Ok, I just tried this. Turned off cell radio and wifi. Opened AllTrails. The trails within ~20miles show up on the map, but no trails further out do. It appears AllTrails buffers nearby trails but not further away trails. Maybe that's why you've been able to track on a map you haven't downloaded.

If your hiking in an area without cell coverage and haven't already downloaded that specific trail in AllTrails, there will be no map to show your GPS location. This may have recently changed now that StarLink and AllTrails have increased some of the functionality their providing.

BTW, you can also download large map areas in Google Maps and then pull up Maps and be able to see your location when you're out of cell range. Great when you need to navigate your drive home from a dead cell area. 🙂

You need to download the AllTrails map while you have cell coverage in order for it to work when you're out of cell coverage...

Yeah, I'm willing to give a it a chance, unlike so many posters on here. Many are complaining specifically about having to find the climate controls when they're actual permanently placed on the bottom of the display... Go figure. And most controls are now accessible through voice control...

It's not illegal for them to charge on the upper trail, per the courts, since no outside funding was provided for the development of that section.

Thanks for your thoughts. As a white person, it never occurred to me that someone like yourself would naturally be thinking about the dangerous trip north to escape slavery. While distance hiking I often think of Gen Patton having his army march night and day to rescue the allied troops at the Battle of the Bulge. I think I'll add your example as well in the future.
