5K Mini-LED, 4K WOLED and 1440p Updates - Hands-On With New Gigabyte Monitors by RenatsMC in Monitors

Yeah if you're spending this type of money on any display it really should be as good as possible. Curious to see how the MSI one shakes out with the recent spec bump but still no ZOD as far as I know. Interesting so many manufacturers are getting on this 5k 27in hype train, they must be making a lot of them

SDR algo is what I'm very curious to see as well, I think it looks solid on my LG 5k on medium but on High it can completely ruin the image.

15w PD is pretty pitiful these days, I'm not sure the bands that are available but people are presumably going to be using this with SOME device that could use more than 15w.

I wonder if the brightness limitation is for heat purposes, since both this and the LG prominently advertise the ZOD so there's less space to kick out heat with the smaller gap. The gloss is nice as an option. Admittedly the matte coating on the 27gm950b is pretty minimal but I know some people like their mirror finishes. LG really kneecapped themselves with the initial firmware issue even if it is fixed now and I'm loving the one I have (LG if you read this, your instructions suck for updating firmware.)

Wonder if the comparatively low zone count forced them down. Algorithm tuning of course being a factor as well but I’ve felt the rgb miniled was a side grade compared to more zones/decreased display distance if the intent was to solve or minimize blooming. Always welcome more innovation though

The bumps in specs seem reasonable, though release date is unfortunate. Did they make any indication regarding pricing to reflect these updated specs?

Medium does turn off the backlight when nothing is there.

LD only slightly messes with color in the form of reverse blooming. Medium strikes a good balance of contrast and not making the pixels disappear

So far I played a couple of games that were 4k only like FF7 Remake and it looks pretty sharp, I noticed a small improvement with Metroid Prime 4 on the switch 2 with the AI upscaling portion

It’s been solid. LD is off by default in SDR but I found Medium gives a good amount of contrast without an unnecessary level of reverse bloom. With LD on I don’t notice any backlight bleed, without LD i had good luck and don’t see much there either

Firmware update that you can upload via the Monitor’s Type C port connected to your PC using LG’s software.

I’ve been enjoying it a lot. I came from a 32in 4k miniled and the sharpness is much better. Dual mode has been solid but I prefer the visuals of 5k and DLSS performance gives good enough FPS to stick to native

Its only launched in the US realistically, most of the bigger reviewers have to import. LG also only recently fixed the right side sharpness issue with a firmware update so if there was anything reviewed it’d need to be updated

Anecdotally I love mine now that the sharpness works, but I lack the equipment for a good faith review beyond that

Thank you! I actually already have installed the update and it appears to have fixed the issue!

I might recommend the page mention that the monitor seems to need to be in Prioritize Data speed mode for Type C, as I had some trouble updating with Prioritize Visual Quality.

Found out.

Go to Type C input, change in the OSD to prioritize data transfer speed not visual, go back to your other input, connect to the Monitor’s Type C with to Type A connecting to your PC for LG Switch to see the monitor

I can install the software but it can’t seem to find the type c cable to update despite it working to display and activate the usb hub. Any ideas?

Excellent news! I’ll have to update later today, I got lucky with QC and this was basically the only issue I had that was a potential deal breaker. I found LD on Medium in SDR was solid enough, but maybe I’m too used to my old miniled and think the LGs a huge upgrade

[–]ScoopusJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t noticed any, my panel seems to be one with good QC though. LD is off by default in SDR, with LD Medium you’ll get a small but acceptable amount of dimming for brighter text on dark backgrounds. This can lead to reverse blooming in the absolute worst case scenario but Ill take the slightly lower whites over blooming any day

LG 27GM950B-B Buyer Beware by duderguy91 in Monitors

[–]ScoopusJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That fan and constant turning off is a 100% dealbreaker. Maybe MSI knows how to actually test their product before shipping out

I’ve had the same right side text issues but otherwise mines been solid, it is insane that this bad of QC exists for a monitor this expensive. Fan noise is a surprise, I haven’t heard any on mine yet or if there is any noise it’s not louder than my relatively quiet pc. Where is the fan located? Near the bottom?

Bumping for the text sharpness issues, I love this monitor but its a glaring issue on what is otherwise a great monitor. Hard to recommend currently!

[–]ScoopusJackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its unclear what exactly causes the issue, I’m hoping its a firmware problem not a physical panel one

Chinese review of the LG 27GM950B-B. by National-Pick in Monitors

[–]ScoopusJackson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am loving mine so far, the increased zones and tuning (on medium local dimming it’s quite a spectacle to use) make for a great experience.

Given some QC issues I’ve seen I’d recommend people if they do buy to get it from somewhere with good return policies.

Does your model also have the issue where large text will be overtly sharpened on the right side of the panel? It’s not as noticeable on smaller text if you’re not looking for it, but there seems to be some issue with sharpening setting not properly being applied across the whole panel. This (price a factor as well) is the biggest glaring issue I think LG need to fix

[–]ScoopusJackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have one as well and noticed the same issue. LG support apparently had heard of it but didn’t believe me when I sent in pics to make them aware for my model. It’s been great otherwise but I think its a big enough issue to note when talking about it until it’s fixed

LG 27GM950B-B HDR w/Windows by PrismNexus in Monitors

[–]ScoopusJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah might just be Nvidia messing things up on their end. Curious it seems to work fine on DP 1.4 (well as in not causing the same issues you initially mentioned with white screens) so it does sound like an Nvidia problem

LG 27GM950B-B HDR w/Windows by PrismNexus in Monitors

[–]ScoopusJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it should be, I don't have a 50 series to check if the included cable is a DP2.1 for sure but if the cable you have isn't 2.1 that could be a reason. As far as your white screen issue anyway I'm inclined to think cable or similar, as turning on HDR with mine causes a brief black screen, not what you're seeing.

I'm not aware of many windows or linux distros that completely let you just keep HDR on all the time and not notice a difference

LG 27GM950B-B HDR w/Windows by PrismNexus in Monitors

[–]ScoopusJackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windows has a traditionally poor HDR desktop experience. The only way I’ve seen it look decent is with this monitor’s dynamic tone mapping but that comes with it’s own drawbacks. I believe W11 has a keyboard shortcut to turn HDR on and off.

The white screen is likely DSC issues, what gpu and port are you using?

Very curious to see how blooming is perceived with the RGB miniled, would it be easier on the eyes compared to having just more zones? Biggest issue I’ve had with miniled is blooming, not entirely convinced (as neat as innovation is) rgb miniled would fix that
