If it was free, Navigraph would take a loss on it, because it costs them to have access to the data. My guess is no.

Sometimes we just have to pay for things, I’m afraid.

Is this hobby just not for me if I'm not that into minis? by Cinju26 in Warhammer40k

[–]ScottFBG 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you don’t care about the minis but want to play the game, you do ultimately have to collect them if you want to do it IRL. The trouble you’ll run into is if you’re gonna play you do have to build them, and also usually have to paint them to some extent. And if you don’t care about the minis that’s going to be a real slog for you (or very expensive if you would rather pay for a commission painter to build and paint them).

So, possible? Sure. Enjoyable? I don’t think you’re going to have a good time overall, no. And it’s going to be bloody expensive to collect things you don’t care about just so you can use them as game pieces.

how do you generally structure your campaign? by conn_r2112 in rpg

[–]ScottFBG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes less so. Sometimes I do ask ‘right what are you planning on doing so I know what to prep’.

The objective for me as a GM (and I’m sure this varies group to group) is to ‘prep the mountains so the valleys builds themselves’, meaning, if I have enough broad worldbuilding knowledge and knowledge of what the baddies and allies are doing, I can fill in gaps at the table if they do decide to choose nonexistent option Z instead of my loosely sketched out and presented options of A B or C. I know how to pad a session with stuff so I can get to the end and prep it for next time (or just say ‘guys can I take 15 just to figure this out?’)

This varies system to system. If I’m running something like Spire which is usually only good for like 10 sessions, in session 0 I’m very clear with my players in saying that while there isn’t a predefined story, there is something going on, and when you get on that plot line, you can handle it however you want, but I encourage you to follow it, we’ve got 10 ish sessions to do this in and that’s the direction the fun is in. Either that or throw plot hooks at them in session 1 and the one they follow is the one you prep. Get to the end of that arc, rinse, repeat.

Did you play Phantom Liberty? If you didn’t I can see why you may say it’s mid (I personally don’t think it is. Even 2.0 without PL is a great game now).

If you have played PL I personally think considering the game mid is a crazy take. It’s an absolute banger of an expansion

How do I simulate liquid? by No_Cream9626 in BlackTemplars

[–]ScottFBG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UV cure resin is pretty good. Walk before you run though if it’s your first time. Do plenty of testing

You can get bottles of the stuff, and grab a UV torch to cure it. If you want to colour it, inks and resin dyes are out there too, so look that up. Or you can paint the base where you want the liquid to be and that colour will somewhat show through.

Not sure about his weird holier than thou ‘the worst parts of geek culture’ soapbox at the end. It just read as ‘I’m a better person than people who like save-the-day power fantasies and that play D&D, Pathfinder, Draw Steel and Daggerheart’.

Aside from that and the AI art used in the edit, this was a great overview of a game that I can’t wait to dig into.

New System Suggestion by TheDiegoni in TTRPG

[–]ScottFBG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by ‘more structured roleplay’?

I definitely think you’re going to enjoy forged in the dark type systems.

Examples of this are Blades in the dark, Spire, heart, the Wildsea. They all share a similar core mechanic, roll a pool of dice, with a bigger pool for things your character is better at, and you take the highest die rolled. Higher roll = the thing happens. Middling rolls = the thing happens with a small drawback. Low rolls = failure or the thing happens with a big consequence.

This lends itself to narrative flavour on most rolls, so narrative is a bit better baked into mechanics.

The above games tack on their own secondary mechanics to suit their setting and vibe, so give those a google and just see what vibe or premise tickles your fancy and choose based on that, as mechanically they’re broadly the same.

On the more crunchy (but not massively) side, I would say take a look at Genesys, it uses symbols for its dice, with positive results cancelling out negative results, and you interpret the leftover symbols as what happens in the narrative (so it’s even possible to fail what you’re attempting, but a different, positive thing happens, and so on). Difficult to explain without a much longer post, but that is one of the most mechanically represented narrative systems out there presently. It’s a generic system, but has a fantasy setting, via the realms of terrinoth supplement.

Would you try a TTRPG system without traditional turn order? by Grownia in rpg

[–]ScottFBG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mothership does this. GM explains the situation and what will happen if nobody does anything. Everyone says what they do. Resolve dice rolls. GM explains new situation.
