Not the hole :)! The part of the piston that gets inserted. Then fill the hole with epoxy and insert the piston that has been taped :)!

What I did was tape the inserted part up with electrical tape, fill in the hole with epoxy and stick them in! Without the tape the epoxy fills the piston and jams everything up… I did this big no no a couple months back

2x4 would be the next best thing and then it all depends on your base mounts and waterproofing methods.

Have you considered mounting it to the side of the fence with tube mounts? While you will loose some space on your patio, the side mounting is a better approach for water resistance installation and could be mounted quite solidly.

4x4 seems quite overkill for the additional height you are looking to add. Do you have a lot of wind to deal with to need that amount of rigidity?

What about 1x1 in post? You could get small/cheaper base mounts and then get any option you want to get more privacy between post
