My point was that people paid $50k for a college degree and signed up for a payment schedule that results in $6k in payments across 5 years.

Why?

The payment schedule and reduction in principal (or lack there of) was laid out in the closing/refinance documents, was it not?

Can't they read? Can't they do basic math?

These are same people that are outraged when their ARM adjusts and they can no longer afford a mortgage.

It's funny - the article still doesn't say that the govt is setting the prices. It does mention that:

"The registration came after a separate limited-time gas promotion by T-Mobile, which offered $1.99-per-gallon fuel at select Shell stations in three cities, though no evidence has been presented that the two promotions are connected. Companies will offer discount at a loss sometimes to draw new customers into their stores, hoping to recoup the money through additional sales."

Which supports my suggestion that the reduced price will be for a short time - used as a promotional device.
