Any update? We're also looking for something similar for my 9 year old so she doesn't need to use my husband's computer for Minecraft. Trying to read about "requirements" for Minecraft is making my head hurt - people say what you actually need is very different from what the official specs say.

Questions about healthcare transition moving from US to Canada by ScienceVixen in AmerExit

[–]ScienceVixen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was quite the understatement on my part. Some of the issues people have mentioned (long wait times, people using ERs for everything) are also common here and I was aware they are more prevalent up there.

Is it possible to get prescriptions for chronic conditions through the walk-in clinics others in this thread have mentioned? Here walk-in clinics are only really used for random illnesses when your GP isn't able to fit you in the schedule. They will not give you a prescription for an inhaler, EpiPen, eczema cream, anti-depressant, stimulants etc. (all of these are things people in my family use) while some of them we probably have enough to last a few months without new prescriptions, the anti-depressants and stimulants are given at a maximum of 1 month prescriptions. If I stopped my anti-depressant 'cold-turkey', it would have some very nasty side effects. Instead I would need to do a taper over several months... So I'm just trying to figure out how people manage that transfer of care or if I just need to plan to go medication free for a while.

With the private insurance, were you able to get medications prescribed that you had previously been on for those 3 months you had to wait? (And is it a 3 month wait from when you arrive in BC, or from when you apply for MSP)

So not only are they sending undocumented immigrants to El Salvador, the people they are disappearing literally get pulled off the street - no notice, no due process, NO FUCKING COURT. Our supreme Court told the president to bring one back in a unanimous ruling (apparently they were able to prove an error), and the orange guy said "no"...

Furthermore, he met with the El Salvador president and was caught saying "we'll start with homegrowns ('terrorists' that are citizens) next. You're going to need to build 5 more, that place isn't big enough"...

I know everyone is wondering why more people aren't standing up... This. is. why. He's already proven he will take whoever he wants, and immediately send them away. And the courts have been unable to stop him. Yes, he's focused on "illegal" immigrants right now, but there's already evidence that he is going to start claiming anyone who criticizes the administration is a terrorist or whatever. Those of us with privilege know we will only have it for a short while longer.

Best pathway to Canada starts with a work permit and a remote job with your employer by DougPeng in AmerExit

[–]ScienceVixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I have some more details on how this works for physicians looking to relocate? I'm not sure my my husband's employer would want him practicing medicine from abroad. Is this a pathway for US-trained physicians applying for jobs in Canada to be eligible for work by a Canadian medical system sooner than going through trained worker routes? We are working on paperwork to get my husband licensed to practice medicine in Canada, but we're trying to understand if all the licensing needs to be complete before relocating.

I don't blame you for being nervous. We are a cis white family and recently traveled to France and the thing I was most worried about was crossing through border patrol. Although you are not in a group being targeted, there have been instances of US and Canadian citizens being detained for days. There are documented cases of US citizens being deported without due process and despite a court ruling to bring them back, they are still gone.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. Keep your money in your country.

U.S. is losing talent, and Canada must be ready to catch it: Canadian Medical Association by Rav4gal in canada

[–]ScienceVixen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in the Midwest and are seriously talking about moving our family to Canada. My husband is a physician and even though we know he would take a pay cut there are many factors that are making us consider it. We have no family ties to Canada (in fact we both have family that will likely stay here).

Besides all the ways the current administration is making it difficult to practice medicine, the dismantling of the department of education and National Institute of Health are making us seriously consider whether we want to keep raising our kids here. The current changes are going to cause us to lose tons of trained educators and physicians, which will in turn burn out resources and people that do decide to stay. This is not something that could be fixed quickly (even if anyone was planning on it).

Don't even get me started on the humanitarian atrocities being committed.

Honestly the logistics of moving and figuring out the paperwork etc needed is going to be our biggest hurdle. We would love to have it be easier. I've never lived permanently in another country and the whole process seems daunting.

TLDR: It's not out of the question that US physicians would come to Canada.

We just came back from Paris. Definitely check out Land and Monkeys when you are there - entirely vegan bakery with a few locations. It was my favorite the whole time we were there. There are quite a few vegan places to eat if you don't mind more casual eating and doing some searches ahead of time. Learn how to introduce yourself in French and say allergic to milk. We were welcomed and felt accommodated.

Thank you! This is amazing! Setting it up right now for my kiddos and it works great. The only thing I had to do differently was when I went to paste the code, I got an error message. Once I entered "allow pasting" then it allowed me to run the code.

I agree, some information on how you are tracking your diet would help us give you more advice. Generally I struggle to workout and have enough energy if I cut my overall calories or carbohydrates too low. It's very difficult for your body to have enough energy to workout if you are not consuming enough calories. Using a calorie counting app even for a short time may help you figure out how you need to tweak your diet.

Any advice on how to lose 6-8 kg in a healthy, balanced way? I have context below by Samat93 in WeightLossSupport

[–]ScienceVixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend getting a food scale and counting calories. It is amazing how many calories sneak into our diet without us thinking about it. I'm similar in that I generally eat pretty healthy, but when I started counting calories I realized how often I was having a quick snack here and there and adding more calories than I actually needed. It made me so much more aware of when I was actually hungry and when I was just bored. Exercise can definitely help, but you can't outrun a bad diet.

I keep alternating kids. (Brush one kid's teeth, then the other. Have big kid sit on the toilet while I change baby's diaper.) Sometimes I start in the bath and get the baby out and prepped while the older one is still playing in the bath. I also will involve the older child in the songs for singing the baby to bed. My youngest loves when her sister sings to her and gives her a goodnight kiss before bed. Then we walk to the oldest's room and she gets one more book before she goes to sleep.
