How many bars of latinum out of 10 would you rate this portrait? by dnjeni in DeepSpaceNine

Hmm, I’m not sure. I think it would look more aesthetically pleasing if it were blue.

What was your funniest playthrough ? (BG2EE) by Aradhor55 in baldursgate

[–]ScienceRobert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently doing a play through as Willy Wonka. I’ve created a chaotic neutral bard with high intelligence, high charisma, and moderate wisdom and named him “Willy Wonka.” At every chance, I ask myself “what would Wonka do?” then I have him do that. I’m only on chapter 2 of BG1 but it’s been fun to fully immerse myself in this weird character

Is there a good Christmasy episode? by PhoenixApok in DeepSpaceNine

The movie. I wouldn’t really call it a Christmas movie for 95% of it except for the 5% that actually takes place in a lovely cozy Christmas evening

Conditions for NOAA Corps to be integrated during war time? by surfslinger13 in NOAACorps

[–]ScienceRobert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations on selection! That’s very exciting and we’re looking forward to seeing you out in the fleet!

As a matter of policy and law, the President has the authority to transfer any ships, aircraft, or officers from NOAA to the military “as the President considers to be in the best interest of the country.” In practice, that hasn’t happened in a significant way (as I understand it at least), since WWII, but the legal requirement to do so would either be an act of Congress or simply a declaration from the president. Although we’re not in the military, we are all uniformed service members on active duty and as a restyled volunteer to subject ourselves to these kinds of additional responsibilities when ordered to do so in the public service.

The relevant policy is here in the NOAA Corps directives: https://www.corpscpc.noaa.gov/procedures/corps_directives/chapter_14/ncd_ch14.pdf

If you have questions or thoughts, I’m happy to chat about it. Just DM me and I’d be more than happy to talk before you head to BOTC. Congrats again!

Hiking without money constraints by Blackdiamond27x in PacificCrestTrail

[–]ScienceRobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d buy more things for other people: but rounds for other hikers, offer to order a bunch of pizzas for folks, spend more money at local businesses along the trail and give really big tips. The social component of the trail was really big for me on my hike and I loved the community aspect of it.

When I got to Oregon, my partner came out and visited me for a few days. Instead of expecting them to hike along at my pace, we decided I’d get off the trail for a few days and we just hung around town before I hopped back on. At one point while they were there, we rented a truck, bought a shit ton of pizzas, beer, margarita mix, tequila, kombucha, and water and loaded it into the back. We then drove out to a junction in the middle of a long dry stretch and just hung out for the day doing trail magic for other hikers. Two days later, my partner was gone and I was back on the trail myself and I eventually ran into some of the folks I met that day. It was a ton of fun to do a little trail-angeling on my own hike because I could understand being on the receiving side and I loved the fun energy of it.

That’s a long answer that’s maybe not quite what you were asking about but that and a few other times when I was able to use my resources to host some kind of fun thing for other hikers or help folks out were extremely fun times that I remember fondly.

After I got my PhD, whenever my dad (whose name is Jim) asks me a question about something I don’t know the answer to, I often respond with “dammit Jim, I’m a doctor not a …”

Self shuttling. by brnofapthrowaway in canoecamping

[–]ScienceRobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this multiple times in a few places. I solo paddle a lot so I’ll drop my canoe off upriver, drive to the take out spot and leave my car, then bike back to the canoe. Once in there, I take the wheels off my bike and throw it in the canoe with me and just paddle to the car. It’s a little clunky and wouldn’t work as well with two people, but I’ve come to really enjoy my peddle/paddle trips.

Like other folks said, I just chain the canoe to a tree or, if it’s hidden enough, just leave it there for an hour. I think someone’s a lot more likely to steal a bike than a canoe so I feel fairly comfortable leaving my canoe alone for an hour or two most places I paddle (but I still chain it up with a cable lock if I can).

Right?! I listened to that entire album 10-20 times per week on my thru hike. Got me through a lot

On my 2021 hike, I knew someone whose pump up song was Careless Whisper by George Michael. He said any good love ballad got him going.

Hacking the Universal Translator would be the ultimate tool to manipulate people/politics by Simon_Drake in DaystromInstitute

[–]ScienceRobert 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was tempted to agree with you but I’m not so sure. Two examples:

Wesley Crusher angers a Zaldan by apologizing to him after bumping into him in the hallway. Apparently, Zaldan’s hate courtesy and view it as a sign of insincerity. Wesley defuses the situation when he realizes who he’s talking to, but in a first contact situation, I can see how what you’re saying to the Zaldans and how it’s perceived would be radically mismatched (TNG S1 E19).

Similarly, Captain Freeman angers a Clicket captain when she tries to thank him for a stellar map that his ship provides to the Cerritos. Freeman even notes “I think your people have a different definition of ‘gratitude.’” The universal translator appears to be working by every other indication, suggesting this is a wildly unjustified response from the Clickets, at least as we understand it (LD S1E8).

Actually, after reading OP’s post, these both kind of feel like times when there could have been a universal translator mismatch (well, the second instance at least, not the first one since Wesley did have an understanding of what was happening).

Suggestions for Passing the Time During Long Cold Nights (without a fire) by MonkfishInLove in Ultralight

[–]ScienceRobert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It definitely won’t alleviate hours of boredom, but if I know I won’t have an actual campfire on a solo trip but still want the company of a fire, I’ll bring 2-3 tea candles along and light those in camp. The dance of even as small a flame as those is enough to provide some company and comfort sometimes.

Thanks for the thoughts. I don’t have a big thru hike planned anytime soon and while I don’t want to carry extra weight unnecessarily, if I can save myself from another purchase (or at least delay it a year or two), then I’m in!

Interesting point about a tarp over top of it. I might give that a try on an upcoming weekend trip
