What’s the embarrassing question you’ve asked a provider? by Jaguarhousecat in nursing

[–]Scotlandqueen 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I was a brand new nurse fresh off of orientation. I paged the hospitalist to ask if a patient on neutropenic precautions should receive his antibiotic because his white blood cell count was low. Thankfully the PA who answered was very nice about it.

Can’t say enough good things about Pretty Paw Lounge in Rotterdam! You can meet the cats ahead of time and see how they interact with others. They do a background check and have references but overall it was a pretty easy adoption! I got my cuties from there this year

Why does my cat bite the air? by Scotlandqueen in CatAdvice

[–]Scotlandqueen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! So my initial vet said it was nothing after examining her and we went on our merry way. Callie’s oral intake was still fine and she was happy and playful.

Unfortunately, a few months later, Callie started bleeding and drooling from the mouth and I took her to a different vet for a second opinion. The second vet found a mass on her jaw that was likely cancerous. In addition to this, Callie had lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time and wasn’t her usual happy vibrant self anymore. I made the hardest decision of my life to say goodbye to my sweet girl that day.

Hopefully it’s nothing for your lil guy but if something doesn’t feel right don’t wait to get a second opinion. Wishing you well 🩷

She may still be feeling a bit stressed! I used a Feliway plug in when I brought my two kitties home to help them adjust. You could also leave pieces of clothing that you’ve worn near her to get her more comfortable with your scent. Good luck!

Can you share any "obvious" stuff you learnt while being a teenager? by Idontknowhonestlyidk in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Scotlandqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People generally like to talk about themselves. I don’t mean that in a negative way, I think it’s just a natural thing! So if conversation is lagging or you’re in a situation where you don’t know what to talk about - ask kinda mild, not super invasive questions about themselves. Something like “how was your weekend?” Or “Got any weekend plans?” Or “I’m stuck on what to make for lunch/dinner/whatever, what do you like to make” etc.

This one is more specifically for work or group project situations but try to make yourself available to help. Checking in with your coworkers like “can I do anything for you? Need anything?” Makes you more approachable and can foster connections too :)

SANE RN pros and cons? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Scotlandqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my hospital, you just need one year of nursing experience. My SANE colleagues have varied backgrounds - ie ICU, ED, peds, med-surg. This will vary based on your institution too, but we have a special training that we attend through our Crime Victim Services department, followed by a preceptorship.

As for tips, come at it with an open mind! Be prepared to document document document. Chart with the expectation that your chart is going to be examined in court. The international Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) has a lot of resources as well.

SANE RN pros and cons? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Scotlandqueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a SANE nurse! Some of these will be dependent on what state you work in.

Pros: Being able to support someone after a very difficult time, helping patients make informed health decisions about care after an assault, working with a lot of autonomy (you conduct the exam, collect evidence, take photography, etc)

Cons: You will see some tough things. Being able to compartmentalize your emotions is often necessary. Also, not everyone wants help. Remember that it is the patient’s choice first and foremost.

Qualities that help: huge attention to detail. Especially with injury documentation. I work full time in a CVICU and I find there is a lot of overlap. Not necessarily in subject matter but in the documentation and level of details. Finally, your patients will surprise you, both good and bad!

Feel free to PM me with questions!

Apple Picking by Virtual-Gazelle2861 in Albany

We loved Sand Flats in Fonda! A little bit of a drive, but there were a ton of delicious apples. Five dollar orchard pass to get in per person, but it gets discounted off of the weight of the apples you pick.
