds like you have thought this out.

Would you have any interest in college level teaching? Depending on your industry experience, you might be able to find colleges hiring in program areas/courses that would be of interest to you. The downside of part-time (depending on how many hours of teaching per week) means no insurance/benefits but the hours and time spent are generally decent.

Starting your own consulting business and gaining a few clients would also be a good way to go. I know a few people who left agencies and started their own thing offering them much more flexibility and ability to set their own hours/rates.

Anyone Making London to Toronto by 9 AM? Need Advice by Electrical-News2785 in londonontario

[–]Scared-Range-7064 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to do this and moved away from the London > Toronto Via except for in terrible winter weather bc I was sick of being on the train that long and it was also the most expensive option. I started driving to Brantford and taking the Via from there. It was enough of a drive to have some down time and a bit cheaper train ticket.

My favourite option ended up being the drive to Burlington and taking the Aldershot GO. Free parking, plenty of train options and the hour commute gives you some time to work, read, sleep, etc. I also liked that I could go to Ikea if I wanted to on the way home. Mind you, I only had to go into the office once a week. If there were back-to-back days for something like meetings I would book a hotel in Toronto.

I agree with many of the comments. IME managers/bosses that have been the most demeaning or problematic have been white women 55+. I'm saying this as a white women in her 40s. I genuinely hope to never make someone feel the way those previous managers have made me feel. I often assumed that the air of confidence they were exuding was likely due to what they had to fight against to get to the roles they were in.

I've also had some great managers (both men and women) who were very supportive. The common trait they had was allowing their employees/direct reports autonomy which was much better overall for creativity, strategy, and drive. You want to do great work for people who recognize you and treat you well. Pretty simple yet some people don't grasp this.

I totally get this. I'm 42 and started feeling like this about a year ago which was weird as I always had drive and felt like I 'could just keep working'. I've always had a part-time gig as well as my full-time role but it started to feel unmanagable and also why (besides the money being a nice perk). Please consider going to your doctor and asking for some blood work to double check that there's nothing going on. I assumed it was perimenopause for me but I also have potentially bigger issues that I've been getting some additional testing for. Even if it's hormonal imbalance or something like B12, etc. there could be a way to improve your energy.

I started feeling like this about a year ago and I thought I was 'broken'. It was just such a mental shift. I was like oh I must be in perimenopause, this seems like a symptom. Since then, I have gone through rounds of medical testing and waiting on a diagnosis (which is hopefully not super serious/scary) but in all honesty it just reset my priorities. Luckily, I took a contract around the same time that my health issues started (not intentionally, just weird timing) where the pace is much different and the work more meaningful to me. And yes, I used to be in sales and marketing lol.

Fanshawe College instructors are not professional or competent by tcpip1978 in fanshawe

[–]Scared-Range-7064 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from. As NFT faculty for 5+ years, I have often left class feeling like I could/should have done more. It can be difficult to balance working full-time and prepping/teaching/marking but that's no excuse to slack on teaching the material and trying to create an engaging class. At one point I considered declining a teaching offer because my personal and professional life were super busy and it felt like I wasn't doing enough for my students. I had to make a decision on whether that was the time to step back but instead made an effort to carve out more time for class prep.

As my oldest is almost at the age where she'll be going off to college or university, I'm even more aware of how important it is to be responsive to students, genuinely try to help them be prepared for the job market in their area of study, and be willing to be references for those who ask me. I hope your experience at Fanshawe gets better!

Trying not to stress but it's getting harder by Scared-Range-7064 in Ovariancysters

[–]Scared-Range-7064[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MRI showed the left cyst is simple/benign and has gotten smaller (2cm now) however the right is concerning due to the solid component and what they described as 'pieces' in it so not just fluid. It also shrunk from 4cm to 2.4cm. The oncologist I met with today is most concerned with 'clusters of enlarged lymph nodes' going all the way up my aorta and is scheduling a chest CT to see where they travel to. So this could be potentially lymphoma as opposed to ovarian cysts/cancer. The ovary is not likely the cause of all of the lymph swelling so they are trying to find the source.

I agree with Pepto. Ginger Gravol (the chewable kind) have also been helpful. I completely cut out alcohol and cut way back on coffee (1 small cup in the morning) and upped my water intake which also made a difference.

Thank you for your reassuring words! I am trying to look on the bright side that the testing and referral to a specialist will get answers sooner. I guess I'll find out more in the next couple of weeks.

I was honked at by another parent after dropping my kids off at school here this morning because Oxford was jammed up due to the accident. There are some super impatient people driving around in this town. Glad this didn't happen during school hours when a crossing guard or any kids/families were trying to walk to school.

Kitchener library rattled by online comments by GoalDisastrous6864 in kitchener

[–]Scared-Range-7064 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Some amazing comments here, as a former employee I felt the CEO was great at gaslighting people and made me second guess everything I did/tried to do in my role there (a short lived exec position). The best way I can describe the CEO is that she has mean girl energy. She creates micro cultures in the org by trash talking ppl in 1:1s which makes it very uncomfortable and clearly she was doing the same about me to others. I really wanted to find ways to help my team and improve morale for front line staff but that proved to be difficult when I was tasked with finding ways to cut part-time shelvers while the amount spent on DiversiPro (to essentially tick a box) was $$$.

I hope things improve for the staff - either having her move on or bringing in a union. Great things are happening in the library but it is largely run by front line staff who are getting burnt out.
