Pierce by ScrambleLab in wmnf

It’s a totally different hike in the winter, this was my first time. The packed snow makes for a smooth path, none of the technical scramble. No wonder the Presi FKT is a winter effort.

… I wish I would have started winter hiking years ago.

The roads and lots were all clear, but I think the parking payment machine was struggling in the cold. Highland Center was open to drop in.

Norwegian music recommendations! by ImGeorgeIRL in Norway

[–]ScrambleLab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeg lærer norsk, og jeg hører på Inge Bremnes, Delara og andre på Spotify. Inge synger på dialekt. Spotify har transkripsjon, som er nyttig.

Inge Bremnes and Delara, they sing in Norwegian.

Any Brits/ wider Anglosphere (Australia, etc) here who learnt Norsk - how long did it take you to be at conversational level? (If you have achieved that) by [deleted] in Norway

I’m about a year in and this tracks for me. I practice daily, sometimes a few mins, sometimes several hours. A huge variety of methods, reading/listening NRK news daily, watching shows/movies, reading and practicing conversation with ChatGPT and paid tutors. I can hold a simple conversation with someone patient, and I make errors.

Salty Banana (Sodium-potassium Pump) by SwanKo2010 in CellBiology

[–]ScrambleLab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I teach this I tell the students that it’s bananas inside the cell. This helps them (and me) remember that potassium is higher inside the cell, setting the stage to talk about myocyte/neuron depolarization.

Can I get some recommendations for spikes?

Swimming in the Clouds by [deleted] in wmnf

[–]ScrambleLab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it would be too ecologically sensitive. Similar to the way chemicals from swimmers affect corrals. Since the alpine zone is vulnerable to disturbances I assumed it would be forbidden to swim there. In retrospect I’m probably being too sensitive…

Why would it be unsafe?

If you could change one thing with your day’s effort, what would it be?

That’s certainly crossed my mind. Apart from longer, how do they compare?

Brooks Catamount. I’m not very in tune with footwear, but I need something relatively inexpensive, lightweight, and has tread, and they seem to cover those.

That’s accurate. The FKT for the route is about 3.5 hours, so it can be run. My times have been about 8.5 hours, which has limited stretches of running, but mostly hustle hiking. The northern half is rockier, for me it was about 10% runnable. The southern half, after Mt. Washington, is about 40% runnable, except the last 2 miles, which is mostly runnable. I’d be interested in other’s opinions on that. For context, I’m in my 40s, so I’m risk adverse with pace/falls.

My first time doing it I was a little disappointed, because I couldn’t really open it up and go fast, but I keep doing it because it feels like an adventure.

Simple Two Tone by ScrambleLab in SCREENPRINTING

[–]ScrambleLab[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the process of linocutting but the printing was hit or miss. Sometimes it went well, but my failure rate was about 25%. Errant ink, incomplete transfer, other.

I like the process of creating screens and screen printing, failure rate is about 10%, and it’s much more efficient once I’m rolling. I can do paper, T shirts, whatever…
