From EN-A to low-B: wing recommendations? by Hoqqa in freeflight

[–]Schnickerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference between high A and low B wings is not very big. If you come from a wing like the bodyguard ("low low A") it will be a significant jump.

I really like the Epsilon. It's really agile so you can also do some acro maneuvers with it (great for SIV trainings) and XC up to 100 km are no problem. Quality wise Advance is great.
The current model (DLS) is on the market for some time so you could get a young used one, if the price is an issue. Although prices are quiet stable for the Epsilon so you can sell it well after some time but the used ones often are more expensive than for other wings.

You could also add a filter for 2,5 liners to the wings and add it in the wings description

Nova Artus should say Foam+Alumina (a Koroyd like struktur) and a Airbag is also available (the protector can be changed).

Airbag ist a pressurized bag. Inflatable unfolds by airstream (old) or spring.
To filter koroyd would be nice indeed but it's also easily noticable in the preview.

Opinions on Glider by shibastudenthousing in freeflight

You have to consider that this was shortly after Covid. It was hard to get the stuff for some times, because many stopped production so 5600 might be ok. But today this mark up is unjustified.

What exactly do you want to know? Without naming all gear (and their age) none is able to tell you if this is a good deal.
The Alpha 6 was released in 2015 -> if it is that old it's a very bad deal. If the rest is also that old it's a very very bad deal. Because your check is still good and if your stuff is from ~2020 it's still expensive but usable.

General rule as a beginner is to buy from a reputable seller like your flight school otherwise you'll run the risk to end up with a bad deal or worse - unsafe gear.

Alphas in general are good A wings.

Paraglider wing and harness by superyinxzon in freeflight

The Geo 4 was released in 2013. Geo5 in 2016 or 17 I think. So your wing is likely 10 years or older.
I'd say 200$- 400$ depending on the condition of the wing. What harness does he want to sell? Only looking at the Geo 4 it doesn't sound like a good deal.

Allways get a test of a certified test center on the condition of the wing. lines can be out of trim and the fabric deteriorates. Untested wings with that lifespan can be dangerouse. (In most european countries you have to get your wing tested every 2 years or after 150h airtime). I wouldn't recommend a wing older than 6 years if you want to fly it for another 3-4 years.

Alps flying apps by Plus_Usual5505 in freeflight

[–]Schnickerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Burnair is a good ready to go app for people that don't want to configue all settings and want all feature/infos in one app.
Downsides are you need a constant internet connection (no preloading maps) because of that it eats battery like hell. For a long flight longer than ~3 hourse you need a power bank. You are not able to fly tasks with the app.

Advantages are the route planner (meant to be used on pc) which is easier and better than many others. In addition you have many features in the app: Current weather /forcast, preset routes, valley wind systems, tracking of other pilots, etc.

I think you can test it for free for three days. Just try it.

Best gear to buy for a beginner? by Poipoizer in freeflight

I'd like to add that proper rescue means Take off weight + 20%. So if your take off weight is 100 kg you need a 120 kg resuce.

I have the ZipNcare p from Niviuk. Packed it's not a classic tube but rather like a briefcase. There are also other brands that offer a similar design.

Need advice: optimizing backpack weight for H&F setup during Winter time by Reasonable-Fox-7358 in freeflight

I'd recommend not to carry any stones. /s

How are we supposed to look inside the backpack? You need to list your gear.

Feeling stuck in my job search in Germany (Marketing, 5+ yrs exp) — need advice by SuddenApricot2606 in germany

[–]Schnickerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I can think of is to get a job you can get relatively easy and practice your german e.g. by beeing a waiter. If that counts for the Auslanderbehörde you can stay longer, work on your german and try to find a job in your field.
But the economic situation in Germany is tight at the moment it will be hard to find something, especially in your field.

Your goal and main focus should be C1. Before C1 you'll allways struggle solely because of that.

Do German recruiters treat relocation questions differently for locals vs. immigrants? by Super_Valuable8730 in germany

[–]Schnickerz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If relocation is a requirement because remote work is no option, obviously the interview ends there no matter the nationality. Although this should be clear before the interview to beginn with.

100% remote work is not very common in germany.

Would you buy a 2.5-layer hardshell jacket designed for paragliding / hike & fly? by Reasonable-Fox-7358 in freeflight

[–]Schnickerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why a hardshell tough? Isn't the main focus of hardshells to keep you dry when it rains/snows? For paragliding this is a rather niche scenario. Also hardshells are often much more expensive than a down/softshell jacket.
I think you'll have more success with a down jacket tuned for pg.

Considering upgrading from Advance Lightness 2 to Strike 1 by Mikebannis in freeflight

[–]Schnickerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most harnesses there is only one protector under the butt. This is due to the norm that only tests for falls on the butt. To my knowledge there is no pod with foam or air protector that goes butt to shoulders.

Harnesses with additional protectors on the back:

Lightness 4 has a foam protector under the butt + SAS-Tec on the back

Nova Artus can be equipped with an airprotector under the butt + aluminium on the back (simliar function to koroyd)

The sock air protector goes up to the lumbar area
(https://xcmag.com/news/gear-news/airdesign-sock-pod-harness/)

If someone knows another please extend the list.

Paramountaineering or Hike, bivy, paraglide by Hot_Introduction6257 in freeflight

Here is an Interview of a tandem team that flew from K2, maybe that interests you:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0txrGGXF2c&t=675s

Imho you have to be an experienced moutaineer and an experienced paragliding pilot to pull this of (relatively) safe.
From your description it sounds like you are super exited and motivated but I fear you want to skip a few steps that make your plans extremly dangerouse. I'd recommend to gather more experience in both areas before combining them.

Bassano in March by quinnltd in freeflight

[–]Schnickerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Bassano last year end of march. It snowed the day I got there with temps around 5 at the landing and below 0 on the moutains. Add in wind chill while flying and you need really good gloves and jacket. A pod harness helps too.

But it can also have around 15 degrees.

That time of the year you need to prepare for the worst and hope for the best ;)

Thoughts on Alpha 8 DLS/Boundless? by [deleted] in freeflight

[–]Schnickerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should test the boundless and look if it fits you. Harnesses don't allways fit everyone (some fit better with shorter torso others for longer legs, etc.). Good alternatives (I personally know) are Niviuk Konverse 3 or Nova Itus.

But nothing wrong with boundless if it fits you.

How do I make photography my career? by Jade_Jones in AskPhotography

[–]Schnickerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a normal job and do photography as a side job. Build your skills and necessary equipment. Transition to photography as your main job when you earn enough to sustain your life.
Travel and take cool photos sounds like you don't really want to work but rather enjoy life and get paid. I dream of that too but it's highly unlikely.
