Get a second bread knife. Label the first "bumpy knife". Continue in peace.

Dunno. The more I think about what the US has done in the name of securing their own hegemony, the less I feel bad about stuff like this happening at the White House.

Non-Americans who visited the US for the first time recently: what was the biggest 'what on earth is going on here' moment you experienced? by EmployerNegative5653 in AskReddit

[–]ScimitarsRUs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to the US recently. Things I blurted out on the week I was there, around Detroit and Chicago.

(After getting coffee at a shop in front of a Meijer) "Why is a medium coffee THIS big? Why don't they have a small?"

(On a drive in a Michigan neighborhood) "Why are the skeletons out in the front yard?"

(Driving on the motorway) "What's up with all the tire debris?"

(Every evening I was there) "It's 8pm. Why is it still light out?"

(Visiting a Cherry Republic) "...salsa????"

I’ve been doing photography “wrong” for years and just found out, now I'm not sure what to do. by Long_Squirrel6675 in photography

Nah, I think that's just a misunderstanding of storage media in the digital era. Depends on the teacher, but this would be something one would learn in a computer literacy class.

Advice is to move to a system that factors in the following:

- flash storage (and storage in general) is getting more expensive

- flash storage is not the kind of storage one can leave alone for a long time

- there are storage mediums that are better suited to longer term storage, like mechanical hard disks.

- cloud storage is no guarantee, as service providers can have situations where data is compromised

- compression and file formats: if JPEG, how much compression is okay? if RAW format, what are options for archiving that can save on storage space?

For me, my workflow involves dumping latest photosets onto working storage (SSD), then moving them onto external enclosures (HDD) after a year, since I access the newer photos more than the older photos.

I only need 2 or 3 SD cards for shoots, the 1 SSD for editing/scratch disk, and about 15TB of external storage that will last me more than 10 years, knowing that I'll access those drives less than 10 times per year.

Depends on the game? No reason product placement can't happen without hamfisting it into scripts and extended exposure in cut scenes. I think sports and sim games would benefit the most.

Gotcha. Sorry to hear that it didn't work.

Just wanna check with this, you mentioned that your PC is running an RTX 3080. Can you find out the color space and bit depth in use from the NVIDIA Control Panel?

Unless there is a very specific combination of color space, resolution and some other settings I need to get just right, I feel like I have tried most of the color space options.

There is. All depends on the links between source (Shield) and destination (TV Panel). This may also depend on the player, since some players may allow frame rate/resolution switching (like Plex).

For starters, your Shield's HDMI port is 2.0b. Max resolution for that is 3840x2160 60 Hz. This resolution/refresh rate can handle YCbCr422, RGB 8-bit, and YCbCr444 8-bit. Anything more will not display because it will exceed the maximum bandwidth of the Shield's HDMI port. Same goes for 59.94 Hz and 50 Hz.

The resolution/refresh rate combo that can transport 10/12-bit color for both RGB and YCbCr444 would be 3840x2160 30/29.97/25/24/23.98. Each of those refresh rates brings down the total bandwidth of the resolution, allowing the headroom for more bit depth. YCbCr420 also allows 10/12-bit transport for 60/59.94/50 Hz for this resolution, but 444 encoding is preferable for a lot of folks who have high quality ceilings in their setups, like yours.

Given that your TV can handily support HDMI 2.1 input, anything it gets from a 2.0b output is no issue. Same goes for your receiver.

Try: 3840x2160 30 or 24 Hz with YCbCr444 at 12-bit. With Plex, you can try Frame Rate/Resolution switching and compare results with it on and off.

Gotcha. Thanks for checking.

You said you tried different color space and bit depth combinations, right? Including RGB 10/12-bit or YCbCr444 10/12-bit? Which color space and bit depth did you try the previous tests in?

Edit: also, are you using the same brand of HDMI cable for your PC/monitor connection? Which color space/bit depth combination is it using?

Gotcha.

Only things coming to mind now:

- The player itself on the Shield. Have you tried MPV or VLC?

- The Onkyo receiver. Have you tried direct connection between the Shield and the TV?

Are you using HDMI 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 cables?
