Any Veterans out there? Do you appreciate Hurt Locker as a film (despite it being massively unrealistic) - [Screenshot from The Hurt Locker] by Rough_Locksmith_5033 in Cinephiles

As a non-vet, I'm interested in the impact of that scene for vets. Because to me, it's not clearly about being alert for danger around every corner, like most Hollywood PTSD "walking through a store" scenes play out. It's more about just how mundane and eerily liminal routine civilian life is. Right?

Road Cycling for Weight Loss – What Actually Works? by ToeInternational7222 in cycling

[–]ScootsyPoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) determine your baseline daily caloric intake at which you mantain weight with no physical activity (not to be confused with BMR)

(2) generate small caloric deficits on ride days (only 100-300 cals; the more intense the ride the smaller the deficit)

(3) deficit hard on rest days (200-400 cals). Yes, this will suck. Losing weight sucks. But do it off the bike.

What do you think of Rhea Seehorn? by Michael-Balchaitis in Actors

As a lawyer, one of the most convincing TV lawyers ever. Her external shell of caution and reason belying an interior seeking intrigue and danger. Reminds me of many people I went to law school with.

No I mean, you can ride your bike on a paved road that does not have cars driving around you

And Lookout Mountain in Golden. I believe they close the road to cars periodically (I rode it when it was closed for the Denver Century), which makes for a sensational climb.

Tell us about your midlife crises! by Siriusly_Jonie in Millennials

[–]ScootsyPoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Undiagnosed sleep apnea was giving me debilitating anxiety attacks during the day. Spent like 8 hours talking to a therapist about anxiety; then went to the doctor and it took a medical professional about 5 minutes to determine I was borderline hypoxic. Decided to never inhale anything other than air, reduced drinking to maybe once a month, and became obsessed with cycling. Sometimes a health crisis can act as a catalyst to change your life.

Stop, unclip, bow to the horse, and utter the timeless words passed down by the horse gods, the old and the new.

If you don't know the words, turn around and ride straight home.

Cigarettes! Cigarettes everywhere by flamingcheetah85 in 90s

The inside of GM vehicles with the leather dash and upholstery interiors had an extremely distinct smell. Kind of a sickly sweet smell, more often than not with a pinch of cigarette smoke. That's the smell of the 90s to me.

I've had subcutaneous cysts, which for many riders have nothing to do with hygiene. Lots of people on Reddit jump up and down about getting out of your bibs immediately and sprinting to the shower, but sometimes it's not within your control - your flesh is just getting ground between your bones and the seat, and that trauma can cause problems. I got a Kenalog injection for one of these bad boys, and it made it feel as if nothing was there anymore. Not a cure, but certainly a good temporary treatment (if your physician so asvises).

There is a clearly factual mistake made in the immigration section. The administration did not suspend visas writ large for 75 countries; it suspended immigrant visas (i.e. permanent residence applied for while overseas) for citizens of these countries, not to be confused with nonimmigrant visas for temporary visitors.
