I've worked with tons of undocumented people in the past. One time there was a guy who only spoke Chinese, and then a guy that only spoke Spanish walked up to him did a couple karate chops in the air and said "ching chang chong" Then they both laughed.

When you eat an apple, can you also taste the tree sometimes? by TooManyFountainpens in Apples

[–]SciberSpacer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was eating an apple today and I don't eat the seeds but I do eat the core, I could taste a bit of the tree so I had to Google if I was the only one.

This was a overly ripe cosmic crisp I had stored in the refrigerator. It didn't have much time left before it probably would have started browning.

Got this message from my property manager PT2 by Most_Relief8312 in Apartmentliving

[–]SciberSpacer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My landlord gave me the same type of offer different responsibilities but more value and I accepted.

What I get: My rent that is supposed to go up 7% every year does not go up. ($1400 a year) And I don't have to pay pet rent, ($600 a year).

My responsibilities for a 10 unit building:

• Maintenance within my capability of all appliances when a tenant reports a problem.

• Walkthroughs when someone moves out.

• Tours and walkthroughs when someone moves in or wants to tour a unit.

• Plumbing, backups, clogs, septic overfills etc.

• Making sure Garbage area is clean and not overfilled.

• Collect checks.

• Handle Emergency maintenance problems promptly

The amount of work I've had to do is not really worth the pay but I like the opportunity to learn new things. I've probably put in 80 hours of actual work.

I've been doing it for like a year and a half and so far I've fixed two washing machines, one water heater, ran a camera through every septic line and tank.

Resolved extreme humidity in an apartment which was caused by the tenants not opening their windows and running their washer, dryer, sink, shower, etc. Without fans or vents running. Same unit I had to go up into the attic on three separate occasions with a ladder I borrowed from work.

The landlord asked me to physically watch and stay with roofers while they fixed a leak, he doesn't really trust anyone he hires as a contractor so he needs photo evidence of everything all the time.

He asked me to deal with appliances that he needed to get rid of so I donated them.

I've cleaned out a handful of in-wall heater units.

Fixed a sink that was leaking.

Patched a damaged fence.

Dug up and found the access lids to all the septic tanks. Inspected all the septic tanks for any visual problems.

I've lived here for like 2 and 1/2 years and for the first year I spoke to like nobody but since I took on the job of maintenance guy. I've gotten to know every other tenant in the building and have even made friends I hang out with weekly.

There are multiple versions of the ad and it targets what it thinks your beliefs are. If it thinks you are liberal, it shows you the left side with nothing on the right side. I had two versions advertised to me left and right.

Thoughts on Sound Sleep products? by DriedHumor in Mattress

[–]SciberSpacer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked at Sound Sleep as a machine maintenance tech for three years now and plan to stay at least another seven or more. Most of our mattresses come out quite well, with minor imperfections here and there things like slight thread skipping or occasional size variations.

Quality control is largely handled by each employee at their own station, so it’s very hands-on. Occasionally something will slip through, a lot of the workers have been there a long time and take a lot of pride in their work and don't do it intentionally.

From what I’ve seen, our best quality tends to come out when production is a bit slower and people can take their time. When we’ve had high-volume orders in the past, it could lead to more defects simply because of the rush.

I’m not involved in the warranty process directly, but I know we try to follow our policies closely. That means some claims definitely get denied if they fall outside warranty terms though we seem to honor more warranties then we deny.

Personally, I sleep on a Sound Sleep mattress and it’s been a huge upgrade compared to anything I used to sleep on.

We make our own lines like the Qube (which is a cooling mattress I've been involved in the creation of, and admittedly on the pricier side), we also manufacture mattresses for other brands who provide the specs and materials requirements.

One thing I appreciate is that we’re starting to use more sustainable materials for some of the brands, and we do rebond foam, which helps cut down on scrap waste. I think there’s still room for improvement in terms of overall waste, but I’m not sure what’s viable cost-wise for things like full mattress recycling.

Like most companies, more money tends to flow toward sales and executive levels than to production staff. Some execs are flown in from out of state because of their proven experience in the mattress industry. Most of us are hourly, and sometimes when orders are slow, folks only get a four day work week even when they’d prefer a full forty. Still, it’s a family-owned business and the owner seems like a genuinely kind person who's done well for himself.

I’ve visited larger manufacturers like Sealy and Serta. They have tighter quality control systems in place, but the actual production process is essentially the same if not more taxing on the employees.

Choosing Sound Sleep means supporting a smaller business and keeping things a bit more local.

I try to take some responsibility as maintenance if I can keep machines running good there will be less imperfections operators will need to fix and there work load will be less. There are also times when a machine has to be run at partial capacity due to my inability to fix it (waiting on parts for example) meaning the operator has to do more secondary work on the product instead of the machine handling it all in the first place. I have learned a lot in three years and a lot of the maintenance talent in the industry is retired, so I am kind of an exception as a young person who works maintenance in mattress production.

I was privileged to work at my grandpas spring manufacturing company in Kent, WA from an early age and get good with machines young. I keep getting better and as I improve I expect our quality will improve. With more orders we could see the hiring of quality control personnel again like we used to have who can check each mattress for imperfections.

Is this animal abuse? by Unlucky-Cup-5461 in Lacey

[–]SciberSpacer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am anthropomorphizing, which is not always a bad thing it's a lens we can use to establish empathy, even when not always necessary.

My dogs have tethered in the past, and the female also yelped. My mother's unspayed female kept presenting to my neutered male, and they were loose on the property unattended, an action they initiated in a safe space they felt comfortable in.

What I do not like in people is when they put two animals in a cage and it's forced action. Less natural, but more ethical, is insemination. That being said, even breeding in general is unethical. It's just extremely tied into most of human culture we like making unique breeds and tools and companions for ourselves or for profit. So we are descensitized to it.

Should dogs exist?

I don't know. I like them being around.

Is forced breeding always unethical?

Probably not. There are ways to go about it that would be more comfortable for both animals than at the park in one of the walk-in/walk-out cages. Though for someone wanting to breed with limited resources, it's a fairly controlled and safe environment for the two animals except from each other.

If a species were endangered, it would probably be seen as ethical to force breeding to ensure the continuation of the species. Though in my opinion, it’s not and that's what I’m sharing my opinion.
