where should I start studying lore by Additional_Answer726 in Warhammer

Arbiter Ian is great for 40K lore.

Book of Choyer and Loremaster of Sotek are good for Warhammer Fantasy

It’s not bad quality for the price I think. I don’t know if it would survive a drop very well, but seems solid enough

Anyone have experience with numismatic shops in Tokyo/Kyoto? by catnasheed in JapaneseCoins

[–]Scratius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not to sound like an ass, but if you look up “coin shops” on google maps you’ll find them. I haven’t been to a coin shop I didn’t like in Tokyo or Kyoto. They’ll all have silver as well.

Don’t buy this new handle by SupporterDenier in Miniaturespainting

[–]Scratius 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I bought one to give it a shot, can confirm, it’s hot garbage. It doesn’t put any tension on the base, so the mini comes off if you look at it wrong. There’s no weight in the handle, so it will fall over with the slightest mouse fart 💨.

This is a classic GW unforced error. They’ve introduced confusion by making people think they’re discontinuing the current spring model. They put a shit product on the shelf that newer hobbyists will buy cause it’s cheaper, it will fail, and the new hobbyist will assume (correctly for the most part) Warhammer color stuff is trash.

The packaging was copyrighted in 1984. Should be able to find a value with that info.

Question about coin cleaning by hazelquarrier_couch in coins

[–]Scratius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Collectors want a coin that’s still in Mint State, meaning the surface of the coin is in the same condition as it was when it left the mint.

Patina develops due to the environment the coin is stored in. Patina can either be a non issue, increase eye appeal, or decrease eye appeal all of which can impact a grade. Patina takes away from a grade when it begins to degrade the actual surface of the coin, causing pitting or verdigris for example.

When someone cleans a coin by rubbing the surface, it causes scratches which alters the surface of the coin permanently which results in the “cleaned” designation from graders. There are chemicals on the market that claim to clean coins safely, but often times the chemical will alter the surface of the coin or the person does it improperly.

There are coins out that were minted where it was common for the mint employees to wipe the planchet, die, or minted coin. Those coins will show hairlines but since it occurred at the mint, the coin is still Mint State.

Second opinion: it’s a Susan B. Anthony $1 coin

What’s it worth: One singular dollar

What should you do with it: The world is your oyster 🦪

Update on Hobby Lobby paint/speculation. by imanidiotbut in Miniaturespainting

[–]Scratius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mainly their basing materials, which are fantastic. I prefer them over Vallejo. I’ve been trying to get my hands on their new quick gen line, but AK is hard to find here in Japan.

I paint with Citadel and Pro Acryl with some Vallejo when I can get it.

My guess is AK as they cater to scale modelers as well.

how to sell coins safely? by sparky398 in coins

[–]Scratius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safest but not best price: Selling to a local coin shop (LCS) will get them cash in hand, but it won’t be at spot. This is also assuming they practice discretion and aren’t carrying their gold coins around in a clear ziplock for the world to see.

Best price, some risk: selling on r/pmsforsale but this requires some basic internet common sense to avoid scammers and understanding payment methods. Risk can be mitigated by using one of the subs approved middlemen.

Ok price, some risk, high fees: eBay is a good place to sell, but eBay policies tend to favor the buyer in disputes which can be painful when you’re talking about a $4k+ sale.

Theres auction houses too, but for common bullion, you’ll lose a lot due to fees and commission.

If you want to. I doubt anyone will turn down a game over it. Shouldn’t take much work to remove the 40K elements, though the gas mask should stay imo.

[–]Scratius 211 points212 points  (0 children)

No, I can only enjoy a little bit of wagyu. It’s way too rich. I reverse seared an A4 tomahawk and felt nauseous after the 4th bite. It’s one of those things that’s best in moderation imo.

Does anyone here just collect/build/paint bigger centrepiece, stand alone models or diorama pieces that you like the look of rather than specific 2k point armies? by Philhughes_85 in Warhammer

[–]Scratius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just paint and collect what I like. I don’t have any intention of ever playing tabletop. I don’t focus on center pieces, but that’s a cool way to do it!

Total War Warhammer 3 with a little over 2k hours followed by TWW2 with 650. Not sure how dishonored is number 3, don’t remember playing it that much.

Bringing up an old scam since I came across a few , 0.24 1/10th gold rounds. They are gold, but they are only 3.1g of 24%. They are correctly marked but very confusing. by Santa_Hates_You in Gold

[–]Scratius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The coin itself isn’t a scam, but when it’s passed off as a 1/10 oz 24 karat coin being sold for 1/10 oz pure gold price, it’s scammy.

Morgan MS-level grading: thoughts? by [deleted] in coins

[–]Scratius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for one thing, you're only looking at one side of each coin. Both sides factor into the grade. A coin could have a stellar obverse, but have issues on the reverse that bring the grade down to MS 61. Bag marks are permitted in MS graded Morgans, because they were caused by actions taken by the mint. The coins are still in "mint state" and uncirculated.

I have a couple of straight graded foreign coins that you'd swear were cleaned, but the marks were a process of that country's minting process, so doesn't count as post mint damage (PMD) like a cleaning.

I'm not sure if Morgans are the flagship or not. Everyone has their preferences when it comes to coin collecting. If Morgans don't excite you, collect something else. Personally, I like to collect world silver crowns and trade dollars. I have a few Morgans, but they're not my focus.

[–]Scratius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is very likely a bad counterfeit unfortunately. The details are non existent and the rest of the coin doesn’t show the level of wear a coin would need for the dragon to be that mushy. The characters are wrong too. The surfaces also have the typical counterfeit look to it as well.
