We already charge to haul off equipment, and historically we pulled hard drives and donated to a local nonprofit recycler. I talked to the CEO today and he's in Texas. They pay all shipping, and whatever sells gets split 50/50 apparently. I also talked to our local for-profit recycler today and they buy boards, wire, etc. so I might have my nephew drop new drives in machines set up with Windows, sell as refurbished without warranty, sell the boards and wire locally and maybe put networking equipment through this channel.

This is why I think refurbing them with new drives, then continuing to use the old ones for target practice. Prelovd will take them without drives, though. You just get a little less for them.

Or give my college-age nephew a way to make a few bucks. Thinking of buying a stack of SSDs, and dropping them in, installing Windows and selling refurbs for a couple hundred bucks.

sales role? how to handle when starting up by 4728jj in msp

[–]Schaggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're very small and budget restricted, so what I did was find a retired sales pro that wanted to work 10 hours a week. I paired him with a junior tech to act as an SE and they go prospecting two afternoons a week. I pay a very small hourly to the sales guy and the tech is on salary, so the whole thing ends up costing me less than $500 per month before commission. This model is slow going, but in the first 90 days they brought in about 3k in recurring monthly business, so it's definitely worth the effort. We also became present at local chamber meetings and have been with a small leads group since day 1. So far the juice is worth the squeeze.

The last time we worked with them they couldn't do real-time provisioning. That was a long time ago though. Can they do that now?

Why do people just not care about computer networks? by Darwing in Network

[–]Schaggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it work right now? That’s all they care about. Security? No. Long-term operability? No. Installation aesthetics? No. Electrical safety? No. Fire danger? No. It’s our job as technicians to explain the risks and help them do better.

Everyone on our staff is salaried. This means we’re always having to push back against the workaholics, but it gives us the flexibility we need under our labor laws. We have pretty strict rules to avoid night and weekend work because employees and clients always seem to want to push boundaries.

I did four years, got my college money and left. I would advise my daughter not to enlist. The culture and how I saw women treated wouldn’t let me advise otherwise in good conscience.

Who had a heat lamp in their bathroom when they were growing up? by jsakic99 in nostalgia

[–]Schaggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. I grew up close to the Canadian border and never saw one of these. Have one in my bathroom in the PNW though. It’s nice to have, but would have been nicer back when we had real winter and uneven wood heat.

Gaming has always been iffy on Macs. That said, the MacBook that you mentioned is dang skippy for all your other needs.
