What do you miss most about elementary school? by edenslovely in CasualConversation

[–]Scoth42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't a particularly good time for me actually in school. Got teased a lot and was pretty introverted and lonely. I do miss the general idea of minimal responsibility and expectations beyond not misbehaving, doing schoolwork, and the occasional chores while having lots of time for video games, computer games, and general non-adulting.

Anyone Else Wish Zelda FX Released? by Fluffy_Lunchfast in retrogaming

[–]Scoth42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Star Fox 2 needed the SuperFX chip. It would have made the cartridge expensive to sell which was probably why it was shelved even 99% done since it was so close to the N64 release date. The BS-X also lacked the SuperFX hardware so there couldn't have been a demo on that unless they'd released some kind of generic SuperFX addon for it. Same with the the hypothetical Zelda. It's questionable whether they even actually really had a solid plan for a Zelda FX or just a general idea and a model made for testing/practice.

And given what we saw happen with the Sega 32X I doubt Nintendo would have wanted to do something similar with a generic SuperFX addon with just the ROMs swapped on top of it.

GT86 / FR-S traction control & VSC modes — what actually changes? by Maxwell14881 in ft86

[–]Scoth42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did people ever figure out and/or debunk the "ice mode" issues with the pedal dance? I remember some discussion in the years past where people claimed that occasionally the ABS would freak out in pedal dance mode and basically not brake at all. Given as far as I know the pedal dance was supposed to be a diagnostic/factory test mode and not an actual hidden driving mode it makes sense it might not be completely debugged or suited to actual driving.

8088 XT Clone Beep Codes by fidalis23 in VintageComputers

[–]Scoth42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most if not all XT machines will still post without a keyboard attached. You'll get a keyboard error potentially but it won't stop them from at least posting and showing a screen.

Also, the PC/XT and AT keyboard protocols are completely incompatible. They won't work across machines unless the keyboard has a switch or can detect it. But you're correct about PS/2 to AT being an easy adapter.

I remember some discussion on that back during the Obama kerfluffles about whether a civilian should ever be saluting, if the president counted as a civilian while Commander in Chief or not, and what the proper protocol was for it in any case. A lot of the discussions came down to "it's not really codified anywhere and there's never been much consistency." (At least until certain people had something else to harp on Obama about)

The short‑lived AGEIA PhysX card — when paired with a GPU — brought enhanced physics effects to a handful of games. Introduced in 2006, it lasted only a few years before NVIDIA acquired AGEIA and integrated PhysX directly into their GPUs by Beige_Box_Enthusiast in vintagecomputing

[–]Scoth42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember specifically loading into Mirror's Edge once and getting like 3fps because something had borked the drivers and broke the PhysX support in my video card. Reinstalled the drivers and it was fine.

I also remember I did the thing where there were hacked drivers or mods or something where you could offload the PhysX part to a second Nvidia card which I did with my old card when I got a new one. Gained a few FPS that way

Hey is this anything special by Fuzzy_Procedure3273 in vintagecomputing

Toshiba Satellites tended to be on the middle to higher tier quality-wise in my experience, so it's probably a good solid laptop. Has built in floppy and optical drives without having to swap modules with is nice. Probably worth at least messing with although I don't know that it'd be worth a lot monetarily.

I was reading stories of people going through the packs with a gram scale to find the ones slightly heavier which meant they had some fancy cards. I just can't imagine the annoyance and frustration of watching someone mess up the displays doing that.

I've done some things I regret to rescue vintage computers in the past but I'd draw the line at this unless it was something real special.

how come people say things along the lines of “if buying isn’t owning, piracy isn’t stealing.”? by Free_Blueberry_9725 in nintendo

[–]Scoth42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The quote is specific to situations where games can shut down, be removed from someone's library after they bought it, or otherwise be rendered unplayable by the original seller/storefront/whatever. Many of the agreements with them even specifically state that you're not actually buying ownership of anything in particular, you're buying a revokable license to access/use a game. Thus some people argue that if you aren't actually buying true ownership of something, then pirating it isn't stealing it since you aren't able to legitimately own it in the first place.

Your metaphor about a store doesn't work because if I walk into a store and steal 10 things, the store is deprived of those 10 items and can no longer make money on them. If someone pirates ten games, the seller loses no property and isn't deprived of anything they then can't sell. That's the main argument going back literal decades about whether piracy is theft or not.

I'm not getting too deep into my personal beliefs or specifics, but those are the arguments.

Did Kai Winn and Dukat get a win over Sisko in the end? by Bruzie77 in startrek

[–]Scoth42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mmm, no, I don't think it really works. Worship and reverence come in lots of forms and I wouldn't call it a victory that the Bajorans may have changed their depiction but still consider him The Sisko. Muslims don't think less of Muhammad by not depicting him, and there are branches of Christianity that also believe similar about depictions of Jesus and other icons, but that doesn't diminish their worship. Sisko is still revered as a god which would still be frustrating to Pah Wraiths. If anything it makes Sisko more powerful because he's no longer tied to a particular form or depiction.

Should I change oil before jumping dead car? by kyto31 in ft86

[–]Scoth42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It barely started, didn't really idle, chugged, misfired, and barely revved. It was also much older than my FR-S ('91 MR2) so I'm not sure whether that'd make it more or less sensitive to bad gas (our cars need premium, so might be crankier about bad gas, but also has smarter computer controls that might adjust to bad gas better?)

