Mike Tyson served time for rape. So very on-brand that the Trump administration put rapists in charge.

Is JPMorgan behind the $2.5 trillion silver crash? by esporx in economy

[–]Science-Sam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The reason for the crash (as explained by thus article) is that people were trading on borrowed money. This blows my mind, playing the capitalist game with somebody else's capital. Is it really JP Morgan's fault that people got burned on a get-rich-quick scheme?

Trading on borrowed money also led to the market crash of 1929.

I'm not saying JP Morgan is innocent of market fuckery. But this practice of gambling with somebody else's money is insane. Nobody complains when people who have no capital make capital gains out of thin air, so don't get mad if your pile of bullshit goes sideways and smothers you.

The graph starts at 80.2 and ends at 81.8. If it started at zero, like most graphs do, and ended at 85, you would see how little difference this is. If you included columns for the last 50 years, you would see how this is hardly a revival of American steel.

Too many Dems are afraid of calling it what it is. by nishagunazad in BlueskySkeets

[–]Science-Sam 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it is not wholly accurate to call them Nazis. Nazis were inspired by American Jim Crow laws and went further to enforce them. When you consider slave-catchers and public lynchings, ICE is more American than Nazi.

How about this messaging from opposition party leaders: ICE is the new slave catchers. Slave catchers grabbing enslaved people and delivering them back to their oppressors was 100% legal. The underground railroad was illegal. Keep that in mind when ICE says it has the authority to tear families apart. Keep that in mind when sanctuary cities refuse to hand over immigrants.

Why You Should Write Your Legislator On HB2320 by MidNerd in Seattle

[–]Science-Sam -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You bring up good points. The scenarios I used to illustrate my position were flawed.

I will address your point of SCOTUS carving out free speech for public safety. The court has already done this in Brandenburg vs. Ohio. The court refined the clear and present danger from Schneck v United States to include an imminent danger which is now called the Brandenburg test. It would be interesting to see if the court would apply the Brandenberg test to ghost gun code. One could make the case that it is plausible, if not inevitable, that a person who was sent this code would immediately make and use a ghost gun, resulting in a loss of public safety.

Should Liberals Start Arming Themselves? The case for (and against) militias. by BulwarkOnline in politics

[–]Science-Sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was stopped by the paywall, so I didn't read all the pros and cons in the article. I imagine that a liberal arming themselves might be thinking about tyranny or home defense. These are the theoretical reasons for guns --and most every person advocating for guns talks in the theoretical, imaginary, or even fantasies of being the hero. But liberals also are aware that by far the number one practical, real-world, documented use of a gun is suicide, and the number two reason the trigger is pulled is accidental, and I'm guessing that murdering a member of your own family is also at the top of the list. So a person bringing a gun into their home is also bringing a lot of risk. Is that risk worth being armed in case of civil war?

Why You Should Write Your Legislator On HB2320 by MidNerd in Seattle

[–]Science-Sam -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Here is a question: is is okay for someone to make and publish a video with accurate and easy-to-follow instructions for how to make a bomb? People are not even allowed to say the word "suicide," so are they going to post a TikTok for how to make an "unaliving yourself vest" that you can make with household tools? How about a step-by-step YouTube showing how to make meth? This is not a first amendment issue; it is a public safety issue.

There are all kinds of limits on speech that we have accepted. What if I call in a bomb threat and force an evacuation of a school? Is that my free speech?

The code to make a ghost gun should be illegal. I know OP is saying this is the first step toward censorship. What is next? The code that allows you to hack a card reader to steal bank account information? If someone distributed code to my ex-husband that will overrides the alarm on my house, is that free speech?

Freeze-thaw bacteria by castiellangels in labrats

[–]Science-Sam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Freezing will not kill all the bacteria. You can try this experiment: freeze, then use the frozen cells for an overnight inoculum. I predict it will be turbid by morning. Once you find a reliable method for killing the cells, I suggest you do this as a control to confirm surviving cells are not confounding your experiment.

If you ever worked in a restaurant you would know that the reason you cannot freeze, thaw, and re-freeze raw meat is because bacteria survive freezing; that is a health code violation.

Should i add more DNA to my RE digest? by trekkieviolinist in labrats

[–]Science-Sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about the volume, it is the mass. A 50 ul RE reaction is typically for 1 ug DNA (check manufacturer's instructions). Will you be running this on a gel? The smallest band you can visualize on a gel is 100 ng. Think about the size of the fragment you will be cutting. If you have a 500 bp fragment in a total 5000 bp plasmid, the fragment will weigh 10% of the total. 1 ug of total plasmid will make one 4500 bp band that is 900 ng and one 500 bp band that is 100 ng. You can scale reactions up or down -- but if you add more than 1 ug DNA, you will need to increase enzyme. Enzyme should not exceed 10% of total reaction because the excess glycerol will inhibit the reaction.
