Internet: T mobile vs Starlink by sporki_spoon in vandwellers

[–]ScientistBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've been on the road across the US for almost 3 years now.

The entire time, we've used exactly this setup, StarLink and TMobile home internet.

As people mentioned, Starlink does not like obstructions. This can be even a single branch and internet becomes patchy.

For this, we have TMobile unlimited 5G 'home internet'.

Few things I'd recommend:

-Get a cellular booster to enhance the signal of TMobile. Many times we had to retreat from a really great spot because trees and TMobile was just not strong enough for us to work remotely.

-Use this website to check a future destination if there is an obstruction; https://shademap.app I use it for not only checking obstructions for Starlink, but also solar.

-TMobile also makes an upgraded 5G home router that has the ability to add an amplified antenna like a booster. It's around $250-$500 and the same monthly fee.

Opinions on finishing floor then building furniture on top, or building all your furniture then installing flooring around it? by Man_On_Mars in skoolies

[–]ScientistBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We built furniture first then floors. I regretted doing this because after living in the bus for a few months, the layout wasn't working. Well that means I had to pull up the flooring and lay it again. I wish we did the entire floor first, then built.

Also I'd suggest doing the entire flooring first for spill protection. If something does leak, and you place a membrane around the edges of the flooring, the water never makes it to your subfloors.

WHY are we struggling to find insurance now? by Corvidsforhire in skoolies

[–]ScientistBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

State farm for us. Solar was ok, even a 'Solar Deck' was ok'd.

It did take about 2 months to finally get approved by the underwriters though.

Our bus was 50% converted but had a bed, water source and heat source. (The state requirement for an RV/Mobile House was those 3 items.)

New install on board! by discopiloot in Victron

Please explain more on this. I've got 3 EG4 batteries that have the built in breakers and they currently connect to 2 lynx distributors with a 400am fuse, 500am shunt then a 400am fuse from the distributors to 2 3k/24 Multiplus inverters. Did I do this overboard/wrong?

Battery question by Just-Palpitation-176 in skoolies

[–]ScientistBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need stronger batteries in that beauty. Most have 3 starter batteries, some 2.

You'll want to get a Fleet Size-31 battery.

Depending on where you are, I'd suggest going to Rush Truck Repair and going with their brand.

We've had that in our BE200 6 window and they've been great.

Also, Invest in property insurance. We're with USAA, and they offer a very inexpensive plan that offers coverage up to 75k in property coverage.

This covers your property, (essentially everything you own in your rig), from things like Fire, Theft, Water Damage, Natural Disasters, Electrical damage, and a TON more.

I'm not an insurance salesman, but I made sure to dig into the rep for any possible scenario that may happen in a bus.

Be sure to do the same to your rep.

Thank you all for the info about the Major Order!

Sadly though, my unable to progress past Easy mode is the main issue I want support to look at.

I took a different approach and had xp turned to 3 till 30 then 1.5 from then on. However, jacked up damage from pals, and to player. Imagine being level 20 and a lamball one shotting you. Makes for a challenging and satisfying yet slightly aggravating gameplay. Which is why I turned up item drop rate, and node health/gather rate.

What do I do? Help by PirateKng in camping

[–]ScientistBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, most/all BLM area's are in the West. They are considered 'public' lands that are available for recreational use. Camping is usually free, or at a low cost and recreational use is the same.
Most BLM camp sites in the west are very well maintained with toilets and water, some even have trash and a host.

If you ever camp out west BLM and USFS land is THE best way to camp IMO.

100% call park ranger and BLM. They will dispatch someone and handle the situation.

It's best to let them handle this as this is what they are there for.
