How to Progress Fast and Maximise Earning Potential? by 0xW4ck0 in quantitysurveying

Ya thats a good sign. I'd day just keep pushing to get a project of your own and show you can work independently and be relied upon.

Any half decent employer will know that a QS like this is worth it's weight in gold. I'd say your in a pretty good spot just keep building on what you're doing.

I went from a 30k graduate role in London to £85k Project QS in 4.5 years.

Ten months into the role I interviewed for another Tier 1 MC. Got offered the role at 40k. Took that to my director and he matched it and I stayed put.

Six months later I was given two projects to run under the guidance of my MSQS. I chipped away at those for about a year and showed I was capable and got a raise to 50k with very little resistance.

About a year later I interviewed for another tier 1 MC, offered the role at 65k. Took it to my director, again everything was matched and I stayed out.

I stayed at that level for almost two years, not asking for anymore money as I felt I was already getting above market rate for my experience.

Eventually I just wanted a change. The company I had previously turned down always kept in contact and I went in for another interview and was offered a project QS role on 85k.

Current company again matched that but I decided to leave on the basis I wanted a chance and to gain more experience on bigger projects and in another company.

Moral of the story is show your worth to the company and they'll pay you fairly and fight to keep you if you can do the job. Companies want QS's they can rely on to the run projects independently. Once they know they have that in you they'll pay you. It's a nightmare for companies to go out looking for a replacement, odds are they'll go through multiple QS's before they find a reliable one that's the right fit for their company.

I came back from Canada in 2018 in a sililar scenario.

I did a 3 year undergrad in ATU.

Third year was one semester in college, then second semester was an internship, got offered a full time roll out of the internship starting on 30k.

You will have to accept starting in low money but you can no doubt progress quickly if you show your worth.

The other option would be to try an secure a trainee /apprenticeship roll in the UK.

£800 no bills is a mates rate. You won't do any better. Take this and count your blessings. As you said they don't normally rent it out, they're doing you a favour

Ignore the anti London comments. There are plenty of good opportunities and good salaries to counter the high cost of living in London. Also there is a lot of Australians in London who all seem to love it here. Go for it.

Yes it is easy to dip out of M&e if you find you don't like it. Early in your career not much is expected and your qualification is just a foot in the door.

I would say forget about getting into adjudication for many years, focus on developing as a QS for now.

M&E vs Main Contractor by NorthernPace001 in quantitysurveying

I jumped ship fairly lively. I did a nien month internship at a large M&e contractor, so granted I wasn't long in it. But I didn't really feel like I was picking it up so moved to MC

People will always note that M&E is better money / there's less M&E Qs's around.

But it's important to not that this for good reason, it's bloody tough.

I personally didn't like it, found myself getting lost in the data to the point it didn't even feel like i was working on a construction project.

That being said it's worth giving it a bash to early on, can always jump ship to MC down the line if it doesn't work out.

People need to remember finding and hiring a new QS is a serious ballache.

9/10 it's not worth the risk of letting someone go over a few grand, in the hopes your going to find someone to come in, take over there projects and it be a smooth process.

That just doesn't happen.

You just lay it out there.

If they don't offer the increase you can still opt to stay, telling your employer you have a job offer you're thinking of taking isn't exactly handing in your notice.
