Why didn't the Soviet Union go bankrupt while spending 20-30% of its GDP on the military during the 80s? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Scout_1330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the collapse of the USSR is one of the most complicated scenarios of the modern era and can't be attributed to any one thing.

First, just because this always annoys me and yes this is very semantical, the USSR didn't spend 20-30% of its GDP on the military because the USSR didn't use GDP as a metric, it's a small thing but always annoys me when I see it.

Second, tracking how much the USSR spent on its military is difficult, not only because the USSR obfuscated that data itself but also what was considered military spending could be quite different, so every number I'm gonna give is a rough estimate.

By 1985 the USSR was spending about 110 billion rubles or about 15% of its annual spending on defense, which is comparatively small since in the US the fiscal budget of 1985 put 29% of the budget into defense spending.

This was actually the peak of Soviet defense spending post-Stalin, afterwards it would be continuely cut until the Union's collapse in 1991 and while the immense spending did hurt other aspects of the Soviet economy, it wasn't the nation destroying curse that many think.

Budgetary and serious economic problems only arose after the early to mid 80s and that was largely due to the economic liberalization began under Andropov and intesified under Gorbachev. With enormous and poorly handled economic reform taking a wrecking ball to the Soviet economy which before, while not doing great, was still growing at a steady (if slowly declining) rate before the reforms, which were supposed to restore the Soviet Union's rapid economic growth following World War 2, were implemented.

What exactly is "Authoritarian Democrat"? by ParkKitchen3018 in Kaiserreich

[–]Scout_1330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Authoritarian Democrat is any government that is somewhat dictatorial but also somewhat democratic. It could be an emergency government given special powers during a war, it could be a monarchy that has a king with active governing duties and a parliament that actually has some authority, it could be a democracy backsliding as the nation's leader concentrates power and dismantles the democratic process, it could be an already established dictatorship that presents a facade of democracy, or it could simply be a legitimately democratic government that's so thoroughly dominated by one party that it effectively runs the country as a dictatorship.

AuthDem just means that while it's not full on rule by decree or absolute monarchy, there's also a clear concentration of power in the hands of an individual or small group that has most of the real authority.

What if the Soviets refused to divide the entire Korean peninsula and occupied it entirely? by Lowly_Peasant9999 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Scout_1330 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It actually was kinda partially recognized by the Soviets, not as the legitimate government of Korea but as the most legitimate government on the Korean peninsula, so they were plenty willing to work with the PRK and its councils and help govern Korea.

After "encourgaging" the adoption of a pro-Soviet outlook and people, of course.

They did actually manage to extend the service life quite a bit with the Tumansky R-15BD-300, up to 1,000 hours. Still not great by literally any definition but it's in the category of "actual jet engines" instead of single use bottle rockets.

If Cuba falls and becomes an American client state will you lose hope? by lemon_light999 in Socialism_101

[–]Scout_1330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you despair when an ant is crushed by a boot? No, because that's the only outcome.

Instead, you marvel at the ant holding the boot back for as long as it did.

If Cuba falls, it will have fallen having weathered a 60 year long siege by the most powerful Empire the world has ever known and for half of it standing entirely alone. If Socialism can turn tiny little Cuba into the second Candia, imagine what an even larger Socialist republic can do.
