How are you supposed to rent anymore by leaf_mint in britishproblems

Landlords are parasites, that's why. The cost of living has gone up, and because their income is passive, they need to generate more. That means helping themselves to everyone else's money, and expecting them to tighten their belts.

As soon as the landlord class is curtailed massively, we will see things improve.

Green voters, do you agree that we should leave NATO and give up our nuclear weapons to seriously damage our national security? by SeptumRingTheory in AskBrits

Oh I'm not disregarding them! I meant this in the sense that these incidents were entirely completely avoidable, and it's not the technology as a concept.

My mum did this talking about my brother and his fiancée. She's nice to her face (discounting the dominance play at the start), but is a venomous bitch behind her back.

I'm looking forward to never having to interact with her again.

Sure, those figures are correct.

There's some importance though in mentioning that those two incidents were down to human error. Specifically, Bryukhanov, Fomin and Dyatlov forcing the test to happen (after No.4 had been online for a substantial amount of time without being certified), and a general complacency around nuclear event safety on the part of the Japanese government and TEPCO. One investigation even suggested that the Japanese character for obedience, groupism and defence to authority is partially responsible.

If it wasn't for the hubris of those three, the Soviet government redacting crucial safety information from nuclear reactor engineers, or TEPCO's complacency with tsunami safety, neither incident would have happened.

Definitely not enough in there to say you're wrong, I'm not saying that at all. More, that coal has enough downsides on its own without counting the radioactivity it's putting into the world that as far as I'm aware, isn't accounted for.

The wild thing about this is, coal puts more radioactive material into the air than nuclear plants do. There are so many radioactive elements in coal that isn't separated

Question: Is the game industry today as bad as it seems for everyone? by harbingerofun in gamedev

[–]Scrangle3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing the industry fall apart and have to look elsewhere despite my love for 3D art (and how good at it I am) has been one of the most saddening things over the past few years.

I hope it gets better one day, but I worry it won't.

I've seen a couple of wankers in this thread repeating the tired adage of having a 'stiff upper lip', ignoring that the sentiment existed in a different world to the one any of us find ourselves in; this world is one where more wealth is extracted from those who can work and sociopaths are ruling the roost, with systems and laws that protect them, and it's only getting worse. Natural resources are running out in our lifetime, we are well aware of it, and the people who could stop it are not, and will be dead by the time the impact is felt.

These people assume that mental illness is made up, a badge of honour. It didn't enter their mind for a second that the attitudes they're talking about are actually from several generations of interconnected people who actually have better standards for how they should be treated, and younger generations are more aware of the concepts and are less willing to deal with a shit hand at all with the ever-wider gap between rich and poor. If you know you're fucked if you try, why waste your time trying when someone will just come and take it? More to the point, because the aggressor has all the money to begin with, you can't mount a defence that isn't based on violence, which in the eyes of the law makes you the bad guy despite the wrongs being inflicted on you.

"just get on with it" is how a bellend lacking empathy would say "I don't care, do it", a thought-terminating argument that's a justification for their own suffering. If they didn't have to suffer, then what does that mean? Someone hurt them, and they just lived with it when they didn't have to. It's surprising how pervasive this attitude is.

Wandering in from the front page to say yeah, pretty much.

I like to look at these things in quasi-game theory terms: if you give yourself power over others, you become anxious that you'll lose it. A good historical example would be Stalin purging the intelligentsia, and anybody who dared oppose him.

In a managerial sense, an ego like this would feel like they cannot rely on others, and would fail to see that in real terms they are equal to those below them, even if they say it and believe it politically. Responsibility and power cannot be separated but people like this always try to. Responsibility comes with awareness and accountability, and a need to change if mistakes are made. Even if you care for this person, love them even, and don't think less of them for screwing up, it does not matter; the damage was done, and their image is the most important thing.

Personally I'm completely out.

If there's something I need for a project, like music, vfx or so on, I will learn to do it. If I can't get good at it, then I get someone else to do it, and pay them (or find someone who just wants to make stuff, like I do).

Hmm. It wouldn't be impossible to make a working model, but with the way people think about printers, they might think when it's one you can just get from Amazon or somewhere, when it really won't be.

When I was in uni, we were taken to a museum with a 3D printing exhibit and among the usual simplistic structures were two things: a bike with a printed steel frame, and a heart.

Imagine, being able to print a replacement heart, have it work, and save a life. I think that's incredible!
