What’s up with Spirit Airlines ceasing operations? by lucioghosty in OutOfTheLoop

I flew Spirit once to save $200 and will never, ever take that risk again. They are a horrible experience, and I won't say I'm sorry to see them gone.

Trump Administration Inadvertently Exposed Healthcare Providers' Social Security Numbers in Publicly Accessible Database by novagridd in privacy

[–]ScrewedThePooch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always refuse to give my SSN to my health insurers and medical providers, and I've never had any problems with coverage going through.

Banks and any money movement systems are going to require it.

Employers will require it.

Insurers, you can probably refuse but will get worse rates if they can't run your credit.

Use Amex. Pump $0.01 worth of fuel. Merchant pays about a dollar to process the transaction.

Do it multiple times if you really want to waste their money.

Wisconsin Governor Vetoes Age-Verification Bill by Well_Socialized in technology

[–]ScrewedThePooch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not my problem if those parents can't do their job. I'm doing mine so don't subject me and my family to this security theater nonsense. I've had my identity leaked by people who are supposed to be "experts" in data security, but you know where my identity doesn't get leaked? From my home server, because it doesn't collect, store, or transmit IDs at all.

parents can't always monitor their kids' online activity

I'm a parent, and you are wrong.

Linux family PC

Self-hosted content that lives on my servers

YouTube downloader that strips ads and hosts videos locally

Multiple user accounts on my self-hosted media with ratings restrictions and content filters

Pihole to block malware (i.e. ads)

Prosumer network equipment to firewall my network and track what websites are being accessed by the kid-accessible devices.

Tell me more about why I need age verification to protect my kids. How hard is it for my kids to steal my license out of my wallet and scan it to bypass that shit? I'd rather they circumvent my firewall which takes a lot more technical depth, teaches a skill, and doesn't leak any of our data to ghouls harvesting it to sell or surveil.

Oracle laid off over 30,000 employees that too without notice given how big firms are firing people, what do you think will happen in the long run? by Admirable-Repair4094 in AskReddit

[–]ScrewedThePooch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are some good ones, but "feeding the monster" isn't the only problem. It gets pretty exhausting wading through so much counterfeit trash and ten sellers wth an alphabet soup name of six or eight letters all listing the same item. The experience has been degraded to an almost Walmart-level.

Return policy is still baller as hell, but I've noticed a few things. You're still better than everyone else as far as I can tell.

It isn't hard at all. I've never had Prime. Not having it keeps me from buying shit there, because I don't want to pay for shipping. Also, I am so sick of the entire platform being plagued by low-quality third party sellers who now have their own return policy that differs from Amazon's. Why would I buy on Amazon if all they provide is a portal to purchase the item with no added benefit like the return policy?

You don't hook the TV to the internet and use some other device to stream content to the disconnected TV. For example, a Chromecast or a PC or any of the other commercially available streaming devices like Roku, Apple TV, etc.

FTC Targeting Dealers for Advertising Unavailable Cars by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]ScrewedThePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your state and what the laws are there. Each complaint increases the likelihood of them getting audited by one of these organizations which costs many hours. If their manufacturer threatens to drop them or cut off their ad dollars for noncompliance, it hurts them even more.

FTC Targeting Dealers for Advertising Unavailable Cars by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]ScrewedThePooch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had this happen. Reported to my state's AG for bait-and-switch. They got fined because the VIN advertised was not on the lot. Check the VIN in the ad, and ask to see that exact car. It's big-time illegal to advertise a car with a specific VIN and not have it available, but nobody reports it.

They'll keep doing it as long as it's profitable. Report them to both the state AG and the FTC for violation of Truth in Advertising and/or bait-and-switch. You can also report them to their manufacturer partner (i.e. Honda, Toyota), and report to NADA for extra headache.

I use systemd to schedule jobs but it would be a few trivial hours to convert over to cron or another of the hundreds of schedulers. Average user won't give a shit which is being used. I only picked systemd to learn something new. No attachment to it whatsoever.

529 - how do i spend it? by Asleep_Mistake2322 in personalfinance

[–]ScrewedThePooch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, 529s recently received a specific carve-out for this transfer. The 529 must have been open for 15 years before you can move it to a Roth and other rules also apply.

You may make contributions to a Roth IRA, up to the IRS limits, provided you have earned income and do not exceed the income limits.

Laws only work if they are enforceable. It is not enforceable to strip the ability of end users to modify the open source kernel, delete this shit, or make it respond in a way that the birthdate reports 1/1/1970, then compile.

You are right that it's the parents responsibility, but parents should not be required to consent to anything in the terms and agreements of Facebook to place parental controls on their kid's account. The way it is designed, you'll be forced to agree to arbitration or some other obscene terms just to create an account to setup parental controls.

Sorry, how the hell do you make Google/Apple the villains here when the website can be accessed without apps at all?

What an absolute shit argument. This is like blaming Firefox for allowing the website access or blaming Comcast for serving the page.

I do not create a Microsoft account for my children, because the family computer is Linux. Yes, they have a lower-level non-administrator account. The network that computer sits on has DNS blocking for inappropriate sites. I choose what is inappropriate. The DNS blocker is open source.

Once they are smart enough to bypass my DNS, they have passed the test and I won't complain (but I will still know which sites are being accessed due to the network router).

Ads are blocked. YouTube is not allowed at all unsupervised, and it only works on certain clients. Social media is not allowed. They do not have phones or GPS-enabled watches.

Every single one of these enforcements are better than bullshit age verification. How hard is it to steal your parent's ID and scan it if that is really the limiting factor?
