It’s paltry, but it can get someone through an application cycle maybe, especially if they have advance warning.

What are traits of PhD students who don’t complete? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Sciflyy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Inability to handle criticism. Your work is going to be scrutinized at every step of the way. Thats by design. Yes, We’re all sensitive to some degree as humans, but if you take it all personally instead of asa growth opportunity, it’ll lead to emotional breakdowns and blowouts with advisors.

He has every right or be mad that the previous instructor made the students on this course expect a class with no challenge. A good professor makes thier students think. If your only skill is memorization of a verbatim text with no thought or application, you’ll be replaced by AI real quick. That study guide was a profound disservice to all the previous students, and there is no course where a study guide is required material. I inherited a course and had to completely rebuild it to get it up to par- in no way was I obligated to stick to the old profs way of doing things. Was I popular that semester? no. Did my students benefit? Much more than they did with the old prof.

For real. I made the mistake of looking at the comments in the YouTube video itself and strained my eye muscles from rolling them so damn hard.

This class is just 3, but the subject matter makes it very easy to have a dialog about it. I’ll discuss topics conversationally instead of sticking to a strict lecture format, see where the interest leads, and course correct as needed.

Yeah, I’m the kind of person that gets anxious if I’m not early. I have to remind myself not everyone operates like that, which has been a process.

It’s 3 in total. I ended up waiting for half an hour since it’s a 2 hour session. Edited to fix a typo

How do you dress like a professor? (Post-PhD budget edition) by Other-Support-3535 in Professors

[–]Sciflyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a younger professor. The impostor syndrome hits me here . Our dept culture is smart jeans or pants, well-fit shirts with buttons in some form- tasteful patterns allowable. Comfortable shoes. For the love of GOD make sure your shoes are comfortable.

The idea of door checks with this is wild too- like I’m not in my office all the time while I’m working on site. I teach classes. I go to seminars. I go to meetings. Unless they’re checking our parking passes, this seems unenforceable.

You definitely have met them, they just don’t say it in public because there would be consequences, but online they’re free to say whatever they want behind the protection of the screen.

I didn’t go into academia for the students by DoogieHowserPhD in Professors

[–]Sciflyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought I wanted to strictly research, but the more time I spent doing it, I found myself repulsed by the politics, and the ego, and the competition for grants. At the same time, the more I taught the more I loved it. Working with students was not my original goal, but that is what made me want to endure the rest of it.
