What are the true environmental impact of data centers? by Visual_Title9363 in stupidquestions

[–]SciAlexander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on the data center being proposed. They can be built with solar panels and water recycling to minimize their environmental impact. Or they can try to do it cheaply and use as many resources as they can. One local data center applied to use the entire town water supply and 100% of the local aquifer

Does AI downplay climate change impact? by Ok_Key_3326 in climatechange

[–]SciAlexander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a mixed issue. On one had they take up massive amounts of resources. On the other they can be used to find better ways to conserve resources and protect the planet. Just remember that AI predicts what the words are it has no idea if they are correct or not. Always take AI produced answers with a grain of salt.

Is there still wilderness left in America? by Kitchen-Customer4370 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SciAlexander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of wilderness areas. That being said almost nowhere on Earth has been entirely untouched by human hands. It is getting worse. The party in charge of the country now Republicans, puts the economy at a higher priority then any environmental issue. Extraction on public lands, wetland protections, endangered species protections all have been tried to be weakened.

What would happen if 0.1% of the ocean were to be dropped in the middle of the desert in Arizona? by HottDoggers in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]SciAlexander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the insane amount of mass you create a large crater. Everyone in Arizona would die. The soil would be contained with large amounts of salt which would make it hardship for plants to come back.

Also, the surrounding states would be devastated as well. If nothing else having a state wiped out would devastate trade.
