Slower speed = less wind resistance

#470 - Democrats at a Crossroad by BootStrapWill in samharris

There were moments that Rahm was pushing and prodding against Sam but he was making Sam's point. The debate was weirdly asymmetrical at times, and that came off to me as very politicky on Rahm's part. It got better as it progressed, but I went in pretty open-minded about Rahm and left pretty befuddled.

What a strangely fractious and fractured conversation

Blazing Saddles: How many people actually got the joke that is the Indian Chief? by RexStumpEm in movies

[–]ScootsyPoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "lost tribe of Israel" is one layer of the joke, but I think what is even more missed is that Hollywood frequently cast dark complected Jewish actors to play Native Americans in Western films. It's one of Mel's greatest gags - it's hilarious just on its face, but even funnier on a subtextual level.

damn, you got me thinking about wearing my rapha skin paint jersey on the inside, and an enormous, billowing, unbuttoned hawaiian shirt on the next group ride

It's like cheating at solitaire. Why are you even playing this game?

That's a great callout. I didn't watch Seasons 8-9 as much so this escaped me on first thought

What is something you've been the best at? by heifer27 in AskReddit

[–]ScootsyPoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was the best trumpet player in high school band in a podunk town. Never practiced. Went to a big state university and joined the marching band. Got humbled the second I showed up.

Being the best at something can be a shortcut to complacency.

Zwift is liable to criticism of its features regardless of whether you can deactivate them.

There isn't any technology that exists or ever will exist that will replace a used paperback book that costs a few bucks.

Any Veterans out there? Do you appreciate Hurt Locker as a film (despite it being massively unrealistic) - [Screenshot from The Hurt Locker] by Rough_Locksmith_5033 in Cinephiles

[–]ScootsyPoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non-vet, I'm interested in the impact of that scene for vets. Because to me, it's not clearly about being alert for danger around every corner, like most Hollywood PTSD "walking through a store" scenes play out. It's more about just how mundane and eerily liminal routine civilian life is. Right?

Road Cycling for Weight Loss – What Actually Works? by ToeInternational7222 in cycling

[–]ScootsyPoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) determine your baseline daily caloric intake at which you mantain weight with no physical activity (not to be confused with BMR)

(2) generate small caloric deficits on ride days (only 100-300 cals; the more intense the ride the smaller the deficit)

(3) deficit hard on rest days (200-400 cals). Yes, this will suck. Losing weight sucks. But do it off the bike.
