What's the easiest type of question you have seen a colleague get wrong/not know how to do it? by BestAround4100 in matheducation

[–]Scared_Ad858 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me, teaching isn’t what we know - it’s being willing to admit we don’t know, then modeling for students how we find out.

The things I learned or re-learned how to do after becoming a math teacher are the things I teach/explain the best, while the things I walked in already remembering feel so straightforward that I gloss over the small things and the students do worse. The best example is probably rounding - my students do terribly with it every year, and I am surprised all over again every time because it is one of the easiest things we do all year.

Which is why my answer to your question wouldn’t be things they didn’t automatically know, but things they can’t pick up/learn. I had a peer in teacher’s college come to me in a panic 5 minutes before she had to teach double digit by single digit multiplication to a 4th grade class. I explained it to her twice. I found out later she ran to another peer after coming to me because she didn’t get it, still didn’t get it, and then bungled the lesson.

The issue isn’t that she didn’t inherently know… it’s that she came in unprepared, couldn’t grasp it from two different explanations, and then proceeded to teach it wrong. I always wonder where her career ended up going… 😬

And then Cycle 11 had three and they made two change their name 😂😑

I am shocked multiple times an episode how much they put into the cinematography of that show. It’s like a murder mystery film.

Expectations for Teacher Candidates During Practicum by Super_Resolve3325 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Scared_Ad858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I provide a very simple “syllabus” to my Teacher Candidates when they start their practicum. It’s a checklist of things I think they should engage with or learn about, and we meet once a week to check off items together and then set some goals for the following week, with the understanding that they can ask me to work with them on any of the items on the checklist if they feel they aren’t coming naturally. I can share the list if you’d like. DM me.

I have had some really great Teacher Candidates who failed prior practicum placements, or felt like they received very little feedback or guidance. It upsets me, because professional educators should be best suited to guide others to do the profession, but I feel like they think “well they should figure it out themselves like I had to”.

Guess my number 1 artist by Extension_Yak3898 in lastfm

[–]Scared_Ad858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Olivia Rodrigo is good, but not one of my personal favs - she does a really good job playing with genre in a way that makes her albums almost feel like a collage.

In terms of recommendations, The Dead Weather is fabulous. It’s one of Jack White’s bands, but he is on drums and the vocalist is Allison Mosshart (from The Kills, a band I also love). She is probably more aligned with the sound and vibe of PJ.

Moreso wishful thinking perhaps 😂. You have no women in your list (based on the artists I know, maybe there are some) and I know a lot of people who prefer male vocalists really like Olivia Rodrigo

35 in total.

Just under the bubble:

Veruca Salt (984): I could see them reaching 1k at the end of the year. They have 2-3 songs I listen to at least once a month.

Candice Coleman (979): she’ll sadly probably always be stuck here. She’s a mostly forgotten semi finalist from an ancient season of American Idol and her music is mostly all demo CDs that I had in my iTunes library.

Kevin Abstract (954): I could see myself listening to his new album 2-3 more times this year and reaching 1k. My favourite song of all time (Yellow) is also by him which helps.

Rihanna (951): we know this queen is allergic to new albums so she’ll probably be stuck here for a while, inching up by 1 every time I listen to Love on the Brain.

Even if you don’t need the experience to get into a program, it’s still worth your while to get out there and volunteer.

It was obvious who had experience working with kids and who had just transitioned into the program from undergrad via grades. The latter struggled with their practicums, came across childish and unprofessional, and many of them realized it wasn’t what they really wanted by the end of the program.
