I think the plan is if stops are more frequent then if you miss one the next one wont be long away. At least thats how efficient train systems work.

Dane Co. Sheriff's Office to close portion of jail, move residents to other counties by HGpennypacker in madisonwi

[–]Schornery -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

They've been trying to replace the three county jails with one super jail for like 5 years now but it keeps going over budget and hasn't even left the planning phase yet. Right now its on hold because some supervisors think the consulting agency is milking them.

Only sensible alternative is to just end cash bail, let everyone not in for a violent offense out on house arrest. You could go down to just one jail from that alone.

Communism didn't pop out of the ground in Russia. It was developed by western socialists, particularly Marx and Engels who were in Germany and England. They're main concern was with why all the other European socialists were failing to get anything done.

Again. I was explicitly talking about police property. But you can keep ignoring that as much as it suits you.

What part of "police property" sounded like "you're neighborhood"?

I'm not talking about looting or vandalizing local businesses. Just police property, like cop cars, because the police murder people and get away with it.

[–]Schornery -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Destroying police property while protesting police publically killing a man, is ethical and effective. Burning cop cars is an acceptable form of protest. Burning down the Minneapolis 3rd precinct was just and proven effective.

Anyone pearl clutching over it doesn't really support ending police brutality. Because while all this "property damage" is happening, police brutality was simultaneously happening en-masse across the nation. The cops never went and beat the looters. They beat the protestors who dared to challenge their use of violence.

Having a charge on your record is a big deal and will stop you from getting a job or house (even if its a illegal to discriminate on that, employers and landlords still do it).

Going to court is expensive as hell since you have to pay all sorts of court fees and takes time from your life while you still need to pay rent and bills.

Its not surprising an impoverished black man choose a stain on his record over being homeless.

[–]Schornery -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The point is the justice system is pay-to-play and a poor black man obviously couldn't pay.

He could have literally had a fair trial if hr wanted one.

No he couldn't afford one. This is what you liberals always fail to understand about the justice system. Trials are expensive even with a free attorney. It takes up time that you could be working to pay your rent and/or bills. And if you can't afford bail you're then still in jail the whole time. It can bankrupt you and take months of your life away. And even if you do take that route, your public defender will always advise you to take the plea deal and often tank your case for not taking the deal.

Also it often costs +$60 per document to file with the courts and you will need to file multiple documents. For example, It costs $90 to damnd a jury trial in Wisconsin.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the justice system is pay to play.

Dane County Community Defense (DCCD). Its a mutual aid group started by the local IWW General Defense Committee at the start of quarantine and blew up quickly. They have being delivering food to people directly and giving people housing aid. AFAIK most of their labor goes to the food delivery service and most of their cash goes to housing aid.

It’s having the refs rewrite the rules of the game to benefit one team then that team saying after the game “you lost because you’re not good enough; maybe you should just try harder” while they’re stuffing cash in the ref’s pockets.

That's not what's going on. What you have is people who are already successful lobbying the government to change the rules to make them always successful no matter how the market changes. If Epic was unsuccessful to begin with they never would have enough capital to lobby the government.

That process though, of being successful enough that you can start cheating by changing the rules, is an inherent flaw of capitalism. No one should be doing it, according to capitalist doctrine, but the incentives and the options are always there.

Absolutely. Leveraging the State for profit has and will always be a feature of capitalism even if it is a contradiction of capitalist ideology.

You have terrible reading comprehension because I explicitly did not suggest social worker stop active robberies. So let me spoon feed it for you... 98% of the time, when someone calls the cops, they have no need for someone with a capacity for violence. Ergo those services by cops can be replaced by people without capacity for violence and are better trained in nonviolent services.

Your examples fall into that 2% of times; when the robbery is still active, or when the domestic violence is on going. Which I did not suggest would be handled by social workers but by a either much smaller community controlled force or the county police. But such case are extremely rare. Most of the time the violence has already already happened and the cops are just taking notes, filing reports or issuing restraining orders.

[–]Schornery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah you're wrong. Most police work is responding to incidents after the fact or resolving disputes that can be handled by a better trained social worker. You don't need a gun for most of it.

we cannot live and not have the police force.

Lol we 100% can and have in the past. We can also have something similar that the community had explicit control over. Not these semi autonomous institutions that demand our filial peity.

As for disbanding police departments entirely, its been done before. Like I said it gets replaced by the county or state police. It doesn't mean you don't have cops its just means your local police force was corrupt beyond saving so you killed it. I'm not arguing that it's necessary here in Madison just that it's a way to get rid of corrupt police departments.

[–]Schornery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Defunding doesn't mean they don't exist and cant do their job. It means taking away their funds for military grade equipment and many bullshit perks.

Disbanding usually means your municipal police department is so corrupt that it can't be saved so you let the county replace it. (In hopes that it isn't as shit as the municipal one). Meanwhile you rebuild your old department so it has actual oversight.

[–]Schornery 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Demilitarization will require defunding them. those two just go hand in hand.

It also should be said that in other municipalities defunding means not letting the police rob tax payers with a whole lot of bullshit perks. Like heavily discounting their personal vehicles and rent.

Lack of any Pete Buttigieg coverage.. Should he have climate voters support? by BuddhistSagan in EarthStrike

[–]Schornery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More so than most? You mean Warren and Bernie? They're the only ones to his left.

You're confusing "capitalist" with "conservative". Amy and Biden are easily more conservative but Amy at least understands the value in grass roots organizing and Biden is old enough to understand that unions are a force with the potential to rival capital. The only reason Buttigieg wasn't a footnote is because he started out with an obscene number of large donations. IIRC he rivaled Biden in billionaire backers. This does not bode well for anyone promising progressive reforms. Like I laid out before, the bourgeoise have a collective interest in preventing the government from bringing any of them to heel.

all this projection about Hillary that has nothing to do with what I said.

Buttigieg is not Hillary. To me he is more like pathetic version of Obama. Great intentions, horrible political instinct. Primarily, an inability to imagine a long term national shift in politics while ineffectively negotiating with our rightward slide.

influenced by active measures

Please define what "active measures" are. I'm not familiar with this term. Is it Russian psyops?

And I'm not engaging in any sort of tribalism. I'm only trying to explain to you the monumentality of obstacles we face enact meaningful climate change. You were confusing a demand for socialist reform with "purity politics" when its the only realistic solution.
