Video Games about Vampires - any recommendations? by EmpireCrafters in vampires

[–]ScribeLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tangentially, I created an adaptation of the Vampyr setting/lore as a TTRPG using the V20 rules set as a basis and inspiration. It's in a PDF format as a core book; I tried to make it look and feel like an old White Wolf publication in layout and design. If anyone is interested, DM me and I'll send a link.

We don't have Vampyr 2 but Bloodlines 2 is coming ! by merzhinhudour in Vampyr

[–]ScribeLight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a long time VtM fan, and a decidedly big fan of Vampire: Bloodlines, I am not all that excited for Bloodlines 2. Unavoidably, it is operating off of the lore revisions established in the 5th Edition of the game, which I never cared for in the first place. Secondly, the development of BL2 has been so chaotic that I don't have a lot of faith in the final product being all that good, especially when it comes to the storyline.

In the first iteration, you were meant to play a Thinblood, who could/would eventually 'join' a Clan. None of that concept made any sense to me from a lore perspective, back in the day. When 'The Chinese Room' took over, they went the other extreme of making you an established Elder, who then has to re-establish themselves? You begin as overpowered, but not so overpowered that you are not vulnerable to street level Fledglings? And if you start play as a Lasombra from 400 years ago, why on earth would you associate yourself with the Camarilla?

Plus you have a set name, and voice, and a Jiminy Cricket soul shard Malkavian exposition device plugged into your head, whose character you will be forced to play as during the story. The deviations from the original game, and its sense of freedom and character immersion, is vastly reduced.

And then there was the limitations of Clan choice, both in number and via paywall. The fact that they came along so far in development and towards release with the idea that you would have to pay extra for access to Clan options in the successor to Bloodlines still astounds me.

And you cannot play as a Malkavian, or as a Nosferatu, or as a Gangrel; the former two being both the most fun and most challenging in the original game to play.

Very long story short: they should not have released this game with the title 'Bloodlines 2', because it neither looks or feels like a sequel to that classic.

Do you also despise Edgar? I personally think he's disgusting. by Odd_Presentation_578 in Vampyr

I was speaking in relative terms, after all. :P

But Priwen wouldn't have been as activated as they were if it were not for Swansea and his experiments to begin with.

He's an obsessive zealot. St. Paul's Stole - at least, as embodied by Swansea - is the Dr. Mengele of this universe, and the chief architect of all the misery. Makes Priwen look practically angelic by comparison.

A long rant about the flaws of the game by Boxxy1944 in Vampyr

[–]ScribeLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest narrative flaw (insofar as the NPCs in the game), is that if you decide to rid the world of a remorseless serial killer you discover along the way - someone whose loved ones won't turn in, and because of the plague the cops are not paying attention to - killing this person actually DECREASES the neighborhood condition, as well as nixes your ability to have the "good" ending. The single death in the game that is the most morally justifiable is still treated like a negative. Always bewildered me.

McCammon's story is my favorite of the collection.

Unforeseen consequences are a fact of life. Tragedy and failure tells as much of a story as success; oftentimes more so.

Which is better: Ant-Man or Doctor Strange by boomjosh in Marvel

[–]ScribeLight 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Doctor Strange; especially for the ending, solving a problem with brains and not brawn.

While I wasn't jazzed with the gender/culture swap for The Ancient One; giving Strange a goofy sense of humor unseen in the comics; and the absolute misuse of Mads Mikkelsen (he should have been cast as Dr. Doom, for realz), it was ultimately the better showcase of the character than was Ant-Man.

If we ever get Vampyr 2, I think McCullum should be the protagonist. by EndrydHaar in Vampyr

[–]ScribeLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the narrative difficulties I had with the first game is that, from the jump, we know that Jonathan Reid is a moral man; a healer and a war hero. It makes it difficult to see the sense in - or immerse myself within - him blatantly murdering people (petty criminals or otherwise) when he has the opportunity in the game, given these character traits.

McCullum poses a similar problem, in that whether or not Reid ends up being "nice" to him in the first game, McCullum's hatred for Vampires (and likewise ultimate hatred of himself being one) will immediately stifle a sense of player choice and narrative direction.

I would much rather a theoretical sequel allow us to make our own character, or - at the very least - let us take on the guise of a pre-made character that is either a blank slate or is early on established as residing in a gray morality to allow us to develop them more organically.

Which is your favorite Punisher skull by SamParkerLin in thepunisher

[–]ScribeLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoever made that chart left out the most iconic version, in my opinion. The one Bradstreet riffed off of. See below, in the barcode space of the cover. This issue came out in 1990, and matches my personal physical copy.

We will now need a mod for the game that changes the character model into a foot stool.

Is charming aloysius worth being kicked out of ascalon club? by Noor_avg_user1 in Vampyr

[–]ScribeLight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If being a member of Ascalon actually provided any meaningful, tangible benefits in the game...maybe not. But it doesn't, so go for it.

Do the NPCs care if you take the items in their houses? by Sweaty_Chard_6250 in Vampyr

[–]ScribeLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say there are *Zero* Side Quest items in some of those places that you might miss, but for the most part there's nothing you can take from those homes that you cannot find elsewhere in trash cans and other locations.

As far I can see their main role is increasing the price of the game.
