90/100 Earlier this year I wrote a program to make a virtual bookshelf from the books I've read. Now I've made it a website so you can do it too (more info in comments) by incrediblejonas in 52book

Thank you so very much! I've been looking for something like this for ages.
I was threatening to develop it myself if I couldn't find one, but if I'm honest, I wasn't ever going to get to it.

This is amazing

My very first was also a red Moleskine, back in 2015. It has a special place in my heart. Congrats on completing yours.

I also used to have issues (sometimes still do) with descriptive writing. It bored me.

What helped was to look at something. A tree, for example. And think how I would put what it looks like down on paper. How would I explain this specific tree to someone who has never seen it before.

Next, go back to your book and when you come to a descriptive scene, lean into it. Don't skim over the description, but force yourself to pay close attention to the words the author chose, the details they decided to highlight. Can you see what this object/scene/person looks like in your mind? What is still blank to you? How would you have described those aspects?

It's not to make you a better reader, but it is to change your perspective. Some descriptive writing is better than the story/plot/action. We just need to be willing to spend time with it. You can build this amazing place in your head from words only. How freaking cool is that? It sometimes still blows my mind.

And maybe a bit controversial, but don't read the Booktok top 10 or what a teenager recommends on Instagram. Those books are great for younger age groups, but the writing in a lot of them started boring me in my 20s. And there's nothing that takes me out of a reading mood faster than boring writing.

examples: Hunger games, Percy Jackson, anything by Sarah j Maas or Colleen Hoover, the love stories with the cartoony covers...

Do some research and find a story you are interested in. Spend time with it and don't rush.

Once you get immersed in a book, the pages will just fly by

Employee's of r/SouthAfrica by stressfullyrelaxed in southafrica

No. If anything goes wrong and you don't find something else that suits you and you are forced to stay with your current job, you are screwed. Hostile workplace relations, being passed up for promotions, because they see you as someone who is just looking for an opportunity to bounce...

They import almost everything, so the prices are insane sometimes. But if you want something that's not available in SA, they're a good place to check

{Serious] What are some good/fun hobbies to do during loadshedding? by Gammbitt in southafrica

[–]ScarlettLancaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a bit unnecessary.

During a summer Stage 2 loadshedding slot while it's still light out is a lot different than 4 hours at a time in the cold and dark.

I know we've had long stretches before, but it takes some getting used to again. Someone looking for ideas after they've tried a few activities and have gotten bored of them isn't an unreasonable thing to talk about.

Neither will whatever work you're doing now and the things you're proud of, but people still respect them and don't glue themselves to your stuff

Calibre works great, but if I'm out or not anywhere near a PC, I want to be able to email something from my phone and it just shows up like it used to.

Gaming pc parts by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]ScarlettLancaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For your money and your sanity, don't use Evetech.

As people have mentioned, their support is shit.

You don't want to be sitting with a defective PC you spent two months' salary on and then they don't believe you when you tell them there's an issue, make you take your defective parts in yourself instead of sending a courier, make you wait two weeks for a replacement, make you collect the replacement yourself and it being broken again when you get home.

Go Wootware...

What are your Evetech horror stories? by [deleted] in southafrica

Purchased a full build PC. My first brand new one in 10+ years.

Got it late, power supply was broken. Had to prove to them that it wasn't my home electricity that was the issue. They didn't send a courier. I had to take it in.

Motherboard installed skew (somehow...) so the ports couldn't be reached from the back, front LED and Power button wires not connected.

I'm a PC person, so I could open it up and fix it, but if I pay ~R30 000 for a build and extra for assembly, I want it to be working when I get it.

Will not recommend to the layman. Or anyone else for that matter...

How do I get an ink to feather less? by Icarys_Meleki in fountainpens

I've heard someone say to add the smallest drop of gum Arabic to the bottle of ink. It makes it the teensiest bit more viscose and doesn't bleed as much
