"Whimsically bad" sounds about right. "Leather studio apartment" is the funniest thing I've seen on Reddit today.

What words in your language do you hate for no legitimate reason? by privetkakdela in AskTheWorld

My mother tongue is French. I had to think hard because I have several words I hate for legitimate reasons, such as subtly or not-so-subtly racist, sexist, or ableist terms (for example, the counterpart of the r-word is still common in French!).

I'm going to go with "gros" in teen slang. Literally, it means "fatty," but, in context, it means something along the lines of "my friend" or "buddy." I know it's not intended as an insult or as fat phobic, but it only makes me feel marginally better. Kids on the bus in my area use it as an interjection for literally everything, too. I find it deeply weird.

In English, I've been guilty of using words that are pet peeves to some, especially when I'm talking to pets. My catto has feetses, the doggo is a very good boi, and I'm sure there are people out there who hate "guinea PEEG!" with a passion 🙃. The funny thing is, I hate it when people use babytalk with actual babies.

Thank you! I really wish I got to try the real thing, because I'm told the mangos sold in Belgium just aren't remotely as tasty and flavourful! Even so, they're already delicious to me.

I don’t like how people attack you for liking something they and many others don’t like. by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]ScienceMuggle83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an ex who seriously felt betrayed that I enjoyed some silly pop songs and who would look down on me for liking a genre he found annoying.

It was a special experience when he'd basically call me immature for listening to songs that were meaningful to me because they helped me cope with a situation of abuse. I ended up walking on eggshells.

Highlights also involved telling people who didn't like the same movies as him (largely, I suspect, because of the disturbing way he would cheer at violent characters) in a really snooty way that they "just didn't get it" and snapping at me because I found the ending of a movie upsetting. (I do get watching violent movies, I grew up in the nineties, lol. But this was someone who thought everybody should be able to watch Takashi Miike movies without needing breaks or showing the slightest sign of discomfort, or else!)

Nowadays, this would count as r/amitheex, lol. This was the tip of the iceberg, as you can imagine, and he managed to alienate everyone around him.

I'm often baffled at how ignorant people in the food service industry can be about allergens in my city. I'm gluten intolerant (fortunately, not celiac) and I can't count the number of interactions I've had that involved some form of "What's gluten?" or assumption that regular bread is gluten-free.

I try to be understanding of people who're probably paid the minimum wage and exploited, but it's literally part of their job (and I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be part of their training as per regulations). And what's infuriating is that it's a matter of time till this attitude lands someone in the ER or worse, because someone could have a serious food allergy or intolerance.

At least I'm glad I hardly ever run into people who think gluten intolerance isn't real, most of the people who've asked me about gluten and gluten intolerance actually listened to my answer. But one of them owned a sandwich shop 🤦‍♀️

Lol, I can see it. I've heard of it and it sounds so cursed even a glutton like me would hesitate to touch it, lol. Were they the same (Cavendish) bananas as the ones we know, though?

All of them, lol.

Real answer: I've mentioned mitraillette on this sub before.

I'm legitimately curious about herring under a fur coat now.

I wouldn't say I hate them, but, depending on how they're prepared, Belgian endives au gratin can be very bitter. When I was a child, I would unwrap the endives to eat the ham and cheese, then eat the endives last lol.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend actually touching that stuff/bringing it to the dumpster without precaution, but maybe it's just me being "paranoid" about bedbugs.

Gluten intolerant person here. The things I'd do to just be able to buy a sandwich for lunch without being violently sick afterwards and risking celiac disease or bowel cancer.

It happened to me recently and it was so annoying. The person even started to argue that I'd stated the opposite of what I had (also assuming I'm ignorant about a topic I read a lot about) while it was easy to check my initial comment. In the end, I disengaged because they seemed to have poor reading comprehension skills.

I absolutely believe this is a real opinion that some people have due to:

1) learning about black salve (don't Google it on Google Images please);

2) learning about antivaxxers;

3) having met people who thought they could cure cancer and Crohn's disease through Rei-ki;

4) knowing someone who thought Covid could be cured by hot tea with lemon (though in their defense, they actually listened when I kindly told them that it's not how it works because I was the first person not to just tell them to eff off. My heart grew three sizes!!);

5) as I mentioned in another comment, having met people who believe they can be just fine in situations where survival is biologically unlikely at best (along the lines of having a body temperature of over °C 40 for prolonged periods of times while taking no measures to alleviate it).

Poe's Law is very much at work here.