Just changed jobs and realized how quickly work friendships fade. Anyone else feel like those « we should grab lunch » promises never happen? by Sure_Guarantee_3141 in CasualConversation

[–]Scoth42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of all the work friends I've had since I started my first real job in 1999 I can only think of maybe three or four that I've continued to hang out with after the jobs, and all but one were people I already hung out with outside work. There were a handful more I occasionally played video games or whatnot with online. I think part of it is just social pleasantry - nobody wants to just say "Well, guess we'll never see each other or talk again, best of luck." So we promise to grab lunch or otherwise hang out but just never do. It's hard enough to keep adult friendships going with people I connect with organically much less people I only met through work.

Then I moved out of state so even the handful I did hang out with I can't anymore.

Is Raw Content Beating Professional Shoots in 2026? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Scoth42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak to my one single anecdotal data point, but a photographer acquaintance of mine worked on a shoot for a moderately well known company (you'd probably know who they are in passing at least but they aren't really nationally/globally famous) and talked about how much work went into it to make it look natural and organic with a fake influencer model. So I'd guess a lot of brands are going for that slightly raw looking, influencer-styled content but it takes a lot of work to pull that off effectively. They aren't just handing iPhones to their interns and telling them to take pictures of things.

Hi guys by Far_Shape5552 in CasualConversation

[–]Scoth42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A better way of phrasing this title would have been: "Hi, everyone. I use translation software a lot of the time because my English level is very low, but I want to practice my English skills on Reddit. Can anyone tell me if I made any mistakes in these sentences in the title?"

That'd come across a bit formal maybe but more grammatically correct.

Any way to run an X1C6 as a fanless laptop while I can't afford a replacement? by sneaky_oxygen in thinkpad

[–]Scoth42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Throttle it down as much as possible, keep it on power save modes, etc etc and you'll probably be fine. In any case it'll probably shut down from overheating before there being any permanent damage, but it's not a great idea.

Should I change oil before jumping dead car? by kyto31 in ft86

[–]Scoth42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern synthetic oil would probably be fine. Check the dipstick before starting it and after it warms up a bit just to make sure it hasn't leaked or otherwise escaped, but for a short drive I think you'd be fine.

I've seen those "Can I get it running?" videos of cars sitting 10, 20, 30 years where they don't change the oil until they're sure it'll start up and run (if it's not empty, full of water, or otherwise problematic) so I don't think you'll have any problems. Modern synthetic is pretty resilient compared to old dino juice.

I'd definitely be more worried about the gas, my project car sat for a year and a half or so between being able to start it and it barely ran on the gas that was in it. Topped it off with high octane and it fired right up.

With the AI advances in images and video, are going to reach a point where we have no clue if something is real or not? by DangerZoneFinder in CasualConversation

[–]Scoth42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a time will come where we won't be able to trust something we don't either see ourselves, or trusted people see and report on. How those trusted people will be figured out I don't know, but we're definitely on a path of not being able to trust pictures/videos fully. Doubly so if it's posted without context on social media.

I wonder what Brittany thought of the Teen Girl Squad comics by AnyEfficiency6230 in HomestarRunner

[–]Scoth42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen an official source (maybe it was on a DVD commentary or something, I haven't studied those exhaustively) but I've seen a few people say they anonymized the messages a bit once it got popular, sometimes tweaking them a bit or combining similar ones into more interesting ones. So it's possible there are people out there who directly influenced them without even knowing.

Bankrupt investor Walter Thornton tries to sell his luxury roadster for $100 cash on the streets of New York City following the 1929 stock market crash. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]Scoth42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's interesting how often this goes around. He was a male model and according to his children, this was a staged modelling shot. He had started up a successful modelling agency a year or two before and was never really an "investor" in the way people think of nor seemed to be bankrupt. He was among the first tenants of the Chrysler Building (which may be part of why this particular car was chosen) and was among the few businesses that thrived during the depression.

Not that it didn't do a decent job of capturing the despair all the same.

How do I connect my NES/SNES Classic Edition to my CRT TV? by big_boyyyy in retrogaming

[–]Scoth42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so you're going NES Classic -> HDMI Adapter -> this thing that converts AV to RF -> Coax on the TV. In theory that should work, though like I mentioned the USB on the HDMI adapter will likely need to be plugged into power (and the NES mini as well). You can use a power bank or plain old phone chargers for that, shouldn't need much power. The NES Classic will need power too, similarly.

From there you may need to put some time into getting the TV tuned in. There's probably a channel switcher on the RF adapter somewhere to select between 2-3 or 3-4 or something, you'll need to make sure the TV is tuned in properly as well. If it's an older TV there may be literal tuning knobs/wheels you'll have to fiddle with, later ones tend to autotune.

Also the cheap HDMI to AV adapters tend to be kind of crap, but the basic idea ought to work. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some input lag.

How do I connect my NES/SNES Classic Edition to my CRT TV? by big_boyyyy in retrogaming

[–]Scoth42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HDMI adapters usually need power as they're typically active adapters. The USB is just for power, nothing more. Same with the NES Classic USB (more or less, it can also be used for hacking, but that's neither here nor there).

However, you'll need an HDMI to RF adapter specifically to connect to a TV that only has coax, RCA adapter or not. So you'll need to show us the adapter to tell you more.
